Sir Timothy John Le Cocq KC (born 1956 [3] ) is a Jersey lawyer who is the current Bailiff of Jersey. [4] He was sworn in on 17 October 2019. [5]
Le Cocq was born in Jersey. He attended Beaulieu Convent School,De La Salle College and Keele University. [3]
Le Cocq was called to the English Bar in 1981 and to the Jersey Bar in 1985. He became a Crown Advocate in 1996 [6] and was appointed as Her Majesty's Solicitor General on 8 April 2008. [4] He became Attorney General on 10 November 2009,Deputy Bailiff on 2 April 2015 [4] [6] and Bailiff on 17 October 2019. [1]
Le Cocq was knighted in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to Jersey. [7]
In October 2024,Le Cocq announced that he would be retiring as Bailiff on 17 October 2025,six years to the day from his appointment in 2019. [8]
The Bailiff is the chief justice in each of the Channel Island bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey,also serving as president of the legislature and having ceremonial and executive functions. Each bailiwick has possessed its own bailiff since the islands were divided into two jurisdictions in the 13th century. The bailiffs and deputy bailiffs are appointed by the Crown on the advice of the Secretary of State for Justice and may hold office until retirement age.
The Bailiff of Jersey is the civic head of the Bailiwick of Jersey. In this role,he is not the head of government nor the head of state,but the chief justice of Jersey and presiding officer of Jersey's parliament,the States Assembly. The COVID-19 pandemic in the Bailiwick of Jersey was part of a global pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19),a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first case in Jersey was confirmed on 10 March 2020 when a person tested positive on the island after returning from Italy.
The 2022 Jersey general election was held on 22 June 2022 to elect connétables and deputies to the States Assembly. As in previous elections,the majority of seats were won by independents. The governing Jersey Alliance party suffered a heavy defeat,losing all but one of its seats. Following the election,a coalition government led by Better Way Deputy Kristina Moore was formed.

On 10 December 2022,an explosion destroyed a block of flats in St Helier,Jersey in the Channel Islands. Ten people were killed in the suspected gas explosion,which occurred just before 4 a.m. GMT.
