Jay Jacobs is an American college athletics director who most recently served as the executive associate athletics director for external affairs for the Florida Gators and was the former director of athletics for the Auburn Tigers athletic department from 2004 to 2017. He was named Auburn's 14th director of athletics on December 22, 2004, after working in almost every area of the Auburn athletic department for the previous 20 years.[ citation needed ] Jacobs announced on November 3, 2017 that he would step down effective June 1, 2018, and a replacement was announced and hired in January 2018. Early life

Jacobs grew up 20 miles from Auburn in Lafayette, Alabama where he was a lifelong Auburn fan. He attended and graduated in 1979 [2] from Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, but came back to Auburn for college. He became a walk-on on the Tiger football team and lettered as an offensive tackle in 1982 and 1983. [3] [ non-primary source needed ] While at Auburn he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. In 1983, he was named to the Los Angeles Times Walk-On All American Team [4] and was a member of the SEC championship team. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1985 and his MBA in 1988, both from Auburn. [3] [ non-primary source needed ]

Career

After he finished playing college football, Jacobs became the football coach at Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn in 1984. In 1985, he was brought back to Auburn athletics as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the football team. From 1986 to 1988 he was a graduate assistant football coach. He was named conditioning coach in 1988. [3] [ non-primary source needed ]

He moved into the athletics department office in 1991 when he became assistant athletics director. In 1994, he was made associate athletics director for operations. In 2001, he was named senior associate athletics director where he was in charge of Tigers Unlimited. From 2005 to 2018 he served as Auburn University’s athletics director. On June 5, 2018 he was hired by the University of Florida Athletic Association to replace Mike Hill as the executive associate athletics director for external affairs. [5]

In June 2023 Jacobs retired after spending 40 years working in collegiate athletics. [6]

2008 football coaching change

In December 2008, Jacobs came under considerable criticism [7] [8] [9] for the resignation of head football coach Tommy Tuberville and subsequent hiring of former Iowa State football coach, Gene Chizik. [10]

The public perception of the 2008 coaching search was so negative [11] that it created a groundswell of opposition to Jacobs by many Auburn fans, students and alumni. [12] [13] However, Jacobs was later vindicated when Chizik, in his second year, won the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. [14]

Chizik played college football at the University of Florida in 1981 for head coach Charley Pell.

The 2002 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University in the 2002 NCAA Division I-A football season. Auburn, led by head coach Tommy Tuberville, finished with record of 9–4, including a 5–3 record in the Southeastern Conference. Following a disappointing 7–5 finish the previous season, the coaching staff of the 2002 Tigers featured two prominent new members. Bobby Petrino was hired as the new offensive coordinator, and Gene Chizik joined the staff as the Tigers' new defensive coordinator. Petrino left following the season to assume the head coaching job at Louisville, while Chizik remained at Auburn through the 2004 season before leaving for the defensive coordinator position at Texas. The Tigers finished the season ranked #14 in the AP Poll and #16 in the Coaches Poll.

Arthur Gustavo Malzahn III is an American football coach. He is currently the head coach at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He was the head football coach at Auburn University from 2013 to 2020. He helped lead the 2010 Auburn Tigers to a national championship. As head coach at Auburn, he led the team to a SEC Championship win and an appearance in the 2014 national championship. Malzahn has coached Heisman winner Cam Newton and two Heisman finalists: Nick Marshall and Tre Mason, including coaching 14 All-Americans. During Malzahn's tenure at Auburn, he was the second-longest tenured head coach at one school in the SEC, behind Nick Saban. Out of active head coaches, Malzahn also holds the best record against Coach Saban.

The 2007 Auburn Tigers football team represented Auburn University during the 2007 NCAA Division I FBS football season. Head coach Tommy Tuberville returned for his ninth season at Auburn, the third longest tenure among SEC head coaches in 2007. He was joined by returning offensive coordinator Al Borges and returning defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Auburn played its eight-game home schedule at Jordan–Hare Stadium, the ninth largest on-campus stadium in the NCAA in 2007, seating 87,451. Conference foe Vanderbilt returned to the schedule while non-conference opponents South Florida and Tennessee Tech played the Tigers for the first time. The Tigers finished the season ranked #14 in the Coaches Poll and #15 in the AP Poll.

Travis Williams is an American football coach and a former linebacker. He is the defensive coordinator for the University of Arkansas, a position he has held since 2023. He played college football for Auburn and professionally for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL). He also coached for Auburn, Northern Iowa, Creekside High School, and UCF.

Along with most other Auburn athletic teams, the baseball team participates in the Western division of the Southeastern Conference. Wayne Bolt is an American football coach who most recently serving as the defensive coordinator for Troy University. Previously to being named to the position, he served as the Director of Football Relations for Auburn University. Bolt took the job in 2009 upon the urging of head coach Gene Chizik. Prior to joining the Auburn staff, Bolt had previously served as defensive coordinator to Chizik at Iowa State University. Bolt also had previous connections to Auburn, having served as an assistant at the school under head coach Pat Dye.

Jeff Grimes is an American football coach, and the offensive coordinator for the Kansas Jayhawks. He was previously the offensive coordinator at both Baylor University and Brigham Young University (BYU), Louisiana State University's (LSU) offensive line coach and run game coordinator, and the offensive line coach at both Virginia Tech (2013) and Auburn University. Phillip Lolley is an American gridiron football coach. He was recently the defensive coordinator for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Previously, he was assistant coach and administrator at Auburn University. He worked for the Tigers football program since being hired by Tommy Tuberville in 1999, until he temporarily retired in 2014.

The 2015 North Carolina Tar Heels football team represented the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a member of Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 2015 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was led by fourth-year head coach Larry Fedora and played their home games at Kenan Memorial Stadium. North Carolina finished the season 11–3 overall and 8–0 in ACC play to win the ACC Coastal Division title. They represented the Coastal Division in the ACC Championship Game, where they lost to Atlantic Division champion Clemson. They were invited to the Russell Athletic Bowl, where they lost to Baylor.

He was also once athletic director for the Georgia Bulldogs. Eaves was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.
