The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit. The Red Wings compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference. The franchise is one of the Original Six of the league. Founded in 1926,the team was known as the Detroit Cougars until 1930. For the next two seasons,the team was named the Detroit Falcons,before changing their name to the Red Wings in 1932.
Gordon Howe was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. From 1946 to 1980,he played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA);his first 25 seasons were spent with the Detroit Red Wings. Nicknamed "Mr. Hockey",Howe is often considered the most complete player ever to play the game and one of the greatest of all time. At his retirement,his 801 goals,1,049 assists,and 1,850 total points were all NHL records that stood until they were broken by Wayne Gretzky,who himself has been a major champion of Howe's legacy. A 23-time NHL All-Star,he shares the NHL record for seasons played with Chris Chelios,and his all-time NHL games played record of 1,767 was only surpassed in 2021 by Patrick Marleau. In 2017,Howe was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players".
Stephen Gregory Yzerman is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player currently serving as executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings,with whom he spent all 22 seasons of his NHL playing career. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time,he is a Detroit sports icon and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. After his retirement as a player,he served in the front office of the Red Wings,and then as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning,while also being executive director for Team Canada in two Olympics.
In ice hockey,the captain is the player designated by a team as the only person authorized to speak with the game officials regarding rule interpretations when the captain is on the ice. At most levels of play each team must designate one captain and a number of alternate captains who speak to the officials when the captain is on the bench. Captains wear a "C" on their sweaters,while alternate captains wear an "A".
Robert Michael Gainey is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played for the Montreal Canadiens from 1973 until 1989. After retiring from active play,he became a hockey coach and later an executive with the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars organization before returning to Montreal as general manager from 2003 to 2010. Currently,Gainey serves as a team consultant for the St. Louis Blues as well as a volunteer senior advisor for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2017 Gainey was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
William Scott Bowman is a Canadian former professional ice hockey head coach. He holds the record for most wins in National Hockey League (NHL) history,with 1,244 wins in the regular season and 223 in the Stanley Cup playoffs,and his 14 Stanley Cup wins ranks second most of all time for any player,coach or executive. He coached the St. Louis Blues,Montreal Canadiens,Buffalo Sabres,Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. He was most recently the senior advisor of hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks,until stepping down in July 2022. Bowman is often regarded as the greatest coach in NHL history.
Gerard Gallant is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former player. He was most recently the head coach of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has previously served as the head coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets (2004–2006),Florida Panthers (2014–2016) and Vegas Golden Knights (2017–2020). He is a three-time finalist for the Jack Adams Award for NHL coach of the year,winning the award in 2018 for the Golden Knights' first season. He was also a two-time Canadian Hockey League (CHL) coach of the year during his tenure with the Saint John Sea Dogs,where the team secured two President's Cup victories and one Memorial Cup.
The Indianapolis Racers were a major league ice hockey team that played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They were the first professional team to secure Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
The 1992–93 NHL season was the 76th regular season of the National Hockey League. Each player wore a patch on their jersey throughout the season to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The league expanded to 24 teams with the addition of the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Under the new labour agreement signed following the 1992 NHL strike,each team began playing 84 games per season,including two games at neutral sites.
The Quebec Nordiques were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City. The Nordiques played in the World Hockey Association (1972–1979) and the National Hockey League (1979–1995). The franchise was relocated to Denver in May 1995 and renamed the Colorado Avalanche. They played their home games at the Colisée de Québec from 1972 to 1995.
The 1993 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1992–93 season,and the culmination of the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested between the Los Angeles Kings and the Montreal Canadiens. It was the first appearance in the Final for the Kings and the first appearance since the 1920 Stanley Cup Finals for a team based on the west coast of the United States. It was also the 34th appearance for Montreal,their first since the 1989 Stanley Cup Finals. The Canadiens defeated the Kings in five games to win the team's 24th Stanley Cup. The year 1993 was the 100th anniversary of the first awarding of the Stanley Cup in 1893,and the first Finals to start in the month of June. To date,the 1993 Canadiens are the last Stanley Cup championship team to be composed solely of North American-born players,and the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup.

The NHL's first quarter-century saw the league compete against two rival major leagues—the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Western Canada Hockey League—for players and the Stanley Cup. The NHL first expanded into the United States in 1924 with the founding of the Boston Bruins,and by 1926 consisted of ten teams in Ontario,Quebec,the Great Lakes region,and the Northeastern United States. At the same time,the NHL emerged as the only major league and the sole competitor for the Stanley Cup;in 1947,the NHL completed a deal with the Stanley Cup trustees to gain full control of the Cup. The NHL's footprint spread across Canada as Foster Hewitt's radio broadcasts were heard coast-to-coast starting in 1933.
Mark Steven Howe is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman and left winger who played sixteen seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) following six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA).
The 1988–89 Detroit Red Wings season saw the Red Wings finish in first place in the Norris Division with a record of 34 wins,34 losses,and 12 ties for 80 points. They were the only team even to have at least a .500 record,but they lost the Division Semi-finals four games to two to the Chicago Blackhawks.
The history of the Detroit Red Wings begins in 1926,when the franchise began play in the National Hockey League (NHL). The professional ice hockey club was founded as the Detroit Cougars on September 25,1926,one of three teams to join the NHL in 1926. With the demise of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL),the rights to the players of the Victoria Cougars were purchased by a Detroit group led by Charles A. Hughes who kept the name "Cougars" for their NHL club. The new team struggled financially;in 1930,the Cougars changed their name to the Detroit Falcons,and after being bought out of receivership by James E. Norris were renamed as the Detroit Red Wings in 1932. The team played their first game on November 18,1926,and won their first two Stanley Cup titles in 1936 and 1937. The Red Wings have won the Cup eleven times,more than any other American team in NHL history.
Jonathan Drouin is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). After a stellar 2012–13 season with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)'s Halifax Mooseheads,in which he was named CHL Player of the Year and won the Memorial Cup,Drouin was selected in the first round,third overall,by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2013 NHL entry draft. On June 15,2017,Drouin was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he played a total of six seasons,before signing with the Avalanche as a free agent on July 1,2023.
