James Tor Monybuny is a South Sudanese politician who has been the deputy governor of Upper Nile State since January 2021,and was the first governor of Central Upper Nile State from 2017-2019. Monybuny is from Baliet,and is a member of the Ngok Lual Yak section of the Padang Dinka. [1] Earlier in his career,Monybuny was a pastor for the Presbyterian Church in South Sudan and the Baliet County commissioner. [2]
After the creation of Central Upper Nile State from Eastern Nile State on January 14,2017,Monybuny became governor, [3] [4] due in part to ties with Vice President Taban Deng Gai. [1] On January 28,2018,Shilluk youth protesters blocked Monybuny's from entering the PoC camp in Malakal. [5] Monybuny,along with three other governors,was removed from office by Salva Kiir on May 20,2019. Kiir said the governors were not present in their states. [6] Monybuny was replaced as governor of Central Upper Nile State by Peter Chol Wal. [7]
While governors for nine of South Sudan's ten states had been appointed in the summer of 2020,the governor and deputy governor positions for Upper Nile State remained unfilled due to a dispute over the nomination of Johnson Olonyi as governor. When Budhok Ayang Kur was appointed governor in January 2021,Monybuny was appointed deputy governor by the government in order to appease the Padang Dinka,even though the position was supposed to be appointed by the South Sudan Opposition Alliance. Khorfulus County is a county in the Eastern Nile of South Sudan. Khorfulus County is the Land of Dinka Padang that comprises Luach,Rut,Thoi and Paweny Dinka. These group of people are pastoralist and practice small scale farming. They border Shilluk to the North,Dinka Ngok to the East and Nuer to the South and West.
Kuol Manyang is a South Sudanese politician. He is a member of the SPLM. He became governor of Jonglei state on 15 December 2007,following the first former governor,Philip Thon Leek from Dinka Bor,to curb cattle raiding and abduction of children in the region.
The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF),formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA),is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War,led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005,Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010,the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers.

Gabriel Gatwech Chan,more commonly known by the nickname Tang-Ginye or Tanginye meaning "long pipe",was a Nuer and a commander in various primarily Nuer rebel militias in South Sudan. General Tanginye led a southern border militia allied to the Khartoum government during Sudan's civil war. Members of the Sudanese armed forces loyal to Tanginye in Malakal clashed with the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2006,killing about 150 people,and in 2009 in breach of the peace deal. In April 2011,clashes between his militia and the SPLA in the state of Jonglei killed at least 57 according to government officials. Shortly thereafter,Tanginye surrendered to SPLA forces and was placed under house arrest in Juba awaiting charges against him. During the South Sudanese Civil War,he allied with the SPLA-IO and later Lam Akol's militia,a Juba linked rebel group called the National Democratic Movement (NDM) and became its chief of staff. In January 2017 he visited a NDM-allied group,the Tiger Faction New Forces,in the Hamra area in the northern Upper Nile. In course of this visit,the Tigers were attacked by SPLM-IO-affiliated fighters belonging to the militia of John Uliny,and Tanginye was killed alongside most of the Tigers.
Ethnic violence in South Sudan has a long history among South Sudan's varied ethnic groups. South Sudan has 64 tribes with the largest being the Dinkas,who constitute about 35% of the population and predominate in government. The second largest are the Nuers. Conflict is often aggravated among nomadic groups over the issue of cattle and grazing land and is part of the wider Sudanese nomadic conflicts.
Baliet is an administrative county in the Upper Nile State,South Sudan. The County headquarters is the town of Baliet,located on the north side of the Sobat River 20 km south east of Malakal,the capital city of Upper Nile State.
The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and 10 others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the SPLM –in opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
John Uliny,also known as Johnson Olony,Johnson Olonyi, and John Olony,is a South Sudanese militia leader. He is a member of the Shilluk ethnic group.
Gogrial State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it bordered Twic to the north,Aweil East to the northwest,Aweil to the west,Wau to the southwest,Tonj to the southeast,and Northern Liech to the northeast.
Eastern Nile was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 14 January 2017 when it was divided into Central Upper Nile State and Northern Upper Nile State. It was located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it was part of the former states of Upper Nile and Jonglei. The state bordered the states of Eastern Bieh,Latjoor,Western Bieh,Western Nile,and the country of Ethiopia to the east.

The Tiger Faction New Forces was a Shilluk militia that took part in the South Sudanese Civil War with the aim of reversing the division of South Sudan into 28 states in order to restore the territory of the Shilluk Kingdom per its 1956 borders. Led by Yoanis Okiech,the TFNF originally split from the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in late October 2015 and subsequently started an insurgency against the SPLM government. In course of 2016,however,it also came into conflict with SPLM-IO rebels,leading to inter-rebel fighting which resulted in Okiech's death and the group's destruction in January 2017.

Timothy Taban Juch is a South Sudanese politician and the former governor of Akobo State in South Sudan.
Hussein Abdelbagi Akol Agany is one of the vice presidents of South Sudan. Abdelbagi is a Malual Dinka from Northern Bahr el Ghazal. Abdelbagi,born in the late 1960s,was a son of the politically influential Malual Dinka tribal leader Sultan Abdelbagi Akol (1928–2020),who was among other things considered the spiritual head of the South Sudanese Muslims. Gen. Abdelbagi was the Chief of General Staff of the South Sudan Patriotic Army,which became part of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance. On August 25,2018,the SSPM/A split,with Abdelbagi creating a faction that claimed to have removed Costello Garang Ring for rejecting the peace process and attacking communities on the border with Sudan. On July 23,2019,the SSPM/A faction of Costello Garang Ring claimed to remove Abdelbagi from office. He became the speaker of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance faction led by Gabriel Changson Chang after it split in November 2018. As part of the unity government deal the SSOA was allowed to pick one out of the five vice presidents. The SSOA failed to decide on a vice president,so they authorized president Salva Kiir to pick from a list of six leaders. On February 23,2020,Kiir picked Abdelbagi,making him the fifth vice president. Abdelbagi is the first Muslim Vice President of South Sudan and the highest ranking Muslim to be a part of any government in South Sudan.
The Battle of Bor was one of the first battles of the South Sudanese Civil War,consisting of a series of clashes for the city of Bor,the capital of Jonglei State,between the SPLA and SPLA defectors under Peter Gadet,part of the force that would become the SPLA-IO. The city changed hands four times between December 18,2013 and January 18,2014,ultimately leaving the SPLA in control.

General Saeed Chawul Lom is a South Sudanese police chief who was Inspector General of the police. Lom was appointed in 2017 by a presidential decree issued by President Salva Kiir following the sacking of General Makur Marol Adout. Lom served 11 months as the head of South Sudan police before his removal from office by a presidential decree. Lom had served as commissioner of police in the newly created Jubek State. Prior to the creation of the state of South Sudan,Lom worked in Khartoum for several years where he was dismissed three times for breach of police work ethics and conflict of interest. He was reinstated into the South Sudan police services along with other dismissed generals during the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
