Jefferson, Camden County, Georgia

Last updated

Jefferson is an unincorporated community on the Satilla River in Camden County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. [1] [2]

History

An old variant name is "Jeffersonton". [1] Jefferson was platted in 1800 and once served as Camden County's county seat. [3] It was chosen as the county seat because the rice planters lived nearby. The county courthouse was a two-story log building with the courtroom on the first floor and a grand jury room on the second floor. The county seat was moved back to St. Marys after while because Jeffersonton was thought to be malarial. [4]
