Jerry Reitman (born January 9, 1938) is an American author, businessman and advertising executive. Reitman is the founder of the Reitman Group. He formerly worked for American Express, served as the vice president of marketing for the CBS Columbia House division, served as the CEO of Scali, McCabe, Sloves, [1] the International Head and Executive Vice President of Ogilvy, [2] and the Executive Vice President of Leo Burnett Worldwide. [3]

Early life

Reitman was born to Benjamin and Ruth Reitman. He grew up in a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[ citation needed ] His father was the owner of multiple shoe retail stores. [4] He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and went on to attend Penn State where he graduated with a degree in finance. [5]

Career

Reitman started his career at Ziff Davis as an ad salesman. While at Ziff Davis, he went on to become the director of their British Magazine of the Month Club. [4] He then spent time working at Publishers Clearing House and Academic Media Company. [4]

In 1974, Reitman became the International Head and Executive Vice President of Ogilvy and was successful in growing Oglivy from two offices to 26 offices over a four-year period. [6] [4] In 1982, Reitman was named the President and CEO of Scali, McCabe, Sloves where he was tasked with expanding the company. [7] In 1985, Reitman became the Executive Vice President of Leo Burnett Worldwide. [8] [9] [10] [11] He retired from Leo Burnett after working there for 15 years.

Reitman published Beyond 2000: The Future of Direct Marketing in 2000. The book talks about the future of the direct marketing industry.

Awards

Reitman has received recognition and many awards for his successful work as an advertising executive. For example, the city of New Orleans, Louisiana gifted him with the key to the city. Other awards he has received include the Direct Marketers Silver Apple, the Charles S. Downs Award and the Direct Marketer of Year Award. [12]

Charitable work

Reitman served as the chairman of the board of Governors at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals for more than 20 years. As a result of his work with the Children's Miracle Network, he was invited to the White House in 2009 and met with President Barack Obama. [13]

Personal life

Reitman is a resident of Chicago, Illinois. He also owns homes in Venice, California and Stockholm, Sweden. He is an avid tennis player and sports fan and an aspiring woodworker. [14] [ non-primary source needed ] His nephew is professional tennis player Oskar Wikberg.

The council of judges considers the election of either living or deceased persons whose record of advertising and service must be accomplished in the United States or with an American company abroad. To be eligible, individuals must be retired from their primary careers.

Michael A. Miles (1940–2013) was an American marketer and businessman from Washington, D.C., who served as Chief executive of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kraft Foods, and Philip Morris Companies, and as a director on the board of Time Warner, Sears Holdings Corporation, Dell Inc., AMR Corporation, and Citadel Broadcasting Corporation. From 1961 to 1971 he was an advertising executive at Leo Burnett Co. He was also a trustee of Northwestern University. He died on November 10, 2013 from complications of a brain tumor.

The One Club is an American non-profit organization that recognizes and promotes excellence in advertising. Founded in New York City as The One Club for Art & Copy, The One Club produces four annual award competitions: One Show, One Show Design, One Show Interactive and One Show Entertainment. The One Show Festival is held in accord with Creative Week NYC. According to The Fundamentals of Creative Advertising., "The One Club produces advertising's most prestigious awards program." Ed McCabe was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1938. He is a founder of Scali, McCabe, Sloves, an American advertising agency of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1974, he was elected to the One Club Hall of Fame at the age of 34. He remains the youngest person ever elected to the One Club Hall of Fame. He wrote several of the iconic ad campaigns of his era, including the Perdue Chicken, Volvo and Maxell advertising efforts.

Jay William Schulberg was an American advertising executive who had chief creative positions at both Ogilvy & Mather and Bozell Worldwide, with an approach to developing concise ads with memorable taglines. He was responsible for creating many notable advertising campaigns including the Got Milk? milk mustache campaign, the "Excedrin Headache" that could only be cured by the "extra-strength pain reliever", and the American Express" Don't Leave Home Without It" campaign with Karl Malden as spokesman.

Edward Gelsthorpe was an American marketing executive. He used his creative skills to build markets for new products such as Ban roll-on deodorant at Bristol-Myers, Cran-Apple juice for the Ocean Spray cooperative, and Manwich canned sloppy joe sauce for Hunt-Wesson.

David N. Martin was an American advertising executive. In 1965, Martin and his business partner, George Woltz, co-founded The Martin Agency, an advertising agency headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Martin also created the iconic tourism advertising slogan, Virginia is for Lovers, to market the U.S. state of Virginia as a tourist destination. In 2012, Advertising Age called Virginia is for Lovers, which was first unveiled in 1969, "one of the most iconic ad campaigns in the past 50 years." The advertising campaign is still used by Virginia as of 2016.

Cyril M. Schneider was an American advertising executive and author. He is best known for his work in children's advertising for Mattel and as the president of Nickelodeon from 1980 to 1984.
