Jan Olov Ferdinand Sandquist (born 6 August 1932) is a Swedish journalist.

Career

Sandquist was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was the son of Ferdinand Sandquist and Anna (née Hjort). He was a journalist at Mariestads-Tidningen in Mariestad in 1949, Västergötlands Annonsblad in 1953 and Göteborgs-Tidningen in 1955. Sandqvist worked in the press office at Vattenfall in 1960 and was a freelance journalist in South America from 1964 to 1967. He was foreign correspondent in South America for Sveriges Radio from 1968 to 1974. [1]

On 29 June 1973 Sandquist and his colleague Leonardo Henrichsen were in Santiago de Chile to do a report on the risk of a coup d'état known as the Tanquetazo , a prelude to the coup on September 11 the same year. Sandqvist and Henrichsen had together covered 16 coups in Latin America and had been shot at several times. While filming the events outside La Moneda Palace, Henrichsen and Sandquist were fired at and Henrichsen was fatally shot by a soldier before collapsing in the arms of Sandquist. [2] Sandqvist later said that the tragic event in Santiago de Chile was the most shocking of his career. [3]

Sandquist returned to Sweden in 1974 to be the host of Rapport in TV2, a position he stayed in until 1979. Sandquist was then foreign correspondent in United States from 1979 to 1982 and employee of the Rapport editorial team from 1982 to 1983. He was district manager in Örebro from 1983 to 1986 and communications manager at SIDA from 1986. [1]

Sandquist, good friend with ambassador Harald Edelstam, has written two books about Edelstam's life together with Germán Perotti.

Personal life

Sandquist was married 1954-69 to journalist Marianne Sandberg (born 1931), the daughter of skipper Gustaf Lindgren and Hilma (née Almroth). [4] He remarried in 1971 to Kerstin Ahlström (born 1937), the daughter of captain Sven Ahlström and the artist Lena (née Malmberg). [1]

Marcus Wallenberg Jr. Swedish sportsman and businessman

Marcus "Dodde" Wallenberg Jr., was a Swedish banker and business manager. He was the most influential representative for the Swedish industrial tradition and Swedish business’ during the 20th century. He was the CEO of Stockholms Enskilda Bank 1946–1958 and during half a century – from the early 1930s until his death in 1982 – he led and reconstructed many of Sweden's largest companies. During World War Two Marcus together with Erik Boheman were appointed to conduct the Swedish trade negotiations.

Stig H:son Ericson

Admiral Stig (Hansson) H:son Ericson was a Swedish Navy naval officer. He was Chief of the Coastal Fleet from 1950 to 1953 and the Chief of the Navy from 1953 to 1961. After retiring from the Navy in 1961, Ericson held court offices in the Royal Court of Sweden. He was First Marshal of the Court from 1962 to 1973 and Marshal of the Realm from 1966 to 1976.

Jacob Wallenberg (1892–1980)

Jacob "Juju" Wallenberg was a Swedish banker and industrial leader. Wallenberg held various central positions in Stockholms Enskilda Bank. He was also chairman of the board of several companies, including Stora Kopparbergs Bergslag and Orkla Mining Company. From 1934 to 1944 he was a member of the Swedish governmental commission for trade with Germany.

Arne Mohlin

Lieutenant General Arne Herman Mohlin was a Swedish Army officer. Mohlin served as Chief of the Army Staff and the General Staff Corps from 1961 to 1963 and he was commanding officer of the VI Military District/Upper Norrland Military District from 1963 to 1972. Mohlin is also famous for being one of two survivors of SS Hansa which was torpedoed in 1944 which killed 84 people.

Major General Karl Gottfrid Björck was a Swedish Army officer. He served as Inspector of the Swedish Army Service Troops from 1946 to 1949, and as such, was chief of transportation of the White Buses operation to rescue concentration camp inmates in areas under Nazi control and transport them to Sweden.

Ivar Gewert

Lieutenant General Gustav Ivar Vilhelm Gewert was a Swedish Army officer. His senior commands include Inspector of the Swedish Army Service Troops, Quartermaster-General of the Swedish Army and head of the Swedish Army Quartermaster Corps, vice chief of the Royal Swedish Army Materiel Administration and vice chief of the Royal Swedish Army Supply Administration.
