Jigna Desai

Jigna Desai (born 1968 in Ahmedabad, India) is a Professor in the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and Asian American Studies, currently at the University of Minnesota. [1] [2] She is a writer, teacher, mentor, artist, and engaged researcher whose scholarship crosses many fields of study including transnational feminism, Asian American Studies, queer studies, postcolonial feminism, critical disability studies, critical youth studies, feminist media studies, critical ethnic studies, and critical university studies. She has also written extensively on issues of racial and gender disparities and social justice.

Feminist media, Bollywood, and South Asian diasporas

For the last two decades, she has researched how media impacts identities and communities in the United States and globally. Her early work was formative to the study of South Asian diasporas and diasporic culture in Britain, Canada, and the United States, especially from a feminist and queer perspectives. She is also known for her scholarship on English-language Indian films, Indian cinema, Bollywood, and transnational cinema; her book Beyond Bollywood was the first scholarly work to take a "comprehensive look at the emergence, development, and significance of contemporary South Asian diasporic cinema." [3] She has written about filmmakers such as Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, and Kaizad Gustad. She also co-edited the collection Bollywood: A Reader with Rajinder Dudrah.

Asian American studies, migration, and emergent communities

In Asian American Studies, Desai is known for her contributions to rethinking the importance of understudied Asian American communities in the South and Midwest. She co-edited the interdisciplinary collection Asian Americans in Dixie: Race and Migration in the South with Khyati Joshi. She also serves as co-editor of the Asian American Experience book series for the University of Illinois Press.

Critical university studies, K–12 engaged research, digital learning

She has long been an advocate for underrepresented students of color within higher education. For two decades, her teaching and service have worked to strengthen institutional support for both undergraduate and graduate students of color. For the last decade, she has focused on the role of digital learning in the university classroom; she is especially interested in how digital tools can be integrated to empower students and further social justice. For the past year, she has been working to empower urban middle school students through digital storytelling through the Minnesota Youth Story Squad.

Education, career, and awards

Desai has a B.S. in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences and a second B.S. in Literature with Cognitive Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in English (with a minor in feminist studies) from the University of Minnesota. At MIT, she worked as an undergraduate research assistant for Dr. Steven Pinker. Subsequently, she conducted astronomical research at University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with Dr. Saul Perlmutter, and Dr. Carlton R. Pennypacker, and Dr. Gerson Goldhaber on the Supernova Cosmology Project. [4]

She has also been honored to receive several awards for her teaching, mentorship, and service including the Association for Asian American Studies Excellence in Mentorship Award, University of Minnesota's Arthur “Red” Motley Undergraduate Teaching Award, University of Minnesota’s Graduate and Professional Teaching Award, and University of Minnesota's President’s Award for Outstanding Service. She has been recognized with residential fellowships at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of Western Cape, Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Minnesota, and at Harvard University. Desai has been designated a Generation Next Faculty Fellow, Fink Faculty Innovation Professor, and shares the Imagine Chair in Arts, Humanities, and Design with Tammy Berberi and Jennifer Row at the University of Minnesota.

Suad Joseph received her doctorate in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1975. Dr. Joseph is Professor of Anthropology and Women and Gender Studies at the University of California, Davis and in 2009 was President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America. Her research addresses issues of gender; families, children, and youth; sociology of the family; and selfhood, citizenship, and the state in the Middle East, with a focus on her native Lebanon. Her earlier work focused on the politicization of religion in Lebanon. The African Gender Institute (AGI) is a feminist research and teaching group that studies issues related to gender in Africa. It has become a department at the University of Cape Town (UCT), administered within the School of African and Gender Studies, Social Anthropology and Linguistics. M. Jacqui Alexander is a writer, teacher, and activist. She is both a Professor Emeritus at the Women and Gender Studies Department of the University of Toronto as well as the creator and director of the Tobago Centre "for the study and practice of indigenous spirituality". Jacqui Alexander is an enthusiast of "the ancient African (diasporic) spiritual systems of Orisa/Ifá, and a student of yoga and Vipassana meditation". She has received teachings on this meditative practice in Nigeria, the Kôngo, India, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and New York. The themes of her work have captured a range of social justice subjects from the effects of imperialism, colonialism, and enslavement with special attention paid to the "pathologizing narratives" around homosexuality, gender, nationalism. Alexander's academic areas of interest specifically include: African Diasporic Cosmologies, African Diasporic Spiritual Practices, Caribbean studies, Gender and the Sacred, Heterosexualization and State Formation, Transnational feminism.

J. Kēhaulani Kauanui is an American author, radio producer and professor. She is one of six co-founders of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA). A Kanaka Maoli woman, Kauanui was raised in California. She was awarded a Fulbright (1994-1995) at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where she was affiliated with the Māori Studies department. Her research areas focus on indigeneity and race, settler colonialism, decolonization, anarchism, and gender and sexuality.

Kareem Khubchandani is a researcher, performance artist, and organizer. Khubchandani's research, teaching, and performance exists at the intersections between queer nightlife, global politics, ethnography, South Asian diaspora, and drag. Khubchandani performs in drag as LaWhore Vagistan who interweaves storytelling, standup comedy, body art, theater, and digital media.

Chris (Christine) Beasley is an Australian researcher whose interdisciplinary work crosses the fields of social and political theory, gender and sexuality studies and cultural studies. She is Emerita Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Adelaide. She is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences. In 2018, Beasley was named the leading researcher in feminism and women's studies in Australia based on major journal publications in the field. Beasley was the founder and inaugural co-Director of the Fay Gale Centre from 2009 to 2013.

Patti Duncan is an American academic and author, and a Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Oregon State University.

Aysha Hidayatullah is an Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of San Francisco. She is most known for her work critiquing feminist interpretations of the Qur'an, Feminist Edges of the Qur'an.
