Jatugriha is a 1964 Indian Bengali social drama film directed by Tapan Sinha and produced by Uttam Kumar based on the novel of the same name by Subodh Ghosh. [1] The film was produced and released on 20 March 1964 under the banner of Uttam Kumar Films Private Limited. The music of the film was composed by the legendary Ashish Khan. This was the fifth film produced by Uttam Kumar. A 1987 Bollywood film Ijaazat , directed by Gulzar, follows a similar plot. [2] [3] [4] The film stars Uttam Kumar, Arundhati Devi, Anil Chatterjee and Bikash Roy.It was Bengali classic movie of 1964.
Shatadal meets Madhuri after a long time in a railway station and their story is narrated through a series of flashbacks. They actually were a happily married couple. Satadal was a successful engineer who lived with his wife Madhuri. But day-by-day, their relationship runs into emotional stress due to childlessness. Madhuri cannot bear a child and her husband Shatadal is fond of children. Finally, the couple decided to break up. When they meet in the station, they realize their fondness for each other has not died.

The story of the film was written by the famous author Subodh Ghosh. Uttam Kumar was impressed by the story and wanted to produce it as a movie and requested Tapan Sinha to direct the project. This was the fifth film produced by Uttam and the third film under his own banner Uttam Kumar Films Private Limited. Uttam wanted to do something unique and Jatugriha perfectly served his purpose. Their pair became a brand in Bengal. They delivered 27 films and almost all the films became box-office success. Uttam Kumar waned a versatile actress to play the main female character of the story and hence Arundhati Devi was cast. Arundhati Devi acted with Uttam Kumar in earlier films like Bicharak 1959, and Jhinder Bandi 1961. [5]
The film was released in India on 20 March 1964 - the same year when Satyajit Ray's Charulata was released. Jatugriha literally with English translates and subtitle as The Burnt Home. The film was distributed by Chayabani Private Limited. [6]
Jatugriha regarded as one of the best film made in golden era and evergreen classic. The films remembering for it's story direction and performances. The film did not perform well at the box office and totally different and ahead of it's time. [7]
The film was remade again in Bollywood in 1987 as Ijaazat directed by the legendary Gulzar starring Rekha and Nasiruddin Shah in lead role.
Subodh Ghosh was a noted Indian author of Bengali literature and a journalist associated with the Kolkata-based daily newspaper Anandabazar Patrika. His best known work, Bharat Premkatha, is about the romances of epic Indian characters and has remained very popular in the Bengali literary world. Many of his stories have been adapted in Indian films, most notably Ritwik Ghatak's Ajantrik (1958) and Bimal Roy's Sujata (1959). He won the Filmfare Award for Best Story twice, for Bimal Roy's Sujata (1960) and for Gulzar's Ijaazat in 1989. He was selected as a recipient for the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award (1977) but he refused it.
Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Jhinder Bondi is a 1961 Indian Bengali-language historical drama film produced by Bholanath Roy under his banner B.N Productions and directed by Tapan Sinha, starring Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Arundhati Devi and Tarun Kumar in lead roles. Uttam Kumar played a dual role in this film. The film's music was composed by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Sabyasachi is a 1977 Bengali language period political action thriller film directed by Pijush Basu. Based on the novel Pather Dabi written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the film produced by Asim Sarkar under the banner of Usha Films. It stars Uttam Kumar in the titular role, alongside Supriya Devi, Bikash Roy, Kiran Lahiri and Tarun Kumar in lead roles. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Nidan Bandhu Banerjee and particulary Uttam Kumar himself, marking his second film as a composer after Kal Tumi Aleya (1966). Set in British India, it revolves around a freedom fighter as well as revolutionary Dr. Sabyasachi Mallick, arresting whom is very difficult for the police as he always escape through his presence of mind and jaw dropping disguises. When he comes to Burma to continue his foundation 'Pather Dabi' against the British raj and the Burma police service hires DCP Nimai Roy from India to bring him down.

Netaji is a Bengali biographical soap opera on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose that premiered on 14 January 2019 and aired on Bengali GEC Zee Bangla.
