Jay Wadley is an American composer and music producer based in New York City, renowned for his work in film, television, and contemporary classical music. He is a two-time winner of the Charles Ives Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters [1] and was nominated twice at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards under the best original score category in 2020 and 2021.

Early life and education

Wadley was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. During his senior year of high school, he composed his first choir piece for 60 classmates to perform at a school talent show. After finishing high school in 2001 as an Edmond Memorial graduate, he studied music composition at Oklahoma City University under composer Edward Knight. After completing his undergraduate degree, Wadley pursued a Master's degree in Music Composition at the Yale School of Music studying under Aaron Jay Kernis, Martin Bresnick and Ezra Laderman. During his time at Yale, he also worked as an assistant manager at the Yale Center for Studies in Music Technology, taught undergraduate composition and contributed to various projects, including orchestral works with the Yale Philharmonia. Career

Film and television

Wadley is best known for composing the score for the 2020 film I'm Thinking of Ending Things , directed by Oscar-winning writer and director Charlie Kaufman. The film, an adaptation of Iain Reid’s novel, received critical acclaim, and Wadley’s score was particularly praised for its haunting and atmospheric quality. [3] Wadley incorporated orchestral textures and dissonant harmonies to reflect the film’s psychological tension, drawing inspiration from avant-garde composers and classic Hollywood scores. [4] In addition to composing the score, Wadley composed an original ballet for the film's climactic sequence, as well as a 1950s-style jingle and adaptations of songs from the musical Oklahoma!. [5] [6]

He also composed the score for the period drama series Franklin , which presented the challenge of creating a sound that matched the show's historical setting. [7] For Franklin, Wadley combined period-accurate instrumentation with contemporary harmonic structures to evoke the era’s historical depth while maintaining a modern sensibility. [8]

In 2021, Wadley scored the film Swan Song , where his music was noted for its emotional depth and complementing the film's narrative. [9] For Swan Song, Wadley utilized minimalistic piano motifs and ambient soundscapes to underscore the film’s themes of memory and identity. [10] [11] [12]

In addition to his film and television work, Wadley has been involved in contemporary classical compositions and live performances. He has collaborated with various orchestras, ensembles, and artists on projects that explore new sonic landscapes. [13]

Awards and recognition

Wadley's work has garnered industry recognition, including being featured twice in IndieWire's "10 Best Scores of the Year" lists. [14] His score for Indignation was included in the 2016 list, [15] while his work on Driveways and I'm Thinking of Ending Things earned him a spot on the 2020 list. <i>Im Thinking of Ending Things</i> 2020 film by Charlie Kaufman

I'm Thinking of Ending Things is a 2020 American surrealist psychological thriller film written and directed by Charlie Kaufman. It is an adaptation of the 2016 novel of the same name by Iain Reid. The plot follows a young woman who goes on a trip with her boyfriend to meet his parents. Throughout the film, the main narrative is intercut with footage of a school janitor going to work, with both stories intersecting by the third act.

Wilbert Roget II is an American composer known for his work on video game music, particularly Mortal Kombat 11 (2019), Call of Duty: WWII (2017), Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, (2014) and Helldivers 2 (2024). His scores have won multiple awards and nominations from the Game Audio Network Guild and the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.

The music for the 2019 film Jojo Rabbit, was written, composed, produced, conducted, orchestrated and supervised by Michael Giacchino. Regarding the score, Giacchino explained, "I didn’t want the music to be funny. The bulk of the movie has this huge heart, especially in the character of Jojo himself, and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t adding to the zaniness. I wanted to underline the emotional component. For me, it’s a devastating story but in the end an uplifting one. With everything we’re going through now, it felt like something important to be a part of." Around 45 minutes of the score was conducted and recorded by Giacchino at the Abbey Road Studios in London with a 35-piece orchestra. The film also features a soundtrack album that had songs incorporated from various artists. The soundtrack and score is influenced of contemporary music originated in West Germany, suiting with the theme and mood of the film.
