Jeff Martin is an American operatic tenor who made a career based in Germany, singing at international opera houses and concert halls. Focused on character roles, he has appeared as Mime in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen and Herod in Salome by Richard Strauss, and appeared in several world premieres.

Career

Martin studied voice at Westminster Choir College and Cincinnati University. [1] [2]

Based in Germany, Martin appeared as Herod in Salome by Richard Strauss at the Opernhaus Dortmund in 2007. A reviewer noted his precise and sharp character tenor. [3] He performed the role of Pedrillo in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Staatstheater Nürnberg in 2008, conducted by Christof Prick. [4] He appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in 2011 as the Astrologer in The Golden Cockerel , conducted by Vassily Sinaisky and directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, [1] in a production broadcast in Europe. [5] In 2012, he performed there as Valzacchi in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, directed by Stephen Lawless. [1] He appeared as Reb Alter in the German premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's Wir gratulieren! in a concert version for chamber orchestra at the Konzerthaus Berlin in 2012. [6] He took part in several world premieres, as the Inquisitor in Francesco Filidei's Giordano Bruno in Paris, as Bertolt Brecht in Michel Tabachnik's Benjamin, dernière nuit at the Opéra de Lyon and in Nana Forte's Paradies oder nach Eden at the Vorarlberger Landestheater in Bregenz. He appeared as Mime in Wagner's Das Rheingold and Siegfried in the project Der Ring in Minden , completed in 2019. [7] He has appeared at opera houses including the Bavarian State Opera, Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Hamburgische Staatsoper, Oper Köln, Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg and Nationaltheater Mannheim. In concert, he performed as the Evangelist in Bach's St Matthew Passion , among others. [1] [2]

Franz Mazura Austrian opera singer and actor (1924–2020)

Franz Mazura was an Austrian bass-baritone opera singer and actor. He performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1971 for 25 years and at the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years. He was made a Kammersänger in 1980 and an Honorary Member of the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 1990. He most often played villains and strange characters, with signature roles including Klingsor in Wagner's Parsifal. Mazura took part in world premieres, such as the double role of Dr. Schön and Jack the Ripper in the world premiere of the completed version of Alban Berg's Lulu at the Paris Opera in 1979, and as Abraham in Giorgio Battistelli's Lot in 2017. Two of his recordings received Grammy Awards. His voice was described as with dark timbre, powerful and like granite, with perfect diction. His acting ability was described as "well-supplied with vivid imaginative touches, whether deployed in comic roles or characters of inexorable malevolence. Mazura could achieve more impact with a lifted eyebrow or a belligerently thrust chin than many artists could with a ten-minute monologue." He had a long career, appearing at the Staatsoper Berlin the night before his 95th birthday.

For years a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he was chosen as Singer of the Year in 2011 after creating the leading role in Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival.
