Elections were held in 2005 for both Senators and Deputies to the States of Jersey.

Senator Elections

The elections for Senator were held on 19 October 2005. 6 seats were available. At the Electoral Assembly held on 13 September 2005, 15 candidates were nominated for the 6 available seats:

Only one female candidate sought nomination. Two declared parties put forward candidates: the Jersey Democratic Alliance and the Centre Party.

The Jersey Democratic Alliance was a political party in Jersey. JDA candidates contested general elections in 2005 and 2008 but announced in August 2011 that it would not be fielding candidates in the October 2011 elections.

The Centre Party was a registered political party in Jersey between 2005 and 2007.

Results

Stuart Syvret Jersey politician

Stuart Syvret is a political activist in Jersey. He held elected office as a member of the States of Jersey assembly from 1990 to 2010. From 1999 to 2007, Svyret had executive responsibilities first as President of the Health and Social Services Committee and, after the 2005 constitutional reforms, as Minister for Health and Social Services in the Council of Ministers. He was dismissed from ministerial office in September 2007 and returned to the backbenches until he was disqualified from membership of the States in April 2010 due to his absence from the island. He has been involved in a series of legal proceedings, as a defendant in a criminal prosecution in Jersey and as a claimant in judicial review and civil claims in Jersey and London.

Ben Shenton is the son of the politician and former Senator Dick Shenton.

Freddie Cohen Jersey politician

Frederick Ellyer Cohen is a British businessman and former politician. He was a senator in the Bailiwick of Jersey for six years from October 2005 until unseated at the election of November 2011.

Deputy Elections

The election for Deputies was held on 23 November. Electoral assemblies were held in all parishes on 25 October. 52 candidates were nominated in contested elections for 23 seats.

St Helier Number One District

Paul Vincent Le Claire was a member of the States of Jersey from 1999 to 2011. He represented the Saint Helier District No.1 constituency and between 1999 and 2005 had an island-wide mandate as a senator.

Judy Martin is a Jersey politician who was first elected as a Deputy for St Helier in the Jersey by-election of 2000.

Patrick Ryan is a member of the States of Jersey, and was first elected as a Deputy of St Helier No. 1 district in 2001.

St Helier Number two district

Shona Pitman is a former Jersey politician who was first elected as a Deputy for St Helier in the Jersey general election of 2005. She lost her seat in January 2014 after being declared bankrupt.

Geoff Southern Jersey politician, and former teacher

Geoff Southern is a Jersey politician, and former teacher. He has been a deputy in the States of Jersey since winning a by-election, on 15 February 2002, and has chaired two scrutiny panels.

Alan John Henry Maclean is a Jersey politician, the current Minister for Treasury and Resources, and a former Minister for Economic Development. He was first elected to the States of Jersey, as a Deputy for Saint Helier, in the Jersey 2005 general election.

Guy de Faye is a former news presenter, and former member of the States of Jersey who was first elected in 2002 as Deputy, and re-elected in 2005.

Elections in Jersey

Elections in Jersey take place for the Assembly of the States of Jersey and at parish-level. Various parties have been formed over the years in Jersey, but few candidates stand for election affiliated to any political party. All elections in Jersey use the First-past-the-post voting system. In 2008, the voting age was reduced to 16 years.

Jersey Battle of Flowers carnival in the Channel Islands

The Jersey Battle of Flowers is an annual carnival held in the Channel Island of Jersey in the second Thursday of August. The festival consists of music, funfairs, dancers, majorettes and a parade of flower floats alongside various street entertainers. It was inaugurated in 1902 to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The largest attendance to date is thought to be that of 1969 when 60,000 people were present. Elections were held in 2002 for both Senators and Deputies to the States of Jersey.

The 2007 Constable elections in Jersey were the last before a revised election system was introduced to the island in 2008, resulting in some elected Constables serving terms of less than 15 months.

Roads in Jersey highway system

Roads in Jersey are labelled "A", "B" or "C" in a similar scheme used in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. The maximum speed limit on Jersey's roads is 40 mph. On the 18th of January, Transport Minister Deputy Kevin Lewis announced that the speed limit on several Jersey roads will be lowered to 30 miles per hour. Deputy Lewis said that changes came following requests from parish officials.

2011 Jersey general election

General elections for the States of Jersey were held in Jersey on 19 October 2011, and for the first time Senators, Deputies and Constables were elected on a single day in Jersey. The number of members of the States of Jersey was reduced from 53 to 51. Six Senators who had been elected in 2008 for a period of six years did not face election in 2011.

Senator Sam Mézec is a Reform Jersey politician. He was the deputy for St. Helier District No. 2 from 2014 to 2018 and currently holds a Senatorial seat in the States of Jersey. He is the chairman of Reform Jersey.
