Jie "Jack" Zhao (born 14 June 1969) is a Chinese professional contract bridge player. He became a World Bridge Federation Grand Master (WGM) in 2014. [lower-alpha 1]

Bridge career

Zhao and Zhong Fu won the quadrennial World Open Pairs Championship, 2006 in Verona, Italy. On a team of five players that same year, they won the annual Vanderbilt, the oldest major tournament in North America. [1] Zhao has more than 10 Chinese National Championships, and has represented China from 2003 to 2009 in various World Championship events including quarterfinal or better finishes in the Bermuda Bowl, the Mind Sport Olympics, the transnational teams, and the Rosenblum.

Zhao played on China open teams that qualified for the biennial Bermuda Bowl as Pacific Asia (zone 6) champions in 2005, 2007, and 2009. (The latter finished fourth, China's only appearance in the Bermuda Bowl semifinals.) He played for China in the 2003 Bermuda Bowl as well, as a high runner-up in zone 6. [2]

Zhao and Kerri Sanborn of the U.S. won the quadrennial World Mixed Pairs Championship in 2014. As a player primarily affiliated with China and zone 6, he was the first from outside Europe and North America, World Bridge Federation zones 1 and 2, to win any gold, silver, or bronze medal in 13 renditions from 1966. At the same time Sanborn, who won as Kerri Shuman in 1978, became the first player to win the gold medal twice.

Personal

Zhao is a full-time professional bridge player and lives in Tianjin, China, as well as Florida, United States. He travels frequently between the two countries. His family is currently in Florida.

The Transnational Teams permit late entry by players from national teams knocked out before the Bermuda Bowl semifinals. China finished 12th, 10th, 5th, and 4th in the last four Bermuda Bowl tournaments, 2003 to 2009; thus it was possible for Zhao (or the China team intact) to enter the Transnational Teams as well, except in 2009, and to finish 2nd, 4th, and 10th. Mir Zia Mahmood is a Pakistani-American professional bridge player. He is a World Bridge Federation and American Contract Bridge League Grand Life Master. As of April 2011 he was the 10th-ranked World Grand Master.

Geir Helgemo

Geir Helgemo is a professional bridge player who was born in Norway but is now a citizen of Monaco. Through 2012 he had won three world championships in teams-of-four competition. As of August 2018 he ranked first among Open World Grand Masters and his regular partner Tor Helness ranked second.

Piotr Gawryś Polish bridge player

Piotr Gawryś is a Polish bridge player. Gawrys, WBF Grand Master, has won 4 world championships; World Team Olympics in 1984, Transnational Mixed Teams 2000, Transnational Open Teams 2005 and Bermuda Bowl 2015. His other first places include; World Masters Individual in 1992, European Teams Championships 1993 and European Open Pairs 1995. He was second in Bermuda Bowl 1991, Rosenblum Cup 1994, World Masters Individual 2000.

Adam Artur Żmudziński is a Polish bridge player. After 2014 competition, he ranked 22nd among Grand Masters by World Bridge Federation (WBF) masterpoints, five places behind his longtime partner Cezary Balicki. They ranked 26–27th among more than 100 all-time Grand Masters by placing points that do not decay over time.

The World Team Olympiad was a contract bridge meet organized by the World Bridge Federation every four years from 1960 to 2004. Its main events were world championships for national teams, always including one open and one restricted to women. A parallel event for seniors was inaugurated in 2000.

Cezary Balicki Polish bridge player

Cezary Jacek Balicki is a Polish bridge and chess player. After 2014 competition, he ranked 17th among Grand Masters by World Bridge Federation (WBF) masterpoints, five places ahead of his longtime partner Adam Żmudziński. They ranked 26–27th among more than 100 all-time Grand Masters by placing points that do not decay over time. Balicki also holds the chess title of FIDE Master (FM).

Tor Helness is a Norwegian professional bridge player. He was a stalwart on Norway junior and open teams for thirty years before moving to Monaco. Through 2012 he has won four world championships in teams-of-four competition. As of October 2016 he ranks second among Open World Grand Masters and his regular partner Geir Helgemo ranks first.

Kerri Sanborn American bridge player

Sharon Lou "Kerri" Sanborn is an American bridge player from New York City. She has won major tournaments as Kerri Davis and Kerri Shuman as well. Sometime prior to the 2014 European and World meets, Sanborn ranked 25th among 73 living Women World Grand Masters by world masterpoints (MP) and 7th by placing points that do not decay over time.

Marion Michielsen Dutch-Swedish professional bridge player (born 1985)

Marion Susanne Michielsen is a Dutch-Swedish professional bridge player. At the annual World Bridge Federation (WBF) meet in October 2014, she played on teams that won two world championships. Thus she became a World Women Grand Master.
