James Gulley (born October 3, 1965) is an American former professional basketball player, who played the center position. [1] [2] He played for Ironi Ramat Gan and Maccabi Ramat Gan in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, leading the league in rebounds for three consecutive seasons (1995–97).

Basketball career

Gulley attended Newton High School in Texas, graduating in 1985. [3] In 1984 he was named USA Today Honorable Mention. [4]

He played basketball for Lamar University for four seasons, graduating in 1988. [5] In 1986–87 Gulley led the Southland Conference with 288 rebounds and 9.9 rebounds per game, and was third with 19.8 points per game. [1] In 1987–88 he was second in the American South Conference with 312 rebounds, was second with 10.1 rebounds per game, was third with 17.6 points per game, and was eighth with 0.6 blocks per game. [1] He played in 113 career games for the Lamar Cardinals, and scored 1,832 points (16.2 ppg), had 967 rebounds (8.6 rpg), and 719 field goals, each of which is third all-time in school history. [5] He was a four-time all-conference selection, named 1985 SLC Newcomer of the Year, and named 1988 All-American South Conference. [5] [6]

Gulley played for Maccabi Rishon LeZion in the Israeli Basketball Premier League from 1994–97. [2] [7] In 1994–95 he led the league with 12.7 rebounds per game, in 1995–96 he again led it in rebounds, with 11.6 rebounds per game, and in 1996-94 he led the league in rebounds for a third consecutive season, with 10.2 per game. [7] [8] He played for Ironi Ramat Gan in the Israeli Basketball Premier League from 1998–99. [7]

Honors

In 2013 Gulley was named by the Southland Conference to the 1980s all-decade men's basketball team. [6]

He was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Fame in 2019, and Gulley's Number 54 jersey was retired. [5] [9] [10] [11]

Gulley is 6' 9" (206 cm) tall, and weighs 260 pounds. [1] [12] His hometown is Newton, Texas. [3] [12] His son is professional basketball player Jarmar Gulley.

He was diagnosed with colon cancer, and later with an advanced form of colorectal cancer by 2013. [3]

The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021, to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. After one season in the WAC, Lamar returned to the Southland Conference. The Cardinals have played home games in the Montagne Center since 1984. The Lamar University basketball team is one of the school's most storied athletic programs. The Cardinals have competed in NCAA Tournament play eleven times and six times at the NCAA Division I level with the most recent appearance in the 2012 tournament. The 1979–80 team was one of the 1980 tournament's Sweet Sixteen teams. The Cardinals have also competed in four NIT tournaments. Heading into the 2014–2015 season Lamar had a 284–143 record in the Montagne Center. The Cardinals overall record going into the 2014–2015 season was 922–818.

Joe Dawson is an American-Israeli former professional basketball player. He played high school basketball at Druid High School in his native Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and played four years of college basketball for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, leading the team in scoring and rebounding multiple times and was an all-conference selection. After going undrafted in the 1982 NBA draft, he started his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association, and was selected as an all-star in each of the three seasons he played there.
