The Jinnah Stadium, formerly known as Municipal Stadium, is a multipurpose stadium in Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan. [2] It is used mostly for cricket matches. Built in 1983, the creator of this stadium is Alhaj Muhammad Aslam Butt (former mayor of Gujranwala). [3] The stadium can accommodate 20,000 spectators and is known for having one of the fastest pitches in the world. [4] [5]

Jinnah Stadium is the largest stadium in Gujranwala, followed by the Mini Stadium, an association of football ground which has a capacity of 15,000.[ citation needed ] Since 2000, due to lack of international matches has led to the stadium being used for political rallies. [6] [7] [8] The absence of a five-star hotel in Gujranwala is cited as the main reason for the lack of international matches at the venue. [5]

History

Jinnah Stadium was built as Municipal Stadium in 1983. [4] [5] It hosted its first and only Test match in 1991. [9] Over the years, cricketers such as Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Arjuna Ranatunga, and Sanath Jayasuriya have played at Jinnah Stadium. [5] Sachin Tendulkar made his ODI cricket debut in 1989 at this ground. [10] The last ODI match played there was between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 2000 and was the first ODI match Aleem Dar umpired. [11]

Cricket World Cup

This stadium hosted an ODI match in the 1996 Cricket World Cup between Pakistan and UAE. [12]

Aleem Dar PP is a Pakistani cricket umpire and former first-class cricketer. He has been a member of the Elite Panel of ICC Umpires. Dar won the David Shepherd Trophy three years in a row from 2009 to 2011, after being nominated twice in 2005 and 2006. Aleem Dar, Marais Erasmus, Richard Kettleborough, Kumar Dharmasena and Simon Taufel were the only umpires to have received the award from its inception until 2017. Before becoming an umpire, Dar played first-class cricket as a right-handed batsman and a leg-break bowler for Allied Bank, Gujranwala, Lahore and Pakistan Railways teams.

The India national cricket team toured the Pakistan during the 1989–90 cricket season. India played four Test and One Day International matches each,and three other matches between 11 November and 22 December 1989, against the Pakistan cricket team. The Test series was drawn 0–0 and Pakistan won the ODI series 2–0. The tour marked the international debut of Sachin Tendulkar.

Faisal Stadium is situated in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan. This is multi-purpose stadium. The stadium has basket ball court, cricket ground, squash court, wrestling ground, an auditorium and grass plot. This is biggest ground of city for sports and political events. The main ground is used for cricket, football and hockey matches as well as political events.
