Jason Thrasher is an American photographer with a special focus on musicians. He was honored for his 2017 book, Athens Potluck, as a 2018 Georgia Author of the Year. [1] His work has been exhibited at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the Corcoran School of Fine Art in Washington, D.C., the Yerba Buena Arts Center in San Francisco, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Atrium Gallery at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. Early life and career

Jason Thrasher is from Huntsville, Alabama. As a young skateboarder he met photographer, J. Grant Brittain from Transworld Skateboarding who was in Huntsville to photograph Regional competitions at Underground Skate Park. Thrasher was inspired to become a photographer and studied at the University of Alabama-Birmingham before moving to Athens, Georgia where he studied and graduated from the University of Georgia. He began photographing musical acts. His photographs have appeared in Rolling Stone , [3] [4] Spin , Entertainment Weekly and for labels ATO and Warner Brothers. [5] Jason Thrasher also produces music and documentary videos. [6]

Music photography

In the photography book, Athens Potluck, Jason Thrasher produced a chain of images and interviews with 33 musicians whose careers were connected to Athens, Georgia. [7] Artists featured include Will Cullen Hart and Julian Koster of the Elephant 6 Collective, Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers, Vanessa Briscoe Hay of Pylon, and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. The photo essay on Art Rosenbaum whose album, The Art of Field Recording won a Grammy Award in 2008 incorporates images of his art and music. [8] An exhibit that featured images from Athens Potluck was held at the Georgia Theatre where the book is on permanent display. [9]

India Perspectives

The Athens Institute for Contemporary Art exhibition, “Jason Thrasher: Uncovered Perspectives: India 21 Years Later, ” documents various locations in India before the Internet brought many changes to daily life. Taken with a Leica camera the 33mm black and white negatives were made clearer using digital techniques. [10] The exhibit opened October 13, 2019 and included concerts of experimental music.

The music of Athens, Georgia includes a wide variety of popular music and was an important part of the early evolution of alternative rock and new wave. The city is well known as the home of chart-topping bands like R.E.M., Widespread Panic, The B-52's, and several long-time indie rock groups. Athens hosts the Athens Symphony Orchestra and other music institutions, as well as prominent local music media, such as the college radio station WUOG. Much of the modern Athens music scene relies on students from the large University of Georgia campus in the city. The University sponsors Western classical performances and groups specializing in other styles.

Robert "Bob" Emett Seidemann was an American graphic artist and photographer. He was known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by Rolling Stone, by record labels, and in books.

Bob Gruen is an American author and photographer known for his rock and roll photographs. By the mid 1970s, Gruen was already regarded as one of the foremost photographers in music working with major artist such as John Lennon, Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Kiss. He also covered emerging new wave and punk rock bands, including the New York Dolls, the Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Blondie. Gruen has also appeared in films.

Herb “Herbie” Greene is an American photographer known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by Rolling Stone, by record labels, and in books. Greene's photographed subjects include the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, The Pointer Sisters, Carlos Santana, and Sly Stone.

Linda Connor is an American photographer living in San Francisco, California. She is known for her landscape photography.

Pep Williams is an American fine art and street photographer, director, entrepreneur, and former professional skateboarder who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, California. He has traveled globally creating material for his photographic exhibitions. He is one of the only photographers to have ever been granted access into the California State Prison System where he created a series of inmate portraitures entitled, Behind Bars.

Catherine Simon is an American portrait photographer and writer. She is known for her photographs of influential musicians, artists, and writers, including The Clash, Patti Smith, Madonna, Andy Warhol, and William S. Burroughs. One of her photographs of Bob Marley was used on the front cover of his 1978 album, Kaya.

Atiba Jefferson is an American photographer and skateboarder.

Nancy Floyd, born in Monticello, Minnesota in 1956, is an American photographer. Her photographic subjects mainly concern women and the female body during youth, pregnancy, and while aging. Her project She's Got a Gun comprises portraits of women and their firearms, which is linked to her Texas childhood. Floyd's work has been shown in 18 solo exhibitions and is held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography and the High Museum of Art. Floyd is a professor emeritus of photography at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University.

Ithaka Darin Pappas, known professionally as Ithaka, is an American-born multidisciplinary artist of Greek ancestry who creates using music, writing, sculpture and photography. He has authored a collection of short stories, entitled Ravenshark Chronicles published in international magazines and periodicals, which have sometimes been the basis for his travel-oriented lyrical content. In a 2005 article for the magazine Waves, journalist Ricardo Macario described Ithaka as "The Miscellaneous Man". In a 2008 review of Ithaka's sixth album Saltwater Nomad, the online surf-culture platform Surfline stated that "the artist effortlessly traverses at ease between all of his choses mediums of expression [music, sculpture, writing and photography]", and that "his life's journey is a soulful balancing act somewhere between the worlds of euphoric creation and aquatic diversion."

Jeremy Ayers was an American artist, writer, photographer, and musician. Ayers was a member of the Athens, Georgia, creative community, published three books of photography, and co-wrote songs for The B-52's and R.E.M. In 2021, a newly discovered species of ant was named in his honor.

David T. Schubert was an American graffiti artist and professional photographer recognized for his photographs of skateboarding and graffiti.
