Jan Lodewyk Hoek Serfontein (born 23 May 1944) is a South African politician and commercial farmer who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1997 and then in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1997 to 2009. From 2007 to 2009,he served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture,Conservation and Environment under Premier Edna Molewa.
Serfontein was born in Potchefstroom in the Transvaal on 23 May 1944. [1] He matriculated in 1961 and completed a diploma in agriculture in 1963. From 1964 onwards,he worked at his family's commercial farm. [1]
In South Africa's first post-apartheid elections in 1994,he was elected to represent the ANC in the National Assembly,the lower house of the South African Parliament. He served in his seat until 1997,when he resigned to join the ANC caucus in the North West Provincial Legislature. He was re-elected to the provincial legislature in 1999 [2] and 2004. [3]
In June 2007,he joined the North West Executive Council when Premier Molewa appointed him as MEC for Agriculture,Conservation and Environment. He succeeded Mandlenkosi Mayisela,who had controversially been fired,and the Mail &Guardian that his appointment caused tensions in the provincial leadership of the ANC,which felt that Molewa had not sufficiently consulted them before making the announcement. [4] He left the Executive Council and the provincial legislature after the 2009 general election.
Serfontein's commercial farm included one of the largest chicken farms in the country,Boskop Layer Chickens. [5] In August 2008, Beeld reported on alleged animal abuse at the farm,with a former employee claiming that the farm habitually dumped up to 70,000 male chicks in an empty cement dam each week and left them to die. Woolworths,a major chain grocery,announced that Boskop would no longer be its egg supplier, [5] and the South African Poultry Association suspended the farm's membership pending further inquiry. [6] However,despite the press widely reporting that Serfontein was directly implicated, [7] the company said that Serfontein had retired and was not a shareholder or director at Boskop;instead,the farm was run by his son,also named Jan. [6]
Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.
Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi is a South African politician who has been Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlement,Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the North West province since November 2022. In August 2022,he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West,a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009.

The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the North West Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the North West,an office held since September 2021 by Bushy Maape of the African National Congress (ANC).

Louisa Lorato Mabe is a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2009 to 2012 and as MEC for Education from 2012 to 2013. Before joining the North West Provincial Legislature,she represented her party,the African National Congress (ANC),in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009. Premier Thandi Modise fired her from the Executive Council in June 2013 after she was accused of involvement in procurement irregularities.
Frans Phenye Vilakazi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009,when he did not gain re-election. He also served in the North West Executive Council:under Premier Edna Molewa,he was the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Housing from May 2004 and MEC for Roads,Transport and Safety from June 2007. Before that,he was MEC for Transport under Premier Popo Molefe.
Elliot Mandlenkosi Mayisela is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. He also served in the North West Executive Council from 2001 to 2007. In July 2007,the leadership of the North West ANC removed Mayisela from his position as Member of the Executive Council (MEC),apparently as a result of factional divisions which pitted Mayisela against Supra Mahumapelo's so-called Taliban grouping. The party also attempted to withdraw Mayisela from the provincial legislature,but their decision in that regard was overturned by the High Court.
Ndleleni Moses Duma was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until his death in 2018. He also served in the National Assembly between 2009 and 2014. He was a Member of the North West Executive Council from 2004 to 2009 during the premiership of Edna Molewa;during the same period,he was convicted on theft charges in connection with his involvement in the Travelgate scandal during an earlier period of service in the national Parliament.
Jerry Dimotana Thibedi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2019 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. He was the inaugural Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature between 1994 and 1999 and subsequently served in the North West Executive Council between 1999 and 2009 under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa.
Oabetswe Johannes Tselapedi was a South African politician who served in the North West Provincial Legislature. He was the second Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and then was the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from April 2004 until November 2010,when he was fired by newly elected Premier Thandi Modise.
Darkey Ephraim Africa,also spelled Darkie Afrika,is a South African politician and diplomat who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2009. During that time,he served in the North West Executive Council under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa. He later served as Consul-General of the South African High Commission in Nigeria.
Howard Debeza Yawa is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature and North West Executive Council. Under Premier Edna Molewa,he served as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works from April 2004 until May 2007 and as MEC for Local Government and Housing from May 2007 until May 2009. After the 2009 general election,he served as MEC for Public Safety under Premier Maureen Modiselle. He was fired from the latter position in November 2010 by Modiselle's successor,Thandi Modise.
Boitumelo Shadrack Tshwene is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature. He also served in the North West Executive Council under Premiers Maureen Modiselle and Thandi Modise from May 2009 to May 2012.
Mahlomola Johnson "Jomo" Khasu is a South African politician,diplomat and civil servant who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1999. After that he served in the North West Provincial Legislature,where he was a member of the North West Executive Council until Premier Popo Molefe fired him in January 2001. He was a member of the United Democratic Front national executive committee during the 1980s and later served as South African Ambassador to Gabon.
Shepherd Malusi Mayatula,sometimes misspelled Shepherd Mayathula,is a retired South African politician and economist from the Eastern Cape. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009 and later from 2011 to 2014. During that time,he chaired the Portfolio Committee on Education from 2004 to 2009.
