Jerelle Kraus is an American art director, artist, and writer.
Kraus was born in Southern California to Joyce Kraus and Dr. Otto Kraus. Ms. Kraus taught at the Edison School, Berkeley, and Mr. Kraus was an emeritus professor of philosophy at University of California Los Angeles. [1] Jerelle attended Pomona College, was a sophomore exchange student at Swarthmore College, received a certificate from École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a BA and an MA in art from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a Fulbright scholar in Munich. While living in San Francisco, Kraus was the art director of Ramparts Magazine and the founding creative director of Francis Ford Coppola's City Magazine. [2]
In 1977, Kraus began her tenure at The New York Times . She was the first art director of the Living section. She began at the op-ed section in 1979. [2] At Op-Ed, Kraus commissioned many illustrations from well-known artists, including Ralph Steadman, Roland Topor, Maurice Sendak. Kraus spent 30 years at The New York Times, 13 of them at op-ed.
In addition to her work as an art director, Kraus has been published as a freelance writer. In 1978, she published Museum Mammoth Is a Metamporph on the cover of the New York Times Metropolitan section. The article, "," featured Gerry Lynas, a New York sculptor, building two large-scale ice sculptures—one of a Wooly Mammoth and one of a Stegosaurus—in front of the American Museum of Natural History.
In 1998, Kraus published several pieces about the death of Roland Topor, graphic artist, novelist, and Kraus' friend. The Endpaper of the New York Times Magazine published, "," a tribute to Topor following his death. Her short piece, "Many Muses," was published in The New Yorker commissioned by Tina Brown.
In 2001, she wrote an article entitled "Charmed by Morocco in a Wink," that appeared in the travel section of the New York Times.
In 2003, she subbed for William Safire's New York Times column, "On Language." The piece, headlined, "Fancifying," is about Americans' desire to use highbrow language and how this often results in incorrect usage.
In 2011, Kraus published two book reviews in USA Today . The first was a review of Laurence Bergreen's book Columbus: the Four Voyages. The second, a review of Tolstoy: A Russian Life by Rosamund Bartlett, was published as one of four reviews of biographies of major novelists.
Kraus' book All the Art That's Fit to Print (And Some that Wasn't): Inside the New York Times Op-Ed Page was published by Columbia University Press in 2009. It tells the history of Op-Ed, the revolutionary phenomenon that began at The New York Times in 1970. Though it focuses on the art of Op-Ed, it remains the only book about Op-Ed. In addition to being a large format coffee-table book, it is used as a text book for journalism and illustration courses at the university level. [3] [4]

Kraus lives in New York City where she works as a freelance writer and teaches as an adjunct professor at Fordham University. [7] She is the ex-wife of Argentine artist, Horacio Cardo, who died on October 22, 2018, of complications caused by a stroke. [8]

Robert Kraus was an American children's author illustrator, cartoonist and publisher. His successful career began early at the New Yorker Magazine, producing over hundreds of cartoons and nearly two dozen covers for the magazine over 15 years. Afterwards, he pivoted his career to children's literature, writing and illustrating over 100 children’s books and publishing even more as the founder of publishing house Windmill Books. His body of work is best remembered for depicting animal heroes who always try their best and never give up, which were ideals important to him at an early age.

Jon Allan Christensen is an American freelance journalist with a focus of writing about California, from his Venice home in coastal Los Angeles County. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, where he periodically teaches a class, Environmental journalism, for undergraduate Environmental Science majors at UCLA. In January 2020 he authored an op-ed opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times about bulldozing the Ballona Wetlands, which would harm endangered native wildlife and rare native wildflowers, as well as removing living soil.
David Suter is an American artist known for his many years producing editorial illustrations for clients such as The Washington Post, Time, and The New York Times. Known as "Suterisms" or "visual koans", his illustrations are notable for their use of bistable perception, in which Suter combines multiple images and concepts into a single image. Suter is also an accomplished fine art painter and sculptor.
Hilary B. Price is an American cartoonist. She is known for creating the comic strip Rhymes with Orange, which is published digitally on her website and in over one hundred newspapers across the United States. At the age of 25 she became the youngest cartoonist to ever be nationally syndicated. She won the Silver Reuben for "Best Newspaper Panel Cartoon" from the National Cartoonists Society four times, in 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2014.
Susan Landauer (1958–2020) was an American art historian, author, and curator of modern and contemporary art based in California. She worked for three decades, both independently and as chief curator of the San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) and co-founder of the San Francisco Center for the Book. Landauer was known for championing movements and idioms of California art, overlooked artists of the past, women artists, and artists of color. She organized exhibitions that gained national attention; among the best known are: "The San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism", "Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement", and retrospectives of Elmer Bischoff, Roy De Forest, and Franklin Williams. Her work was recognized with awards and grants from the International Association of Art Critics, National Endowment for the Arts and Henry Luce Foundation, among others. Critics, including Roberta Smith and Christopher Knight, praised her scholarship on San Francisco Abstract Expressionism, De Forest, Richard Diebenkorn, and Bernice Bing, among others, as pioneering. In 2021, Art in America editor and curator Michael Duncan said that "no other scholar has contributed as much to the study of California art". Landauer died of lung cancer at age 62 in Oakland on December 19, 2020.
Lara Bazelon is an American academic and journalist. She is a law professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law where she holds the Barnett Chair in Trial Advocacy and directs the Criminal & Juvenile and Racial Justice Clinics. She is the former director of the Loyola Law School Project for the Innocent in Los Angeles. Her clinical work as a law professor focuses on the exoneration of the wrongfully convicted.
