James Fong is a Fijian obstetrician-gynaecologist who serves as the Permanent Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS). [1]
During the COVID-19 pandemic,Fong led the COVID-19 Incidental Management Team (IMT) and is well known for giving COVID-19 updates in daily press briefings. [2]
After completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Master of Medicine in the Fiji National University,he became an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist for thirty years. He later headed the Obstetrics and Gynacelogy Unit of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. [3] [4] [5]
In February 2020,Fong was appointed to lead the COVID-19 Incidental Management Team (IMT) that dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic in Fiji which provided advice and recommendation to the Cabinet of Fiji. [3] [6]
In June 2020,he was appointed as the Acting Permanent Secretary [3] till October 2020 in which his position as Permanent Secretary became official. [1]
Fong hails from the village of Nabubu in Macuata with maternal links to Dogotuki in Vanua Levu. He attended Xavier College in Ba for his secondary level education and he is married to Monica Fong who is a Health System Coordinator for the World Health Organisation. They have one son. [1]

Dr. Bhalchandra Nilkanth Purandare,was an Indian gynaecologist. He was the son of Dr. Nilkanth Anant Purandare. He was the director of the Dr. N.A. Purandare Medical Centre for Family Welfare and Research,Mumbai. He served as the president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1973 to 1976 and the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynecological Society (MOGS) from 1966 to 1968. He was an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (1961). The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 1972,for his contributions to medicine. His brother Dr. Vithal N. Purandare was also an acclaimed obstetrician and gynaecologist,renowned for his surgical prowess. He served as President of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecology society(1973–1975) and FOGSI President in 1981. Their nephew Dr. C. N. Purandare,is a prominent gynaecologist and an ex President of FIGO.
Alastair Harvey MacLennan,,MB ChB,MD,FRCOG,FRANZCOG is a Scottish-Australian physician,professor of obstetrics and gynaecology,medical researcher,and a community health advocate. He studied and practised medicine in Glasgow,Chicago,and Oxford before moving to Australia in 1977 to take up a position at the University of Adelaide,where he went on to become the Professor and Head of the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2006. He retired from his full-time academic position in 2013,and he is now Emeritus Professor of Medicine. He leads research projects at the Robinson Research Institute,and he is Head of the university's Cerebral Palsy Research Group.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Fiji is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The first case of the disease in Fiji was reported on 19 March 2020 in Lautoka. as of 3 January 2022,the country has had a total of 55,009 cases as of which 2,417 are currently active and 702 deaths,with cases reported on all divisions of the country. Apart from the COVID-19 deaths,621 COVID-19 positive patients have died from pre-existing non-COVID-19 related illnesses. In March 2021,Fiji became the first Pacific island country to receive COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX initiative with frontline workers and first responders the first to be vaccinated. As of 2 January 2022,more than 600,000 (98%) Fijians have received their first jab of the vaccine and almost 560,000 (92%) Fijians have received their second jab and are fully vaccinated. To date,only the AstraZeneca vaccine,Moderna vaccine and the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine have been deployed in the country. The country have also administered booster shots. Vaccination is mandated,however only to the adult population.
