Jennifer Bernet (born August 21,1962) is an American social worker and Democratic politician who was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. First elected in 2006,she failed to retake the seat in 2008 and 2010. In 2011,when Bob Mead resigned to be chief of staff to Speaker Bill O'Brien,Bernet handily won a special election to take his place. [1] Following redistricting in 2012,she again lost reelection and ran in 2014 for a seat on the Executive Council of New Hampshire. [2] She returned to the House in 2018 and served until 2020.
The Executive Council of the State of New Hampshire is the executive body of the U.S. state of New Hampshire. The Executive Council advises the Governor on all matters and provides a check on the governor's power. While the governor retains the right to veto legislation passed by the New Hampshire General Court,and commands the New Hampshire National Guard,the council has veto power over pardons,contracts with a value greater than $10,000,and nominations. The Executive Council Chambers have been located in the New Hampshire State House since the chambers were added to the capitol in 1909.
In 2004,Democrats made large gains in Concord,winning the governorship,adding 30 seats in the House,two seats in the Senate,winning an Executive Council seat in District 5 for the first time since the 1960s,one of many races won by Democrats for the first time in decades.

Incumbent Republican Governor Chris Sununu was re-elected to a third two-year term in office,defeating his opponent Dan Feltes,the Majority Leader of the Senate. Nine governors ran for re-election in this cycle and all nine were re-elected. Sununu's win marked the first time since 1986 that a Republican was elected to a third term as governor,in which his father,John H. Sununu was reelected for his third and final term. The elder Sununu chose not to seek reelection in 1988,instead becoming George H. W. Bush's chief of staff in 1989.
