James (Jim) Zalesky (born January 15, 1961) is an American college wrestling coach and is currently the head coach of the University of Jamestown. He was the former head wrestling coach for the Oregon State Beavers. Prior to joining the Beavers, he was the coach of the University of Iowa wrestling team from 1998 to 2006. At Iowa, he succeeded Dan Gable as head coach, under whom he was a three-time NCAA champion. As head coach for Iowa, he guided the Hawkeyes to three NCAA team championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000. In 2004, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member.

Career

Wrestling

Zalesky was a four-time All-American at Iowa from 1981 to 1984. He won the NCAA individual title in the 158 pound weight class in 1982, 1983, and 1984. He went undefeated his last two years, ending his college career with an 89 match winning streak. [1] At the 1984 NCAA Championships, he was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Amateur Wrestling News named him "Wrestler of the Decade" for the 1980s. His competitive college career occurred during the streak of which the University of Iowa wrestling team won seven consecutive national titles. [2]

He narrowly missed making the 1984 Olympic wrestling team, finishing second in the 163 pound weight class at the US Olympic trials. [3]

Zalesky was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 2004. [3]

Coaching

Despite coaching the Hawkeyes to three NCAA team championships in nine years, with a runner-up finish in 2004 and a 4th place finish in 2006, Zalesky was fired as Iowa's head coach on March 30, 2006. [4] Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby cited a decline in the program under Zalesky and the need for a change as the reasons.

Oregon State's prior head coach, Joe Wells, retired a few days later leaving the program on a high note ending with a 13–2–1 record for the 2005–06 season. Zalesky was announced as Oregon State's new head coach on April 14, 2006. Under Zalesky, the Beavers won seven Pac-12 team titles from 2006 to 2020. The Beavers were 147-75-2 in dual meets during Zalesky's tenure. On March 9, 2020, Zalesky was dismissed as head coach by Oregon State University. [5]

On May 4, 2021 the University of Jamestown in North Dakota hired Zalesky as the new men's wrestling coach. [6]

Zalesky overall coaching record is 274-109-2, with him having coached over 50 All-Americans. [7]

He competed in the men's Greco-Roman light heavyweight at the 1956 Summer Olympics. He died of kidney and liver failure due to complications from primary sclerosing cholangitis at the age of 81.

Artur Wojdat is a former international and collegiate swimmer from Poland, who won the bronze medal in the men's 400 meter freestyle at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. He also competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He came to the 1988 Seoul Olympics as the world record holder in the 400 meter freestyle event. In the final he beat his world record time, but managed to only finish third behind Uwe Dassler and Duncan Armstrong.

Miller played college football and basketball at the University of Kansas. His performance on the football team led to him being selected in the 1942 NFL draft, but he chose to serve in the military instead of playing in the NFL.

Nate Carr is an American former collegiate and international senior level freestyle wrestler. He grew up in a family of 16 children in Erie, Pennsylvania. Five of these, including Nate, would become All-American wrestlers and two, again including Nate, would compete in the Olympic Games. In 2003, Carr was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member.

Tom Brands is an American former Olympic wrestler and is currently the head coach of the University of Iowa men's wrestling team. He won a gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Terry Brands is an American Olympic wrestler who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics, losing the semi-final match to Alireza Dabir. While wrestling at the University of Iowa, Brands won NCAA titles in 1990 and 1992, both at 126 pounds. He was a two-time world freestyle champion at 58 kg, winning titles in 1993 and 1995.

Robert Edward Douglas is a retired American freestyle wrestler and coach. He competed as a featherweight at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics and placed fourth in 1964. He won a silver and a bronze medal at the 1966 and 1970 world championships, respectively, and retired later in 1970. After that Douglas coached several U.S Olympic teams, is one of only four collegiate coaches to win more than 400 dual meets, and he won an NCAA team national title at Arizona State in 1988. His coaching accomplishments include: 13 NCAA champions, 110 All-America performances, and 68 conference titles.

The University of Iowa men's wrestling program is one of the most successful NCAA Division I athletic programs. The Hawkeyes are 37 time Big Ten Conference champions and second in NCAA history with 24 National Championships.

The Oregon State Beavers wrestling program was established in 1909. Traditionally a nationally prominent team, the Beavers won the Amateur Athletic Union national championship in 1926 and have won their conference championship over 50 times. The team has produced 99 All-Americans, 12 individual national champions, is associated with five National Wrestling Hall of Fame members, and has had wrestlers represent their nations at the olympic games on ten different occasions. The team has finished their season ranked in the NCAA top 25 on 46 occasions, including finishing 21 seasons in the top 10 and two seasons as national runners-up.

The Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team is part of the University of Iowa athletics department.

Mark Philip Schultz is a former American freestyle wrestler. Schultz was a 3-time NCAA champion, Olympic champion and 2-time World champion. In 1995, Schultz was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member. He is also in the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, the California Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the San Mateo Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.

Barry Alan Davis is an Olympic silver medalist, a World bronze and silver medalist, and a Pan American Games gold medalist in freestyle wrestling. From 1994 until 2018, he served as head wrestling coach at the University of Wisconsin.

William Michael Zadick is an American amateur wrestler. He won an NCAA college wrestling championship while competing with the University of Iowa and a gold medal at the 2006 World Wrestling Championships in freestyle wrestling.

Travis Fiser is an American high school wrestling coach and former collegiate wrestler. He is the head coach at Grundy High School, Grundy, Virginia, and a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
