Jai Al-Attas (born 1983) is the co-founder and co-owner of Australian independent label Below Par Records and the writer and director of the 2009 documentary film One Nine Nine Four .

Below Par Records

Al-Attas co-founded Below Par Records (sometimes typeset BelowPARrecords) alongside Mark Catanzariti and Steven Chalker, in 2000. All three were only 16 and still in high school. [1] The label concentrated on signing Australian indie bands, catering for rock artists and more specifically punk and its subgenres. [2]

In 2002, the label won the Nescafé Big Break award, which was a Nescafé initiative, where the company gives away cash grants to people aged between 16 and 24, who have a dream or idea and need some financial support to make it a reality. The label was granted A$20,000. [2] Below Par became a part of Australian Independent Records Labels Association (AIR)—similar to the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), except independent-based—and then went on to sign Australian bands Something with Numbers and the now defunct For Amusement Only and Last Year’s Hero. They established a relationship with national independent distributor Inertia Music, which stocked their releases in both independent and chain retailers. [2]

In January 2003, Below Par travelled to Los Angeles and New York City to meet of labels, artists, managers and agencies. They signed, toured and released an EP (Wake the Silent Day) for the band In the Grey, and then signed Brand New. In October 2003, they signed unknown Melbourne band Kisschasy and soon after announced a deal with Eleven: A Music Company. [2]

Below Par has since worked with Jim Ward of Sparta, American rap rock artist MC Lars and pop punk band Yellowcard.

Filmmaking

In 2006, Jai made his first film, a tour documentary for the Melbourne band Kisschasy, it was titled Kisschasy: The Movie . The film was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Music DVD [3] and made Rolling Stone's Top Music DVDs for 2006 list. In 2007, Al-Attas started a film production company called Robot Academy Films with producer Matt Wardle.

The company's first project is a feature-length documentary on the explosion of punk rock in the 90s, titled One Nine Nine Four , which he is writing and directing. [4] The documentary is narrated by skateboarder Tony Hawk and features interviews and footage of various bands and figures in the punk scene including Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Dexter Holland from The Offspring, Tim Armstrong from Rancid and Fat Mike from NOFX. Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 also appear in the film. [5]

Mushroom Records Australian record label

Mushroom Records was an Australian flagship record label, founded in 1972 in Melbourne. It published and distributed many successful Australian artists and expanded internationally, until it was merged with Festival Records in 1998. Festival Mushroom Records was later acquired by Warner Bros. Records, which operated the label from 2005 to 2010 until it folded to Warner Bros. Records. Founder Michael Gudinski went on to become the leader of the Mushroom Group, the largest independent music and entertainment company in Australia, with divisions such as Frontier Touring.

The Donnas American rock band

The Donnas were an American rock band formed in Palo Alto, California, in 1993. The band consisted of Brett Anderson, Allison Robertson, Maya Ford and Torry Castellano. Amy Cesari replaced Castellano, who left the band in 2009 due to tendonitis. They drew inspiration from the Ramones, The Runaways, Girlschool, AC/DC, Bachman–Turner Overdrive and Kiss. Rolling Stone has stated that "the Donnas offer a guileless take on adolescent alienation; they traffic in kicks, not catharsis, fun rather than rage". MTV has stated that the band offers "a good old-fashioned rock & roll party". After gathering a cult following in the punk scene since their 1997 debut, the band achieved major label commercial success in the early 2000s and afterward as their music mixed punk, metal and classic rock sounds.

Jebediah Australian alternative rock band

Jebediah are an Australian alternative rock band formed in 1994 in Perth, Western Australia. They were formed by Chris Daymond on lead guitar, Kevin Mitchell on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Vanessa Thornton on bass guitar. They were joined a year later by Kevin's older brother, Brett Mitchell, on drums. After winning the National Campus Band Competition, the group were brought to national attention when their 1996 single "Jerks of Attention" received heavy airplay on Australian alternative radio station Triple J – which was followed by their breakthrough debut album, Slightly Odway.

Their line-up consists of lead vocalist Darren Cordeux, bassist Joel Vanderuit, guitarist Sean Thomas and drummer Karl Ammitzboll. The band released two gold certified studio albums, two extended plays, a documentary DVD and a compilation album in their initial 10-year career, selling in excess of 90,000 records.

Cosmic Psychos Australian punk rock band

Cosmic Psychos are an Australian punk rock band which formed in 1982 as Spring Plains. Founding members included Ross Knight on bass guitar and vocals; Robbie Addington on guitar and vocals; and Steve Morrow on vocals. Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, described their music as "arty kind of punk noise, somewhere between The Birthday Party and a more narcotic sounding Ramones". Late in 1984 the group was renamed as Cosmic Psychos. They issued their debut album, Down on the Farm, in December 1985. Several albums have followed and were backed by national tours and international tours to Europe and North America including festivals with Mudhoney, Nirvana, L7, Helmet and Motörhead. In 1990 Jones was replaced by Robbie Watts on guitar and vocals. By 2005 Walsh was replaced by Dean Muller on drums. On 1 July 2006 Watts died of a heart attack, aged 47, and the band continued with John McKeering joining.

The company was founded on 11 November 2000 by artist manager, John Watson.

Something with Numbers is a rock band based in Australia. The band was formed on the New South Wales Central Coast, in Australia, in 2001. They have released an EP and four studio albums in their 7-year career. Something with Numbers found success in 2006, with the release of "Apple of the Eye ", which peaked at No. 34 on the ARIA Singles Chart, and placed No. 64 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2006.

"Face Without a Name" is a song by Australian rock group Kisschasy, released as the second single from their debut album, United Paper People (2005). It was released on 24 October 2005 and peaked at number 41 in Australia.

One Nine Nine Four is a documentary film written and directed by Jai Al-Attas, "exploring the birth, growth and eventual tipping point of punk rock during the 90s" and produced by the independent Australian company Robot Academy Films. The bulk of the film's content consists of band interviews and archive footage. The film was screened once at the Calgary International Film Festival on September, 29th.

Stealing ONeal Musical artist

Stealing O'Neal was an Australian pop rock band from Melbourne, formed in 2004. The band comprised vocalist Chris Scott, guitarist and backing vocalist Jack Tosi, bassist Tom Fleming, guitarist Tim O'Keefe and drummer Ryan D'Sylva. They made a name for themselves with live performances alongside well-known Australian acts Something with Numbers, The Hot Lies and The Getaway Plan, as well as international acts New Found Glory, Boys Night Out, All Time Low and The Audition as well as playing as the Melbourne local act at Soundwave 2009.

Daddy Cool is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 1970 with the original line-up of Wayne Duncan, Ross Hannaford, Ross Wilson and Gary Young. Their debut single "Eagle Rock" was released in May 1971 and stayed at number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks. Their debut July 1971 LP Daddy Who? Daddy Cool also reached number 1 and became the first Australian album to sell more than 100,000 copies. The group's name came from the 1957 song "Daddy Cool" by US rock group The Rays. Daddy Cool included their version of this song on Daddy Who? Daddy Cool.

Violent Soho Australian rock band

Violent Soho are an Australian alternative rock band that was formed in 2004 in the Brisbane suburb of Mansfield, Queensland. The band consists of Luke Boerdam, James Tidswell, Luke Henery and Michael Richards. Their sound has been compared to that of 1980s and 1990s alternative rock bands such as the Pixies, Mudhoney and Nirvana. Although being largely described as 'Grunge' the band is a self described 'Stoner Pop' band. The band's third studio album, Hungry Ghost, was certified Gold in Australia in September 2014. Their fourth album, Waco, debuted at number 1 on the Australian ARIA Charts in 2016. The band's fifth album, Everything Is A-OK, was released on 3 April 2020 and also debuted at number 1 on the ARIA charts.

Short Stack are an Australian punk rock band. The band consists of members Shaun Diviney, Andy Clemmensen and Bradie Webb (drums). Shannon Hotchkins was also a member of Short Stack before any song was performed or recorded.
