Jerry Samuel Yao-Kuma is the vice-chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology located in Tarkwa. [1]

Early life and education

He was born in Dzolo-Kpuita located near Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana. He went to middle school at E.P. Middle School in Hohoe and Kpandu then proceeded to Mawuli School also located in Ho and Bishop Herman College, Kpandu. He is an alumnus of University of Ghana and University of Newcastle. [2]

Works

Prof. Kuma has published a research paper on small scale mining and it's dangers in Ghana and Africa with alternative methods that can be used. [3] During his tenure in office, the University of Mines and Technology has entered a partnership with the Ghana National Small Scale Miners Association to offer training to its members in surveying, environmental care, geology and other mining related subjects and best practices. [4] In March 2014, at "Sandvik Goes to School" programme, Prof. Kuma appealed to Sandvik Mining Ghana to support the university in training licensed small scale miners in Ghana. [5]

He is the executive chairman of Jonah Capital, an equity fund based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mining industry of Ghana

The Mining industry of Ghana accounts for 5% of the country's GDP and minerals make up 37% of total exports, of which gold contributes over 90% of the total mineral exports. Thus, the main focus of Ghana's mining and minerals development industry remains focused on gold. Ghana is Africa's largest gold producer, producing 80.5 t in 2008. As a political activist, he was a founder and the first president of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in August 1947. He was also one of Ghana's Founding Fathers. He paid for Kwame Nkrumah to return to Ghana from the United States.

An artisanal miner or small-scale miner (ASM) is a subsistence miner who is not officially employed by a mining company, but works independently, mining minerals using their own resources, usually by hand.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) a public university located at Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana. UHAS is one of the youngest public universities in Ghana. Its operation started in September 2012, when the first batch of 154 students were admitted.

Professor John Owusu Gyapong is a Ghanaian Professor of Epidemiology. He is currently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Ghana.

George Kwabena Effah Benneh was a Ghanaian geographer, academic and university administrator who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon from 1992 to 1996. He was a professor and later an emeritus professor of Geography and Resource Development at the same university. Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo Gender in Mining Advocate

Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo is the founder and executive director of Georgette Barnes Ltd., a Ghanaian drilling and mining supplies company based in Accra, Ghana. She was awarded 2018 Female Entrepreneur of the Year by Invest in Africa (IIA). She was selected as one of the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining by Women in Mining – UK in (2016). She is President of Women in Mining (WIM) Ghana and co-founder of the Accra Mining Network. She was also the President of the Accra Mining Network from 2015 to 2020. Barnes Sakyi-Addo holds a BA in French and Linguistics, and a Graduate Diploma in Communications from the University of Ghana. In 2020 she was awarded an honorary DSc by the University of Mines and Technology.

Sulemanu Koney is a Ghanaian engineer and mining executive. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, and the Executive Director of the ECOWAS Federation of Chambers of Mines.
