Ben Shenton is a politician active in Jersey. He is also the son of the politician and former Senator Dick Shenton.
He was born in Saint Helier in 1960, the third of four children and educated at De La Salle College.
He lives in Grouville, Jersey.
Shenton entered the States of Jersey at the first attempt.
He was elected as a Senator in the 2005 elections, coming second after Senator Stuart Syvret, with 14,025 votes. [1]
On 19 September 2007 he defeated the Chief Minister's nominated candidate to become Minister for Health and Social Services. He appointed Senator Jim Perchard as Assistant Minister with special responsibility for social services.
As Health and Social Services Minister he represented Jersey at the British-Irish Council Summit held in Dublin on 14 February 2008. [2]
In 2009 he was elected Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and President of the Chairman's Committee – a Committee consisting of all the Chairmen of the various scrutiny panels and PAC. He resigned from the post of President of Chairman's Committee in 2011 on a matter of principle upon which he was later vindicated.
Despite deciding not to stand for re-election and his term of office ended 14 November 2011, Shenton has said that he hopes to return to the political arena in the future. [3]
Shenton was responsible for lodging a proposition to grant a winter fuel allowance to old age pensioners in Jersey and successfully having the proposition passed by the States of Jersey.[ citation needed ]
He has also fought – and won – numerous battles concerning issues ranging from the management structure[ clarification needed ] of the Jersey Treasury to the siting of local phone masts,[ clarification needed ] and adherence to planning procedures. Recent Public Accounts Committee documents include a detailed analysis of the States of Jersey Report & Accounts, the shared-equity scheme, States management of foreign exchange risk, States Spending Review, and a review of Jersey Heritage Trust.[ citation needed ]
Brian Patrick Lenihan was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who served as Tánaiste from 1987 to 1990, Minister for Defence from 1989 to 1990, Minister for Agriculture from March 1982 to December 1982, Minister for Fisheries from 1977 to 1979, Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1987 to 1989, 1979 to 1981 and January 1973 to March 1973, Minister for Transport and Power from 1969 to 1973, Minister for Education from 1968 to 1969, Minister for Justice from 1964 to 1969, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Justice and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Lands from 1961 to 1964. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1961 to 1973 and from 1977 to 1995. He served as a Senator for the Industrial and Commercial Panel from 1957 to 1961 and 1973 to 1977. He also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Oireachtas from 1973 to 1977.
Michael Woods is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician who served as Government Chief Whip from July 1979 to December 1979, Minister for Social Welfare from 1979 to 1981, 1987 to 1991, March 1982 to December 1982 and 1993 to 1994, Minister for Health from 1979 to 1981, March 1982 to December 1982 and November 1994 to December 1994, Minister for Agriculture and Food from 1991 to 1992, Minister for the Marine from 1992 to 1993, Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources from 1997 to 2000 and Minister for Education and Science from 2000 to 2002. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1977 to 2011.
Dame Margaret Olivia Hillier, known as Meg Hillier, is a British Labour and Co-operative politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hackney South and Shoreditch at the 2005 general election, was a junior government minister (2007–10) and was succeeded by Caroline Flint as Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change in the Labour Party October 2011 reshuffle. She has chaired the Public Accounts Committee since 2015.
Roy Beggs Jr is an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician, who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for East Antrim from 1998 until March 2022. Beggs is the son of the politician Roy Beggs, who was the UUP Member of Parliament (MP) for East Antrim from 1983 to 2005.

Stuart Syvret is a former Jersey politician. He held elected office as a member of the States of Jersey assembly from 1990 to 2010. From 1999 to 2007, Svyret had executive responsibilities first as President of the Health and Social Services Committee and, after the 2005 constitutional reforms, as Minister for Health and Social Services in the Council of Ministers. He was dismissed from ministerial office in September 2007 and returned to the backbenches until he was disqualified from membership of the States in April 2010 due to his absence from the island. He has been involved in a series of legal proceedings, as a defendant in a criminal prosecution in Jersey and as a claimant in judicial review and civil claims in Jersey and London.

Philip Ozouf is a Jersey politician who is currently serving as the Minister for External Relations and Financial Services and a Deputy for the Parish of St Saviour. He was a member of the States of Jersey from 1999 until 2018, serving as Economic Development Minister, Treasury and Resources Minister, and Assistant Chief Minister in the Council of Ministers.
Mike Vibert was a teacher, Jersey politician, and the island's Minister for Education, Sport and Culture from 2005 until 2008.
John Alexander Nicholas Le Fondré is a Jersey politician who was the fourth Chief Minister of Jersey. He entered the States Assembly in 2005 as deputy for the Parish of St Lawrence, and was re-elected to this position in 2011 and 2014. During his time as deputy he served in various roles in scrutiny and as an Assistant Minister.
James Leslie Perchard is a former politician who was elected as Senator in the States of Jersey in the 2005 election.
Michael William D'Arcy is the chief executive of the Irish Association of Investment Management. He is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who was elected to the Seanad for the Agricultural Panel in April 2020. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Wexford constituency from 2016 to 2020, and previously between 2007 and 2011. He served as Minister of State at the Department of Finance from 2017 to 2020. He previously served as a Senator for the Administrative Panel from 2011 to 2016.
Richard Joseph "Dick" Shenton, born in St. Helier, was a politician in Jersey. He retired in 2005.

The Council of Ministers is the collective decision-making body of the Government of Jersey, formed by the Ministers of the States of Jersey and the Chief Minister. The council co-ordinates policies and administration, especially policy affecting two or more ministers, prioritises executive and legislative proposals, and presents a "Strategic Plan for Jersey" for approval by the States Assembly.
