Jennifer Vanderpool is an American artist living and working in Los Angeles. [1] In her work "there is a chipper cynicism to the retro character of the figures, buildings, fashions, and patterns, so that there is certainly a sense of tradition, yet there is also a sense of transference and surrealism." [2]
In 2007, the Statens Kunstfond: Danish Arts Council awarded Vanderpool an artist grant for her exhibition Once Upon a Tart at RACA in Copenhagen, Denmark. Two years prior the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts awarded funding for Vanderpool's site specific installation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. [3] [4]
Vanderpool created a series of molds as part of an installation for Virserums Konsthall titled Blomster in Virserum, Sweden in 2009; "Vanderpool uses the sculptural installation as a site where gender, sex, and food overlap in a curious play between aversion and craving, over-indulgence and restraint." [5] [6]
In 2010, the Kulturrådet: Swedish Arts Council awarded Vanderpool's exhibition Sagoberättelser at Designarkivet, Nybro, Sweden an International Cultural Grant, while Malmö Stad awarded her a cultural grant for her exhibition förgyllda trädgårda. That same year the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, City of Los Angeles and Durfee Foundation awarded Vanderpool a grant for exhibitions that took place in Los Angeles and Bogotá, Colombia. Her 2011 exhibition Wanton at the Galería Sextante [8] in Bogotá, Colombia featured a variety of intricately designed sculptural and photographic works where "her ultra-baroque sensibility offers viewers a surfeit of visual and emotional pleasures, nothing is squandered." [9] [10]
Vanderpool created an installation in 2012 for the Butler Institute of American Art titled Hometown Story: Youngstown Steel Kitchens. The exhibition incorporated film and advertisements which addressed nostalgia, domesticity and gender roles. [11]
In 2013, Vanderpool exhibited Family Stories/Сімейні Оповідання at Faina Gallery | Dmitry Futerman Gallery in conjunction with Kroshytskyi Art Museum, in Sevastopol, Crimea, Ukraine. [12]
Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art included Vanderpool on their Best Artists List of 2013. [13]
In 2014, she exhibited "Super Natural" at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Moscow, Russia. The exhibition included 26 digital postcards and two multichannel video works which "invite each viewer to investigate their beliefs about places and the people in them, using beauty as a guise to expose the facts behind the facade." Vanderpool has served as a panelist for Plan B [16] at the 24th International Sculpture Conference: Sculpture, Culture, & Community in New Orleans and for a symposium, Collecting Geographies: Global Programming and Museums of Modern Art, [17] in 2014 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
In 2016, Vanderpool curated an exhibition titled "Imaginary Selves" at the Harris Gallery at University of La Verne in La Verne, California. [18] The exhibition included works from Lisa Jevbratt, Jane Callister, Việt Lê, Brian McArthur, Catalina Jaramillo Quijano, and James Van Arsdale which explored notions of self through multiple modalities including race, genealogy, and music.
Pitzer College Art Galleries in Claremont, California received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 2016 to exhibit A Moderate Proposal co-curated by Pitzer College Art Galleries Director/Curator Ciara Ennis and artist Jennifer Vanderpool. [19]
Vanderpool exhibited Piter as a part of the Wende Museum and Cold War Archive's Artistic Interpretations of the Cold War in Culver City, California beginning in April 2016 alongside artists Farrah Karapetian, Richtje Reinsma and Daphne Rosenthal. Piter included 4 large-scale digital prints, 5 posters hung salon style with works from the Wende Museum's collection, a projected video and an interview with a Los Angeles resident who moved to the US after living in Soviet Union. Vanderpool co-curated with Việt Lê Love in a Time of War at SF Camerawork in San Francisco, California which "demonstrates as love and war police bodies, there’s code-breaking and brinksmanship. The show is abound with subtle insertions and unknown histories, as well as humor and beauty." [21]
She exhibited 5 videos as a part of the M.A.R.S. (Music & Arts ReSound) Festival in Los Angeles, California during April 2017. [22]
Vanderpool exhibited a video from Super Natural, 2014–17 in Twenty/20, a month long film exhibition held by Edward Cella Art + Architecture in Los Angeles, California, each day featured a different artist's video playing on loop from the time the gallery opened to the time it closed. [23]
She exhibited "Flores para el Trueque" curated by No Lugar: Arte Contemporáneo exhibited at La Huerta y La Maquina in Quito, Ecuador in May 2017 consisting of interviews with laborers involved in the floriculture industry in California and Ecuador alongside a series of 15 prints.
Vanderpool exhibited "Garment Girl", organized by Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, at Heritage Space, Hanoi, Vietnam featuring interviews with garment workers stories told by Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles and academics' viewpoints on labor rights in the garment industry. The interviews were exhibited with a 3 part mural and a series of 6 large prints. "Remake" workshops, organized with artist and fashion designer Hồng Phạm, were also held prior to the opening of the exhibition to provide working poor women in Hà Nội a space to make new garments from recycled clothing.
Vanderpool was awarded an ArtSTART grant from The Ohio Arts Council for her most recent exhibition, "Untold Stories," which featured a series of 15 large-scale prints, vintage photographs from Opie Evans and the Goodyear archive, and poetic documentaries. The show opened up at the Tyler History Center in Youngstown, Ohio then travelled to Emily Davis Gallery at the University of Akron.
She has been a visiting artist at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, Ölands Konstskola in Öland, Sweden, the University of Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Vanderpool has also been an artist in residence through the Hothouse 2015 program in the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at the University of California, Los Angeles in Los Angeles. Vanderpool has been a lecturer at the University of California, Santa Barbara; University of California, Los Angeles; Otis College of Art and Design and the Mount. St Mary's University, Los Angeles.[ citation needed ]
Vanderpool holds an Independent, Interdisciplinary Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), [26] in the fields of Film and Media Studies, Comparative Literature and Interdisciplinary Humanities which was chaired by Dr. Colin Gardner and Dick Hebdige. She also holds an MFA in Spatial Studies and Critical Theory from UCSB, where she was a UC Regents Fellow. Vanderpool's other degrees include an MA in Modern Art and Architecture from Emory University, an MA in Community Art Intervention from Ohio State University, and a BA in history from Wittenberg University. Bastiaan Johan Christiaan "Bas Jan" Ader was a Dutch conceptual and performance artist, and photographer. His work was in many instances presented as photographs and film of his performances. He made performative installations, including Please Don't Leave Me (1969).

Jacobo Borges is a contemporary, neo-figurative Venezuelan artist. His curiosity for exploring different mediums made him a painter, drawer, film director, stage designer and plastic artist. Known for his ever-evolving style, there is one constant principle that unites his work: "the search for the creation of space somewhere between dreams and reality where everything has happened, happens, and may happen." His theoretical approach and unique, innovative technique has won him acclaim all over the world. He has had solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Britain and the United States. Today, he is considered one of the most accomplished artist of Latin America. His oeuvre includes a rich body of paintings, a film directed in 1969, and a book The Great Mountain and Its Era, published in 1979. In 1982, a biography by Dore Ashton, called Jacobo Borges, was published in English and Spanish.
Alexandra Grant is an American visual artist who examines language and written texts through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and other media. She uses language and exchanges with writers as a source for much of that work. Grant examines the process of writing and ideas based in linguistic theory as it connects to art and creates visual images inspired by text and collaborative group installations based on that process. She is based in Los Angeles.
Gilah Yelin Hirsch is a multidisciplinary artist who works as a painter, writer, curator, and filmmaker. Her work explores the connections between science, art, and spirituality. She has been a leader in the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM). Hirsch was a founding member of one of the earliest women art organizations, the Los Angeles Council of Women in the Arts (LACWA) and was active in the feminist art movement in Southern California. She was a professor of art at California State University, Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles since 1973 and became Professor Emerita in 2020. Presently, Hirsch continues painting, writing, theorizing, and filmmaking, and is often invited to present her work in conferences and webinars world-wide.
IGNACIO ORTIZ CEDEÑO
Gustavo Arias Murueta was a Mexican painter, sculptor and poet, a member of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana best known for his work in drawing, graphic arts and oil painting. He originally studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México where he met artists such as Rufino Tamayo, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco. In the 1950s, he began to produce artworks, with his first exhibition in 1961. From then until his death he had a career as an artist with individual and collective exhibitions in both Mexico and abroad. While his work had been heavily influenced by Orozco, he was considered part of the Generación de la Ruptura movement.
Carlos Eduardo Maturana Piña, better known by his artistic pseudonym Bororo, is Chilean artist born in Santiago, Chile, on November 10, 1953. Along with Samy Benmayor, Omar Gatica, Matías Pinto D'Aguiar and Ismael Frigerio among others, he formed part of Chilean art’s 80s Generation. Bororo was his childhood nickname.
Cassils is a visual and performance artist, body builder, and personal trainer from Montreal, Quebec, Canada now based in Los Angeles, California, United States. Their work uses the body in a sculptural fashion, integrating feminism, body art, and gay male aesthetics. Cassils is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Creative Capital Grant, a United States Artists Fellowship, a California Community Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship (2012), several Canada Council for the Arts grants, and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship. Cassils is gender non-conforming, transmasculine, and goes by singular they pronouns.
Charles Gaines is an American visual artist, whose work interrogates the discourse of aesthetics, politics, and philosophy. Taking the form of drawings, photographic series and video installations, the work consistently involves the use of systems, predominantly in the form of the grid, often in combination with photography. His work is rooted in conceptual art – in dialogue with artists such as Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner and Mel Bochner – and Gaines is committed to its tenets of engaging cognition and language. As one of the only African-American conceptual artists working in the 1970s, a time when political expressionism was a prevailing concern among African-American artists, Gaines was an outlier in his pursuit of abstraction and non-didactic approach to race and politics. There is a strong musical thread running through much of Gaines' work, evident in his repeated use of musical scores as well in his engagement with the idea of indeterminacy, as similar to John Cage and Sol LeWitt. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
Nancy Youdelman is a mixed media sculptor who lives and works in Clovis, California. She also taught art at California State University, Fresno from 1999 until her retirement in 2013. "Since the early 1970s Youdelman has been transforming clothing into sculpture, combining women's and girl's dresses, hats, gloves, shoes, and undergarments with a variety of organic materials and common household objects.
Jennifer Pastor is an American sculptor and Professor of Visual Arts at the University of California Irvine. Pastor examines issues of space encompassing structure, body and object orientations, imaginary forms, narrative and progressions of sequence.
Farrah Karapetian is an American visual artist. She works primarily in cameraless photography, incorporating multiple mediums in her process including sculpture, theatre, drawing, creative nonfiction, and social practice. She is especially known for her work that "marries two traditions in photography — that of the staged picture and of the image made without a camera." Recurrent concerns include the agency of the individual versus that of authority and the role of the body in determining that agency.
Nancy Genn is an American artist living and working in Berkeley, California known for works in a variety of media, including paintings, bronze sculpture, printmaking, and handmade paper rooted in the Japanese washi paper making tradition. Her work explores geometric abstraction, non-objective form, and calligraphic mark making, and features light, landscape, water, and architecture motifs. She is influenced by her extensive travels, and Asian craft, aesthetics and spiritual traditions.
Suzi Ferrer (born Susan Nudelman, also known as Sasha Ferrer, was a visual artist based in San Juan, Puerto Rico from the mid-1960s to 1975. She is known for her transgressive, irreverent, avant-garde, art brut and feminist work.
Esteban Ramón Pérez is an American artist who produces multi-media paintings and sculptures. His sociopolitical artwork often emphasizes subjective memory, spirituality, and fragmented history. Pérez earned a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2017 and an MFA in painting and printmaking from the Yale School of Art, New Haven, Connecticut, in 2019. Pérez's work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions, including shows at Artspace, New Haven, Connecticut; Eastern Connecticut State University Art Gallery, Windham, Connecticut; Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn; James Cohan Gallery, New York; Gamma Galería, Guadalajara, Mexico; Calderón, New York; the Arlington Arts Center, Virginia; Charles Moffett, New York; and Lehmann Maupin, New York. Solo exhibitions include Staniar Gallery, Lexington, Virginia. Pérez was selected for the NXTHVN Fellowship Program and is a 2022 recipient of the Artadia Award.
