The appearance of the Puerto Rican delegation at the Beijing Olympics marked the commonwealth's sixteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics, and its twenty-second appearance at any Olympic Games, since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. Of its competitors participating in events that involve progression by heats, six athletes advanced at least one round in their events, and two advanced at least two rounds, with Asunción Ocasio almost medaling bronze in taekwondo. However, there were no Puerto Rican medalists at the Beijing Olympics. McWilliams Arroyo, a boxer, bore Puerto Rico's flag at the ceremonies.

Served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps in Korea. He was buried at the Puerto Rico National Cemetery in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.
Iván Rodríguez Padilla was a Puerto Rican sprinter who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics and in the 1960 Summer Olympics. He was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico. He finished third in the 1959 Pan American Games 4×400 metres Relay. In the 1959 Pan American Games 400 metres Rodríguez finished fifth.
Neftalí Rivera Oliveras was a Puerto Rican basketball player who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics and in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He holds the record for most points in a game in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional when he scored 79 points on May 22, 1974. In that game he achieved the record by making 34 field goals and 11 free throws. He died on December 23, 2017, at Auxilio Mutuo Hospital in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, due to respiratory problems.

Luis Ramon Rivera Rivera is a Puerto Rican gymnast. Rivera had won a total of three medals at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including two golds for the team all-around and pommel horse. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he finished fourteenth in the men's individual all-around final, with a total technical score of 90.175. He is also affiliated with Federacion Puertorriqueña de Gimnasia, and is coached and trained by Jose and Juan R. Colon.
