The United Bank Limited Sports Complex is a cricket ground in Karachi, Pakistan. It was the home ground of the United Bank Limited cricket team. [1] The complex contains facilities for basketball, cricket, field hockey, tennis, and table tennis, and occupies around 17 acres of area. [2]

Since its establishment in 1992, the ground has hosted more than 120 first-class matches. [3]

History

United Bank Limited Sports Complex was established in 1992 by United Bank Limited on an amenity plot awarded by the government under Martial Law Ordinance (MLO), to private organizations to build sport facilities in the city. [2]

It was selected as a venue to host matches in the 2016–17 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. [4] In September 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board named it as one of the venues to host matches in the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. [5] In December 2023, the PCB named it as one of the venues to host matches in the 2023–24 President's Trophy. [6]

It is the largest cricket stadium in Pakistan with a capacity to accommodate 34,000 spectators. It was built in the early 1950s under the supervision of senior civil engineer Mr. Abdul Rasheed Khan (WP) and Mr. Kafiluddin (EP), and was formally inaugurated in April 1955. In October 2022, the National Bank of Pakistan and the PCB agreed to a five-year naming-rights agreement, and resulted in the Stadium's new title, National Bank Cricket Arena.

The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is a domestic first-class cricket competition in Pakistan. With few exceptions, it has been staged annually since it was first played during the 1953–54 season. Domestic cricket in Pakistan has undergone many reorganisations, with the number of teams and matches in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy changing regularly. It has been variously contested by associations or departments, or a combination of the two. From 2019–20 to 2022–23 it was contested by six regional teams. For the 2023–24 season it was expanded to eight regional teams.

Ali Shafique is a Pakistani cricketer. He made his List A debut for Habib Bank Limited in the 2016–17 Departmental One Day Cup on 17 December 2016. He made his first-class debut for Khan Research Laboratories in the 2017–18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on 9 October 2017. He made his Twenty20 debut for Lahore Blues in the 2017–18 National T20 Cup on 18 November 2017. During the 2019 Pakistan Super League tournament he played for Multan Sultans, and was noticed during his first match, with bowling figures of 2/11 off 4 overs against Islamabad United, eventually earning the man-of-the-match award, while pace-wise also clocking at 142 km/h.

The 2017–18 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was the 60th edition of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan's domestic first-class cricket competition. It was contested by 16 teams representing eight regional associations and eight departments, and took place from 26 September to 25 December 2017, spanning almost two weeks less than originally planned. Pakistan's former Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq was critical of the compressed schedule and the quality of the pitches saying "it takes time to prepare a good pitch for a game and nobody can make it in two days".
