Jacques Demers (born August 25,1944) is a former Canadian Senator, former broadcaster and former professional ice hockey head coach. After a lengthy coaching career in the World Hockey Association and in the National Hockey League,Demers became an analyst for Montreal Canadiens games on RDS. On August 27,2009,he was nominated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to fill the Canadian Senate seat vacated by Yoine Goldstein. Senator Demers represented the Conservative Party in the Senate [2] until December 2015 when he resigned from the Conservative caucus in order to sit as an Independent. [3] On his 75th birthday on August 25,2019,he left his position as Senator.
Two of the franchises Demers coached in the WHA were the Chicago Cougars and the Quebec Nordiques. Additionally,he was the exceedingly popular coach of the Indianapolis Racers, which won the Eastern Division championship under his guidance. Demers had the opportunity to coach Wayne Gretzky in the 1979 WHA All-Star Series. The format of the series was a three-game set that pitted the WHA All-Stars against HC Moscow Dynamo. Demers asked Gordie Howe if it was okay to put him on a line with Wayne Gretzky and his son Mark Howe. [4] In Game One,the line scored seven points as the WHA All-Stars won by a score of 4–2. [4] In Game Two,Gretzky and Mark Howe each scored a goal and Gordie Howe picked up an assist as the WHA won 4–2. [4] The line did not score in the final game, but the WHA won by a score of 4–3.
While in the NHL,he coached the Quebec Nordiques,St. Louis Blues,Detroit Red Wings, [5] [6] Montreal Canadiens, [7] and Tampa Bay Lightning.
With the Red Wings,he led them to their first Conference Finals appearance since 1966,doing so in each of his first two seasons. He won the Jack Adams Awards as NHL Coach of the Year for both 1987 and 1988,becoming the first (and so far only) person to win the award in consecutive years. [8] [9] He was also responsible for naming longtime Red Wing Steve Yzerman as team captain. [5] [10] The team became fractured after teammates broke curfew prior to a Game 5 loss in the Conference Final in 1988,and the Red Wings fired Demers two years later.
In 1993,he led Montreal to its most recent Stanley Cup. Only two years later, however, the Canadiens missed the playoffs altogether for the first time since 1970. [11] After an 0–5 start to the 1995–96 season,Demers was fired. [12] [13]
While in Tampa Bay,he was responsible for guiding Vincent Lecavalier through his first two years in the NHL. He displayed a fatherly attitude toward the young star, often pulling him aside during practice to lecture him in their native French. During the 1998–99 season,he also served as the Lightning's general manager. [14]
In 2007,he was named the 100th most influential personality in hockey by The Hockey News .
In 1,317 games coached professionally (WHA/NHL),he went 553-612-152 and went to the postseason eleven times.

On November 2,2005,Demers released a biography, written by Mario Leclerc, entitled En toutes lettres (English translation:All Spelled Out),in which he revealed that he is functionally illiterate. According to Demers,he never really learned to read or write because of his abusive childhood in Montreal. He covered for himself by asking secretaries and public relations people to read letters for him, claiming he could not read English well enough to understand them (though he speaks English and French equally well). When he served as general manager of the Lightning,he brought in Cliff Fletcher and Jay Feaster as his assistants;as it turned out, they did most of the work a general manager would normally do because Demers knew he could not do it himself. [15]
On August 28,2009,CBC Radio One reported that Demers was chosen to fill the Senate seat of Yoine Goldstein by Prime Minister Harper. According to the CBC report,he has "raised awareness about literacy issues" by "going public with his own struggles." A series of Montreal residents were interviewed regarding his Senate appointment and they were generally positive about the move. Many noted, however, that it was "important that he learn to read." [16]
Demers served in the Senate until reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75 on August 25,2019.
On July 5,2010,Demers was reported to be in stable condition after undergoing two emergency surgeries. [17]
Demers was hospitalized after experiencing a stroke in April 2016. He remained in stable condition in a Montreal hospital. [18]
In October 2016,Demers was hospitalized for a serious infection. [19]

From 1946 to 1980,he played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and six seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA);his first 25 seasons were spent with the Detroit Red Wings. Nicknamed "Mr. Hockey",Howe is often considered the most complete player ever to play the game and one of the greatest of all time. At his retirement, his 801 goals,1,049 assists, and 1,850 total points were all NHL records that stood until they were broken by Wayne Gretzky, who himself has been a major champion of Howe's legacy. A 23-time NHL All-Star,he shares the NHL record for seasons played with Chris Chelios, and his all-time NHL games played record of 1,767 was only surpassed in 2021 by Patrick Marleau. In 2017,Howe was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players".

In ice hockey, the captain is the player designated by a team as the only person authorized to speak with the game officials regarding rule interpretations when the captain is on the ice. At most levels of play each team must designate one captain and a number of alternate captains who speak to the officials when the captain is on the bench. Captains wear a "C" on their sweaters, while alternate captains wear an "A".

The 1992–93 NHL season was the 76th regular season of the National Hockey League. Each player wore a patch on their jersey throughout the season to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The league expanded to 24 teams with the addition of the Ottawa Senators and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Under the new labour agreement signed following the 1992 NHL strike, each team began playing 84 games per season, including two games at neutral sites.
The Quebec Nordiques were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City. The Nordiques played in the World Hockey Association (1972–1979) and the National Hockey League (1979–1995). The franchise was relocated to Denver in May 1995 and renamed the Colorado Avalanche. They played their home games at the Colisée de Québec from 1972 to 1995.
The 1993 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1992–93 season, and the culmination of the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested between the Los Angeles Kings and the Montreal Canadiens. It was the first appearance in the Final for the Kings and the first appearance since the 1920 Stanley Cup Finals for a team based on the west coast of the United States. It was also the 34th appearance for Montreal, their first since the 1989 Stanley Cup Finals. The Canadiens defeated the Kings in five games to win the team's 24th Stanley Cup. The year 1993 was the 100th anniversary of the first awarding of the Stanley Cup in 1893,and the first Finals to start in the month of June. The 1979–80 NHL season was the 63rd season of the National Hockey League. This season saw the addition of four teams from the disbanded World Hockey Association as expansion franchises. The Edmonton Oilers,Winnipeg Jets,New England Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques joined the NHL,bringing the total to 21 teams. The other two WHA teams were paid to fold.
The history of the National Hockey League begins with the end of its predecessor league, the National Hockey Association (NHA),in 1917. After unsuccessfully attempting to resolve disputes with Eddie Livingstone, owner of the Toronto Blueshirts, executives of the three other NHA franchises suspended the NHA,and formed the National Hockey League (NHL),replacing the Livingstone team with a temporary team in Toronto, the Arenas. The NHL's first quarter-century saw the league compete against two rival major leagues—the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and Western Canada Hockey League—for players and the Stanley Cup. The NHL first expanded into the United States in 1924 with the founding of the Boston Bruins, and by 1926 consisted of ten teams in Ontario,Quebec, the Great Lakes region, and the Northeastern United States. At the same time, the NHL emerged as the only major league and the sole competitor for the Stanley Cup;in 1947,the NHL completed a deal with the Stanley Cup trustees to gain full control of the Cup. The NHL's footprint spread across Canada as Foster Hewitt's radio broadcasts were heard coast-to-coast starting in 1933.

They were the only team even to have at least a .500 record, but they lost the Division Semi-finals four games to two to the Chicago Blackhawks.
The history of the Detroit Red Wings begins in 1926,when the franchise began play in the National Hockey League (NHL). The professional ice hockey club was founded as the Detroit Cougars on September 25,1926,one of three teams to join the NHL in 1926. With the demise of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL),the rights to the players of the Victoria Cougars were purchased by a Detroit group led by Charles A. Hughes who kept the name "Cougars" for their NHL club. The new team struggled financially;in 1930,the Cougars changed their name to the Detroit Falcons, and after being bought out of receivership by James E. Norris were renamed as the Detroit Red Wings in 1932. The team played their first game on November 18,1926,and won their first two Stanley Cup titles in 1936 and 1937. The Red Wings have won the Cup eleven times, more than any other American team in NHL history.
