Jeremy Beau Sides, aka "Nug" from the YouTube channel Exploring with Nug, [2] is an American scuba diver and civilian crime investigator who investigates missing person cases and missing items. In 2021, he found the bodies of Erin Foster and Jeremy Bechtel, who had been missing for 21 years.
Sides is from Acworth, Georgia. [2] He is married and a father of two children. [3]
Before diving full-time, Sides was a metal detectorist as a hobby, searching for American Civil War relics and other lost items around his hometown. [2]
After high school, Sides worked for the United States Navy, in aviation hydraulics. Later he worked in the automotive industry. [2] [3]
When Sides started a metal detectorist YouTube channel in 2016, friends at work gave him the nickname Nug, joking that he was looking for gold. It stuck, and he changed the name of his channel to Exploring with Nug as he started exploring more and doing less metal detecting. [2]
Sides chooses unsolved missing person cases via the Charley Project online missing persons database, [4] focusing on cases where drivers went missing near bodies of water. [5] [6]
In October 2021, Sides assisted the Adventures with Purpose team while they found the truck owned by Thomas Thornton, a missing Vietnam War veteran from Tyler County, Texas. A body was found inside the truck, which police said was likely Thornton's. [7] [5]
In November 2021, Sides found a car containing the body of Miriam Ruth Hemphill, who had been missing since July 2005. [8]
In December 2021, he found the car containing the bodies of two teenagers in the case of the disappearance of Erin Foster and Jeremy Bechtel. [9] [5] [10]
In January 2022, he and two other divers found the vehicle of murder victim Alan Livingston, who had been missing since 1983. The FBI removed the body with local police in October 2022. [11]
In February 2022, Sides assisted Adventures with Purpose while they found the car owned by Margaret Shupe Smith, who had been missing since April 2021. [12]
In December 2022, Sides and several other divers and dive teams found the vehicle of Jason Spencer who had been missing since November 2022. [13] [14]
In April 2023, Recon Dive Recovery and Sunshine State Sonar found the vehicle of Robert Heikka who had been missing since 2020, Sides had searched for Heikka but had not located him. Sides made videos on YouTube crediting RDR & SSS for their work. [15] [16] Later In April, Sunshine State Sonar and Recon Dive Recovery found the vehicle of Robert Helphrey who had been missing since 2006. Sides made YouTube videos crediting their finds as well as graciously hosting a GoFundMe fundraising campaign for his fellow Sonar Search Colleagues, raising just over $3500 to be split between the 2 Orgs. Snorkeling is the practice of swimming face down on or through a body of water while breathing the ambient air through a shaped tube called a snorkel, usually with swimming goggles or a diving mask, and swimfins. In cooler waters, a wetsuit may also be worn. The snorkel may be an independent item or integrated with the mask. The use of this equipment allows the snorkeler to observe the underwater environment for extended periods with relatively little effort, and to breathe while face-down at the surface.

Deep diving is underwater diving to a depth beyond the norm accepted by the associated community. In some cases this is a prescribed limit established by an authority, while in others it is associated with a level of certification or training, and it may vary depending on whether the diving is recreational, technical or commercial. Nitrogen narcosis becomes a hazard below 30 metres (98 ft) and hypoxic breathing gas is required below 60 metres (200 ft) to lessen the risk of oxygen toxicity.
Underwater photography is the process of taking photographs while under water. It is usually done while scuba diving, but can be done while diving on surface supply, snorkeling, swimming, from a submersible or remotely operated underwater vehicle, or from automated cameras lowered from the surface.
Cave-diving is underwater diving in water-filled caves. It may be done as an extreme sport, a way of exploring flooded caves for scientific investigation, or for the search for and recovery of divers or, as in the 2018 Thai cave rescue, other cave users. The equipment used varies depending on the circumstances, and ranges from breath hold to surface supplied, but almost all cave-diving is done using scuba equipment, often in specialised configurations with redundancies such as sidemount or backmounted twinset. Recreational cave-diving is generally considered to be a type of technical diving due to the lack of a free surface during large parts of the dive, and often involves planned decompression stops. A distinction is made by recreational diver training agencies between cave-diving and cavern-diving, where cavern diving is deemed to be diving in those parts of a cave where the exit to open water can be seen by natural light. An arbitrary distance limit to the open water surface may also be specified.
A frogman is someone who is trained in scuba diving or swimming underwater in a tactical capacity that includes military, and in some European countries, police work. Such personnel are also known by the more formal names of combat diver, combatant diver, or combat swimmer. The word frogman first arose in the stage name the "Fearless Frogman" of Paul Boyton in the 1870s and later was claimed by John Spence, an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy and member of the OSS Maritime Unit, to have been applied to him while he was training in a green waterproof suit.

The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep. It has a surface area of 70,650 square metres (760,500 sq ft). It was formed during several phases of the Quaternary glaciation when sea levels were much lower. Analysis of stalactites found in the Great Blue Hole shows that formation took place 153,000, 66,000, 60,000, and 15,000 years ago. As the ocean began to rise again, the cave was flooded. The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Defenses against swimmer incursions are security methods developed to protect watercraft, ports and installations, and other sensitive resources in or near vulnerable waterways from potential threats or intrusions by swimmers or scuba divers.
Salvage diving is the diving work associated with the recovery of all or part of ships, their cargoes, aircraft, and other vehicles and structures which have sunk or fallen into water. In the case of ships it may also refer to repair work done to make an abandoned or distressed but still floating vessel more suitable for towing or propulsion under its own power. The recreational/technical activity known as wreck diving is generally not considered salvage work, though some recovery of artifacts may be done by recreational divers.

Deon Dreyer was a South African recreational scuba diver who died in Bushman's Hole in South Africa. Cave diver David Shaw died more than 10 years later while attempting to retrieve Dreyer's body.

Erin Foster and Jeremy Bechtel were two American teenagers from Sparta, Tennessee, who disappeared in April 2000. Their bodies were found in Foster's vehicle in 2021 by Jeremy Sides, a volunteer civilian cold-case investigator and YouTuber.
Adventures with Purpose is a group of professional, non-profit scuba divers who use underwater sonar imaging equipment and bathymetry mapping technology to locate missing persons and their vehicles in waterbodies. Originally focused on clean-up, their channel's focus was turned to missing persons cold cases after their accidental discovery of a missing person. Underwater exploration is the exploration of any underwater environment, either by direct observation by the explorer, or by remote observation and measurement under the direction of the investigators. Systematic, targeted exploration is the most effective method to increase understanding of the ocean and other underwater regions, so they can be effectively managed, conserved, regulated, and their resources discovered, accessed, and used. Less than 10% of the ocean has been mapped in any detail, less has been visually observed, and the total diversity of life and distribution of populations is similarly obscure.
