Jay Milder (born 1934) is an American artist and a figurative expressionist painter of the second generation New York School.
Themes from the Hebrew Bible such as Jacob's Ladder and Noah's Ark, [1] and the esoteric mystical beliefs of the Kabbalah, are recurring themes in Milder's paintings which are presented as archetypal images that recur in the basic karma, make-up and need of human nature. [2]
Milder's work has been internationally exhibited and is included in the collections of many museums. He has been the subject of several retrospectives in Brazil. [3] The first was in 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro and the second, in 2007 at the National Museum Brasilia. Milder is renowned in São Paulo, one of the major international centers for street and public art, as a seminal influence on graffiti artists. [4]
Jay Milder was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1934. His grandparents, who came from Ukraine, were descendants of the Hasidic mystic, Rabbi Nachman. [5] As he listened to family stories his interest in spiritualism and mysticism increased, and became an important influence on his philosophy of life and art. Later, when he arrived in New York, he was drawn to the Theosophical Society and the teaching of Helena Blavatsky. [6]
Milder graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1952. [7] In late 1953, he traveled to Europe where he studied painting with André L'Hote, and sculpture with Ossip Zadkine. He also spent a lot of time studying art at the Louvre Museum, and at the studio of Stanley Hayter. During Milder's time in Paris, the paintings of the Jewish painter Chaïm Soutine, became a primary influence on his own paintings and sculptures. [6]
Milder returned to the United States in 1956, and he began studying painting at the Chicago Art Institute. His drawing teacher, Isabel McKinnen, introduced him to the compositional theories of the Abstract Expressionists, notably, the push/pull method of creating spatial value and depth through abstract forms and color arrangement. [8] During his time as a student in Chicago, Milder exhibited with the Momentum Group, an alliance of emerging artists who were particularly dedicated to the progression of figurative art and its global origins. In 1957, Milder spent the summer in Mexico where he exhibited in Puebla and received the Mexican Government's Honor Award for artists. Back in the United States, Milder and his family moved to New Dorp Beach in Staten Island, in order to raise his daughters without fear of eviction. [ citation needed ] He created a studio in the abandoned concrete seaside hospital of the St. John's Guild where he could produce long paintings in its wings and host parties for friends from the city. In the summer of 1958, Milder studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He exhibited his work at the Sun Gallery, with his contemporaries, including Mary Frank, Red Grooms, Bob Thompson, Lester Johnson, Emilio Cruz and Alex Katz, among others. During this period his painting began to incorporate iconography of birds, animals, humans and animal/human hybrids. That same year, Milder, Bob Thompson and Red Grooms, founded the City Gallery in the Chelsea section of New York City. The gallery moved downtown and became the Delancey Street Museum and an early site for 'Happenings', which Milder participated in. [9] He showed his first major series called "Subway Runners" in 1964 at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York City.
During the 1970s, Milder co-founded a collective group called Rhino Horn with Peter Passuntino, Peter Dean, Benny Andrews, Nicholas Sperakis, Michael Fauerbach, Ken Bowman, Leonel Gongora, and Bill Barrell. [10] Rhino Horn continued a style promoting politically and socially driven American Figurative Expressionism, when many people in the art world and society were focused on Pop Art and Minimalism. [11]
Milder's art has been the subject of two retrospectives in Brazil in 2007 at the National Museum Brasilia and, in 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art, in Rio de Janeiro. In Summer of 2009 he was in Brazil where at this time he painted a commissioned mural alongside Brazilian street artist, Eduardo Kobra in São Paulo. [12] [3]
Jay Milder's paintings have undergone various stylistic changes since the 1950s. The most common and important consistency has been his organic form of Expressionism. Biblical references have always played an important role in Milder's work. From Milder's perspective, the Kabbalah underlies all aspects of reality including not only the way a painting is conceived and executed, but also its impact on the visual environment around us. [8] In a 1976 article in Arts magazine titled, “Jay Milder: Painter of Discovery, Resolution and Rediscovery,” historian George Nelson Preston contextualized Milder's artistic process as “trance-like,” and labeled him “an important painter's painter and … an historian's painter.” [13]
Milder's first notable series of paintings are his "Subway Runners," "Subway Faces," and "Subway People," which are stylized representations of human figures within an environment that references the New York City subway system. Milder painted in these figures in such a heavy impasto that they often protrude out off of the canvas. While the "Subway Faces" and "Subway People" depict clusters of figures alluding to riders packed into subway cars, the "Subway Runners" feature large solitary forms that stretch across the canvas as if they were running to catch a train. Milder began a group of small paintings, entitled “Messiah Series”, in the late 1960s. These were fully expressionistic earth toned pictures, and he completed around 250 paintings in the series, based on biblical themes from the Old Testament. When 40 of these paintings were shown in a traveling exhibition premiering at the Richard Green Gallery in New York City, in 1987, art critic Donald Kuspit wrote in Artforum Magazine: “after Nolde's biblical pictures, these are the best and most integral group of biblical pictures in the 20th century.” [14]
From the 1970s through the 2000s, much of Milder's artworks have been centered around interpretations of the Kabbalah, including Jewish numerology. [11]
Jay Milder's work is in the permanent collection of galleries and museums throughout the world, including The Tel-Aviv Museum of Art Archived 2013-09-10 at the Wayback Machine in Tel-Aviv, Israel, The Provincetown Art Association and Museum [15] in Provincetown, Massachusetts, The Chrysler Museum of Art [16] in Norfolk, Virginia, The RISD Museum in Providence, Rhode Island, [17] and the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio.
Milder received the Mexican Government's Honor Award for artists in 1957, a Rainbow Arts Foundation Award at Exhibition Museum, Guadalajara, Mexico. in 1965, he was honored as Professor Emeritus at City College of New York in 1991, and in 1999 he was the Cultural Exchange representative between The United States and Brazil at the Belles Artes Museum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Franz Kline was an American painter. He is associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s and 1950s. Kline, along with other action painters like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, John Ferren, and Lee Krasner, as well as local poets, dancers, and musicians came to be known as the informal group, the New York School. Although he explored the same innovations to painting as the other artists in this group, Kline's work is distinct in itself and has been revered since the 1950s.
Lasar Segall was a Lithuanian Jewish and Brazilian painter, engraver and sculptor. Segall's work is derived from impressionism, expressionism and modernism. His most significant themes were depictions of human suffering, war, persecution and prostitution.
Albert Kotin belonged to the early generation of New York School Abstract Expressionist artists whose artistic innovation by the 1950s had been recognized across the Atlantic, including in Paris. The New York School Abstract Expressionism, represented by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and others became a leading art movement of the post-World War II era.
Kimathi Donkor is a London-based contemporary British artist whose paintings are known for their exploration of global, black histories. His work is exhibited and collected by international museums, galleries and biennials including London's National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum, the Diaspora Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennial, the 29th São Paulo Art Biennial and the 15th Sharjah Biennial. He is of Ghanaian, Anglo-Jewish and Jamaican family heritage, and his figurative paintings depict "African diasporic bodies and souls as sites of heroism and martydom, empowerment and fragility...myth and matter".
Jan Müller was a New York-based figurative expressionist artist of the 1950s. According to art critic Carter Ratcliff, "His paintings usually erect a visual architecture sturdy enough to support an array of standing, riding, levitating figures. Gravity is absent, banished by an indifference to ordinary experience." According to the poet John Ashbery, Müller "brings a medieval sensibility to neo-Expressionist paintings."
American Figurative Expressionism is a 20th-century visual art style or movement that first took hold in Boston, and later spread throughout the United States. Critics dating back to the origins of Expressionism have often found it hard to define. One description, however, classifies it as a Humanist philosophy, since it is human-centered and rationalist. Its formal approach to the handling of paint and space is often considered a defining feature, too, as is its radical, rather than reactionary, commitment to the figure.
João de Brito is a Portuguese-American artist who has lived in Northern California since 1978, yet he travels extensively throughout California, the U.S. and Europe to paint in oils en plein air and from memory. From age 6, he has observed and studied art to acquire a passion for expressing himself using impressionist/figurative views on canvas.
Lester Johnson was an American artist and educator. Johnson was a member of the Second Generation of the New York School during the late 1950s. The subject of much of his work is the human figure. His style is considered by critics and art historians to be in the figurative expressionist mode.
Walter Kuhlman (1918–2009) was a 20th-century American painter and printmaker. In the late 1940s and 1950s, he was a core member of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism. He later worked in a representational style related to American Figurative Expressionism.
City Gallery was an art gallery in New York City that exhibited the work of contemporary artists in a loft space that was run collectively by a group of young avant-garde artists.
Robert Goodnough was an American abstract expressionist painter. A veteran of World War II, Goodnough was one of the last of the original generation of the New York School;, even though he began exhibiting his work in galleries in New York City in the early 1950s. Robert Goodnough was among the 24 artists from the total of 256 participants who were included in the famous 9th Street Art Exhibition, (1951) and in all the following New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals from 1953 to 1957. These Annuals were important because the participants were chosen by the artists themselves. Early in his career starting in 1950 he showed his paintings at the Wittenborn Gallery, NYC. He had shown at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York City from 1952 to 1970 and again from 1984 to 1986. In 1960 and 1961 he had solo exhibitions at The Art Institute of Chicago. A veteran of scores of solo exhibitions and hundreds of group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, Goodnough also had solo exhibitions in 1969 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. A major work by Goodnough is included in The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza Art Collection in Albany, NY. In later years his paintings were also associated with the Color Field movement.
Nanno Freerk de Groot was a Dutch artist, he was self-taught and active in New York City. He belonged to the group of New York School Abstract expressionist artists of the 1950s. He wrote:
"In moments of clarity of thought I can sustain the idea that everything on earth is nature, including that which springs forth from a man's mind, and hand. A Franz Kline is nature as much as a zinnia."
Robert Beauchamp was an American figurative painter and arts educator. Beauchamp's paintings and drawings are known for depicting dramatic creatures and figures with expressionistic colors. His work was described in the New York Times as being "both frightening and amusing". He was a Guggenheim Fellow and a student of Hans Hofmann.
Louis Van Lint was a Belgian painter, major figure of the Belgian post-war abstraction.
Stephen Greene was an American artist known for his abstract paintings and in the 1940s his social realist figure paintings.
George McNeil was an American abstract expressionist painter.
Marcia Grostein Marcia Grostein is a Brazilian-American artist known for using various mediums across public art, sculpture, painting, video art, photography, and portable wearable art/jewelry. She was the first contemporary Brazilian artist to be acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 20th Century Collection by the curator Lowery Sims.
April Kingsley was an American art critic and curator known for her support of abstract expressionism in New York City, her work on the catalogue raisonné of Franz Kline, and her book about the rise of abstract expressionism, The Turning Point. In addition to her work as an art critic, art historian, and author, Kingsley was an educator and a curator especially of figurative- and abstract-expressionist work.
Grupo Ruptura was created by a collection of artists who sought to advance modern art in Brazil in the 1950s. Together, they held an exhibition entitled Ruptura at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art in 1952. The group embraced concrete art as a break from traditional naturalistic painting popular in Brazil at the time. Grupo Ruptura's works are often characterized by strong geometric shapes and bold colors.
Tikashi Fukushima was a Japanese-Brazilian painter and printmaker. Considered one of the most important abstractionists in Brazil, Fukushima also produced several works in the field of figurativism throughout his career. The artist has received various positive reviews from numerous important art critics for both his abstractionist and figurative productions. Fukushima belongs to the pre-war immigrant generation, composed of common immigrants who, after several changes in their lives, awakened to the arts. His master was Tadashi Kaminagai, whom Fukushima saw as a mentor, but who had a different style of painting than the one he later developed. Tikashi's works have been presented in national and international exhibitions.
