Jaylen Terelle Sims (born December 11, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Greensboro Swarm of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for the UNC Wilmington Seahawks.

High school career

Sims is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended United Faith Christian Academy. [1] He was recruited by UNC Wilmington Seahawks assistant coach Doug Esleeck who had first started recruiting Sims as an assistant for the Mercer Bears. [1] Sims' relationship with Esleeck was a major factor in his commitment to the Seahawks. [1]

College career

Sims led the Seahawks in scoring with 17.8 points per game as a junior in the 2020–21 season. [2] He scored a career-high 29 points in a game against the Troy Trojans on November 28, 2020. [3]

Sims led the Seahawks in points (16.4), rebounds (5.5) and assists (2.4) per game during his senior season in 2021–22. [4] He was selected to the first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). [4] The Seahawks won the 2022 College Basketball Invitational and Sims was named as most outstanding player of the tournament. [5]

Sims later declared for the NBA draft. [6]

Professional career

Greensboro Swarm (2022–present)

After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft, Sims joined the Toronto Raptors for the 2022 NBA Summer League [4] and on September 12, 2022, Sims signed with the Charlotte Hornets, his hometown team. [7] [8] He appeared in one preseason game before he was waived on October 14 [9] and on November 4, he was named to the opening night roster for the Greensboro Swarm. [10]

In July 2023, Sims re-joined the Hornets for the 2023 NBA Summer League [11] and on September 5, he signed with them. [12] However, he was waived on September 29 [13] and re-joined the Swarm on October 29. [14]

On September 28, 2024, Sims signed with the Hornets, but was waived the same day. [15] On October 27, he rejoined the Swarm. [16]

The 2022–23 Charlotte Hornets season was the 33rd season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA). On April 22, 2022, the Charlotte Hornets fired head coach James Borrego after four years with the team with no playoff appearances. The Hornets failed to improve on their 43–39 record the previous season, with their 40th loss coming on February 5, to Orlando. Additionally, after the Sacramento Kings clinched a playoff spot on March 29, 2023, the Hornets currently hold the distinction for having the longest playoff drought in the NBA with 7 seasons, last clinching in 2016. This later became the final season of Michael Jordan being the majority owner of the Hornets, since he'd later become a minority owner of the team after selling his majority ownership to Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall in the month of August 2023.
