James Mason is an Australian television and film actor and producer. He started his career participating in a series of short films and commercials. He then secured the role of Chris Pappas on the Australian soap opera Neighbours . Chris was the show's first ever gay male regular character and won Mason wide recognition, including a Logie nomination for Most Popular New Talent in 2012.

He left Neighbours in 2015 to pursue other projects. He began to appear in more short films, web series and later secured roles in the films 36 Questions, William Kelly's War and Slaughterhouse. In 2018 the actor joined the cast of Network Ten drama series Playing for Keeps , playing Jack Davies, a gay Australian Football League (AFL) player whose death forms the main narrative of the show's first season.

Early life

Mason studied a Theatre Studies VCE at Monbulk College from 2006 until 2007. [1] Mason had always enjoyed acting during High School but only decided to pursue it as a career during his final school years. [2] His father Adrian Mason and mother Aylee Sunstrom were supportive of his career aspirations. [3] He is bilingual and can speak both English and Swedish. [1]

Career

Mason began his career starring in a number of independent short films and television commercials during 2008 and 2009. [1] [4] The actor rose to prominence playing the role Chris Pappas on the Australian television soap opera Neighbours . Mason's agent secured him an audition for the role of Andrew Robinson – actor Jordan Smith won the role of Andrew, but three days later Mason was offered the chance to play Chris. [5] [6] Chris is the show's first gay ongoing character. [6] Neighbours' then executive producer Susan Bower created the character following requests from viewers in the Neighbours website discussion forums. [7] Two-thirds of actors quit the audition process for Chris when they discovered the character was gay. [8] Mason began filming for Neighbours in October 2009 and the character arrived on-screen during February 2010. [5] Mason said that he was "really excited" to play the role and added the writers had helped him to accurately portray a gay male. [5] [9] Chris was initially a guest character, but Mason was later promoted to the show's regular cast. [10] For his portrayal of Chris, Mason was nominated for Most Popular New Male Talent at the Logie Awards of 2012. [11] The actor filmed for an unaired television pilot titled SPIN in 2013. [1] In 2015, Mason decided to leave Neighbours after five years in the role. [12]

Mason secured a lead role in the 2018 film 36 Questions. The film focuses on a couple who go on a date under unusual circumstances. The actor's involvement with the film began in 2014, when he was still starring in Neighbours . [13] The movie was supposed to be released that year but only made it to post-production in 2017. [13] [14] In 2015, Mason secured a guest role in Ben Nicholas' web series titled Footballer Wants a Wife . [1] In 2016, he presented a travel documentary titled Budget Backpacker: Iceland. He travelled to Iceland and profiled his journey visiting tourist destinations for the video, which was released online. [15] In 2017, he filmed a guest role in a DCF Studio television production titled Bernie Brown. [16]

Mason took on more acting work during 2018. He played lead role of Jacob in the comedy web series titled Freudian Slip, which premiered in March. [17] Then in May it was announced that he had secured the role of Jack Davies in the Network Ten drama series Playing for Keeps , a show is about a group of AFL players and their wives' personal lives. [18] Jack is another gay character Mason has played and the series also centres around the scandal of his death. [19] [20]

In 2019 Mason had a role in the 2019 series Ms Fisher's MODern Murder Mysteries . [21] He also filmed a lead role in the independent film The Slaughterhouse Killer as Nathan. [1] In 2022, Mason reprised his Neighbours role for what was intended to be the show's final episodes. [22] Mason will appear in the upcoming film titled Residence. [23]

Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera, which has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap Sons and Daughters. Although successful in Melbourne, Neighbours underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. Neighbours became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

Scott Ian Major is an Australian actor and TV and film director, known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series Heartbreak High and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera Neighbours. After leaving Neighbours in 2013, Major returned to direct over 200 episodes of the serial. He has since gone on to direct episodes of Playing for Keeps, and two miniseries Lie With Me and Riptide. Major reprised his role as Rivers in the 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High.

Christopher Milligan is an Australian actor. From 2008 to 2022, he played Kyle Canning in the television soap opera Neighbours. He initially started out as a recurring cast member, until he was promoted to the regular cast in 2011. He departed the program in 2016 but returned in 2019 until April 2022. He then returned again for the show's final episodes in July 2022. Milligan also played the lead role of David in supernatural fantasy show Dead Gorgeous, and made guest appearances in Rush, The Pacific, Winners & Losers, and Arrow. He appeared in the horror film The Gallows Act II, and reprised his Neighbours role after a three-year absence.

Aidan Foster is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Bob Morley. Both the character and Morley's casting was announced on 19 June 2011. The actor began filming his first scenes that same week. Aidan was introduced to Neighbours as a love interest for established character Chris Pappas. Morley revealed that Aidan's sexuality did not affect his decision in accepting the role, as it does not define him. Morley was initially contracted for six months and he stated that he was happy to stay with the soap for longer. He made his first screen appearance as Aidan during the episode broadcast on 19 August 2011. Morley took a ten-week break from Neighbours in April 2012 to appear in the feature film, Blinder. He made his final appearance as Aidan on 17 January 2013.

Chris Pappas is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by James Mason. Mason originally read for the role of Andrew Robinson, before he was called back to audition for Chris three days later. He was told during the audition that the character would be gay. He began filming his first scenes in October 2009, and he made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 25 February 2010. Executive producer Susan Bower said the character was created because of requests from young viewers in the Neighbours website's online forums. The character's sexuality storyline was also based on the real life experiences of the show's writers. Chris became the first prominent, regular male homosexual character in the show's twenty-five-year history. He was the second ongoing homosexual character overall, following Lana Crawford's introduction in 2004.

"Episode 6646", also known as "The Eclipse", is the 6646th episode of the Australian soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on Eleven on 20 May 2013. The episode was written by Jason Herbison and directed by Laurence Wilson. Episode 6646 revolves around an annular eclipse, which changes the lives of several Ramsay Street residents. It was first teased by executive producer Richard Jasek in January 2013. The episode saw several storylines play out with Kyle Canning sustaining serious damage to his eyesight, a child kidnapping, the introduction of a new family and the return of two former characters; Mark Brennan and Brad Willis.

Hii attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art for three years, and appeared in various theatre productions, before being cast in his first television role. Hii starred as Van Tuong Nguyen in the four-part miniseries Better Man and was cast as Hudson Walsh in the soap opera Neighbours in 2013. Nate Kinski is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Meyne Wyatt. The actor sent a taped audition to the show's casting agent and was invited to the studios for a call-back, before learning he had won the role. Wyatt relocated to Melbourne for filming and became the first indigenous actor to join the regular cast of Neighbours since the show began in 1985. Wyatt made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 18 August 2014. The character departed on 2 June 2016.

Travis Robert Burns is an Australian actor and model. He first came to prominence with his role in the American action-drama television series, SAF3 (2013). He played Tyler Brennan in the long-running Australian television soap opera Neighbours from 2015 to 2019. Sarah Roberts is an Australian television and film actress. After training at the 16th Street Actors Studio, Roberts took part in the 2012 reality television series Bollywood Star, in which Australians compete for a chance to work with Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt. She has made guest appearances in various Australian television shows, including Jack Irish and INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. After appearing in the 2014 Neighbours spin-off series Brennan on the Run as Sienna Matthews, Roberts joined the cast of the main show in a recurring capacity. Playing for Keeps is an Australian drama television series, which began airing on Network 10 on 19 September 2018. The series was created from a concept by the network's head of drama Rick Maier. It centres on the wives and girlfriends of the players at the fictional Southern Jets Football Club. Its ensemble cast includes Madeleine West, Annie Maynard, Cece Peters, Olympia Valance, Isabella Giovinazzo, and Jeremy Lindsay Taylor. Playing for Keeps was renewed for a second season, which premiered on 16 October 2019.

George Pullar is an Australian actor from Brisbane. He is known for his roles as Larry Forbes in the fifth season of the Australian drama series A Place to Call Home and Daniel Fletcher in the Network Ten drama series Playing for Keeps. His performance as Larry garnered an AACTA Award nomination and the Casting Guild of Australia named him one of Australia's "Rising Stars Award" recipients in 2018. Jackson Gallagher is an Australian actor and professional photographer from Victoria, Australia. Gallagher began his career starring in the Nine Network children's series The Saddle Club and later ventured into film playing the titular character in the 2013 horror film Patrick. He gained wider recognition for his role as Josh Barrett in the soap opera Home and Away. Ethan Panizza is an Australian television actor and former football player from Albany, Western Australia. Panizza was interested in acting from an early age but chose to pursue a career in Australian rules football. He is the son of successful footballer Darrell Panizza and played in the West Australian Football League. He played his last professional game in 2014 and decided to concentrate on his acting career. He began by appearing in short film and television commercials. In 2018, Panizza took the role of Rusty O'Reilly in the Network Ten drama series Playing for Keeps.

Nicholas Russell is an Australian television actor, producer and director from Melbourne. Known professionally as Nick Russell, he began his career aged twelve when he starred in the Nine Network children's series Pig's Breakfast as Rodney Green. He studied science/law at university and took a job with a law firm which filled his time between acting roles which included guest parts on the soap opera Neighbours and the comedy drama series Sleuth 101.

Tom O'Sullivan is an Australian television, film and theatre actor. O’Sullivan was born in Perth, Western Australia, and later relocated to Sydney to study at the National Institute of Dramatic Art where he graduated in 2003. His first television role was a guest role on the soap opera Home and Away and was followed by playing Tom Huppatz in the ABC TV mini-series Rain Shadow. In 2010, O'Sullivan played Sean 'Grunter' Sinclair in the crime drama Underbelly: The Golden Mile and joined the main cast of Nine Network drama Cops LAC playing Senior Constable Nathan Holt. He has also portrayed William Chambers in the TVNZ 1 drama When We Go To War and Michael Shrimpton in the Seven Network drama series Molly.

Ellen Grimshaw is an Australian actress and writer of theatre. She is known for her roles in films and television dramas. Her performance as Chaar in Bad Behaviour garnered her the "Best Supporting Actress" accolade at the 2010 Melbourne Underground Film Festival. In 2021, she played Casey in the Australian drama series Jack Irish. In 2024, Grimshaw joined the cast of the soap opera Neighbours, playing Veronica McLain.
