The Jeep Treo was an electric concept car produced by Chrysler under their Jeep brand in the early twenty first century. Launched at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, it was envisaged for production in 2008, but the single prototype remained a one-off. Designed for the Asian young urban driver, the car was fitted with three seats and had the provision to carry mountain bikes as an integral part of the near-teardrop shaped design. Although the prototype was designed to be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, in its production form the car was to be given hybrid petrol-electric drive.

Design

Designed by the Chrysler Advanced Product Design Center in California by a team led by designer Freeman Thomas, the Jeep Treo was envisaged as "the ultimate student car" to attract young urban drivers. [1] The car was designed to appeal to a younger audience than others in the Jeep range, it being expected that they would then move onto the more traditional models as they aged. [2] It had a wheelbase of 2,450 mm (96.5 in) and the body was 3,235 mm (127.4 in) long, 1,680 mm (66.1 in) wide and 1,585 mm (62.4 in) high. It weighed 816 kg (1,799 lb). [3] Power was provided by two electric motors, one mounted on each axle, to give four-wheel drive, driven by a hydrogen fuel cell mounted under the floor, to offer a zero-emissions vehicle. [1]

The design was inspired by anime concepts. [3] The exterior was in the shape of a near-teardrop with an open grill at the front. The interior was designed to be light and airy with a large windshield and glass roof extending over the rear cargo space. The cabin had two seats forward with a single foldable seat behind, and the ability to carry two mountain bikes at the back. [2] The bike mountings were integral to the design to emphasise that the car was envisioned for use by the more active city-dweller. [4] The car was designed to use drive by wire to eliminate the need for heavy and bulky mechanical components, while the driver's controls were modular so that the car could be easily switched from left to right hand drive. Production

The Jeep Trio was produced to appeal to the young urban market in Asia and was unveiled at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show. [5] [6] The design was promoted as a vision of urban driving “a decade or more” in the future. [1] The concept car was well received by motor journalists and a production vehicle was planned powered by a petrol/electric hybrid drivetrain to be launched by 2008. [7] However, the vehicle remained a one-off build. [5]

Eco-Runner Team Delft is a Delft University of Technology student team, aiming to promote a sustainable future by building the world's most efficient hydrogen-powered car. At the end of the year, the team participates in the Shell Eco-marathon competition in order to assess the efficiency of the vehicle. Eco-Runner Team Delft won the competition in 2015 and 2022. In the competition there are two vehicle classes: Prototype and UrbanConcept. For years Eco-Runner Team Delft participated in the Shell Eco-marathon Prototype class competition where the goal is to cover a certain distance with the least amount of hydrogen. In the year 2019–2020, the team has decided to compete in a different competition; the Urban Concept class. This challenge offers the team the opportunity to design and build an efficient hydrogen-powered vehicle that is closer in appearance to modern city cars.

The Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid or Mazda5 Hydrogen RE Hybrid was a hydrogen powered hybrid car produced by Mazda. Later models were also called the Mazda Hydrogen RE Plug in Hybrid. Toyota concept vehicles are transportation devices manufactured or designed by automobile company Toyota from 2000 to 2009. As their name suggests, these vehicles were concepts, and, as such, many were never released to dealerships. Many were developed in conjunction with other corporations such as Sony or Subaru.

The Hyundai Vision FK is a concept car that uses a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with both a large traction battery and a hydrogen fuel cell; the concept vehicle was developed by Hyundai and Rimac Automobili. The mid-motor, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe was unveiled at the Hydrogen Wave Forum in September 2021, an event organized by Hyundai to outline its plans to popularize hydrogen vehicles by 2040 for "Everyone, Everything and Everywhere". Power is delivered through two electric traction motors, both on the rear axle. The Vision FK can be plugged in to recharge its traction battery, which has more than 60 kW-hr of energy storage capacity, and the onboard fuel cell affords it a range greater than 600 km (370 mi).
