Bishop Herman College, sometimes abbreviated to BIHECO, is a boys-only second-cycle institution located at Kpando in the Volta Region of Ghana.

History

Bishop Herman College was the first Catholic boys secondary school established by the Roman Catholic Church in the Volta Region of Ghana. The college was founded by Dutch missionaries and is named after French missionary, Bishop Augustine Herman, who served in the Keta Diocese from 1923 to 1945. [1] The school is under the administration of the archdiocese of Ho, and its motto is "Sicut Miles Christi" ("As Soldiers of Christ"). [2] The nickname for the college is BIHECO, and the students are called BIHECANS and alumni are called BHOBU (Bishop Herman Old Boys Union).

Houses

The college has eight (8) houses providing room and board, named after Catholic Saints and Old Boys.

  1. St. Augustine's House(House 1), the oldest house, named after Augustine of Hippo.
  2. St. Benedict's House (House 2).
  3. St. Cyprians' House (House 3)
  4. Etu-Mantey's house (House 4).
  5. St. Maurice's House (House 5)
  6. St. Victor's House (House 6)
  7. Bishop Lodonu's House (House 7), named after an alumnus, Emeritus Bishop Francis Anane K. Lodonu [3] [4]
  8. Monseigneur Eleezar's House (House 8), the latest house, is named after Father 'Amakpa', one of the school's longest-serving headmasters.

Originally created as an ordinary district assembly on 10 March 1989 when it was known as Kpando District, until the southern part of the district was split off by a decree of president John Agyekum Kufuor on 19 August 2004 to create South Dayi District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Kpando District. However on 28 June 2012, the southern part of the district was later split off to create North Dayi District on 28 June 2012; while the remaining part was elevated to municipal district assembly status on the same year to become Kpando Municipal District. The Ghana Secondary Technical School is a science and technology-oriented high school located in Takoradi on the west coast of Ghana. Francis Anani Kofi Lodonu is a Ghanaian Roman Catholic Bishop. He was the bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Ho until his retirement in 2015.
