In 1854, Jefferson Township was established in Greene County, Iowa. [4] It was one of three townships in Greene County at the time, along with Kendrick and Washington townships, and it encompassed the middle half of the county. [5] It remained this way until it was split into multiple smaller townships, with the name Jefferson Township being given to the northwest corner of the survey township on which the town of Jefferson stood. The other three-quarters of a survey township was named Grant Township. [6]
Jefferson Township is one of four townships in Greene County that is not a Survey Township, along with Grant Township, Junction Township, and Washington Township. [7] It is now defined by the city limits of the town by the same name.
Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,771. The county seat is Jefferson. The county is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene.

The tower is named for Floyd Mahanay, a businessman, philanthropist, and former resident. Jefferson is bisected east to west by the old Lincoln Highway. A new U.S. Route 30 is located approximately one mile to the north.
