The tournament was held from 6 August to 8 August 2016, starting with group matches before finishing with the medal ceremony on 8 August.

Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the nation's fifteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1956, having boycotted the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Games.

This article shows the roster of all participating teams for the women's rugby sevens competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Each roster could have up to 12 athletes, however in July 2021, the International Olympic Committee allowed alternates to also compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant each team could have up to 13 athletes.
