JoNina Marie Abron-Ervin (b. 1948) is an American journalist and activist. She became involved with the black power movement following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and a trip she took to Rhodesia. While at university, she reported for several newspapers, including The Cincinnati Herald and The Chicago Defender . After graduating, she joined the Black Panther Party and was active in organising a number of its survival programs, as well as serving as the last editor of the party newspaper, The Black Panther until the party's dissolution. She was also managing editor of the academic journal The Black Scholar, and worked as a professor at Western Michigan University. Since her retirement, she has remained active in community organizing and anti-racist activism, and is affiliated with Black anarchism.
Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, Abron was the daughter of a priest in the United Methodist Church. She was educated at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where she reported she had received a discounted rate "for being a preacher's kid". By the time she enrolled in university in the late 1960s, the United States was experiencing a broad countercultural movement, with the rise of the black power movement and the opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War. [1] Abron reported her own feeling of radicalization following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. [2]
In 1968, Abron travelled to Rhodesia, [3] along with other students and teachers from Baker. There she worked at a black-owned newspaper, which was subjected to strict censorship by the white-minority government. She described this as a "transforming experience" that developed her understanding of journalism. Upon her return to Kansas, she became editor of the Baker Orange, graduating with a degree in journalism in 1970. She then went to work at The Cincinnati Herald and subsequently moved to Chicago, where she worked as a reporter for The Chicago Defender and in public relations at Malcolm X College. [1]
In 1972, Abron earned a master's degree in communication at Purdue University. That same year, she joined the Detroit chapter of the Black Panther Party, going on to work at the party headquarters in Oakland, California, [3] where she became the last editor of the party's newspaper, The Black Panther . [4] She played an active role in the development of the BPP's "survival programs," [5] which included provisions for Free Breakfast for Children, free buses for prison visitors and a free education program. [6] She was active within the party up until its dissolution; although she would later say that she was "still a Panther. I'll die one." [2] From 1974 to 1990, she also edited the academic journal The Black Scholar, after which she worked as a professor of journalism at Western Michigan University. [1]
Abron retired from teaching in 2003, but continued to write books and be involved in anti-racist activism. [1] Together with her husband, the anarchist writer and activist Lorenzo Kom'boa Ervin, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they engaged in community organizing in their neighborhood near Fisk University. [7] In the wake of the Ferguson unrest in 2014, Abron and Ervin moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where they established the Ida B. Wells Coalition Against Racism and Police Brutality, named after journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells. Although Abron did not participate in the George Floyd protests in 2020 due to her age and the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic, she provided advice for younger activists involved in the protest movement. [1] Between 2021 and 2023, Abron and Ervin, released thirteen episodes of the Black Autonomy Podcast, on the topic of Black anarchism. [8]
Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is against all forms of authority and seeks to abolish the institutions it claims maintain unnecessary coercion and hierarchy, typically including the state and capitalism. Anarchism advocates for the replacement of the state with stateless societies and voluntary free associations. As a historically left-wing movement, this reading of anarchism is placed on the farthest left of the political spectrum, usually described as the libertarian wing of the socialist movement.
Ella Josephine Baker was an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. She was a largely behind-the-scenes organizer whose career spanned more than five decades. In New York City and the South, she worked alongside some of the most noted civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King Jr. She also mentored many emerging activists, such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, and Bob Moses, as leaders in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
Black anarchism, also known as New Afrikan anarchism or Panther anarchism, is an anti-authoritarian and anti-racist current of the Black power movement and anarchism in the United States. It is characterized by its intersectional analysis of different forms of oppression, its skepticism of both authoritarian socialism and Eurocentric anarchism, and its advocacy of community organizing, armed self-defense and revolutionary black nationalism.
The Free Breakfast for School Children Program, or the People’s Free Food Program, was a community service program run by the Black Panther Party that focused on providing free breakfast for children before school. The program began in January 1969 at Father Earl A. Neil's St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, located in West Oakland, California and spread throughout the nation. This program was an early manifestation of the social mission envisioned by Black Panther Party founders Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, along with their founding of the Oakland Community School, which provided high-level education to 150 children from impoverished urban neighborhoods. The breakfasts formed the core of what became known as the party's Survival Programs. Inspired by contemporary research about the essential role of breakfast for optimal schooling and the belief that alleviating hunger and poverty was necessary for Black liberation, the Panthers cooked and served food to the poor inner city youth of the area. The service created community centers in various cities for children and parents to simultaneously eat and learn more about black liberation and the Black Panther Party's efforts.
Lorenzo Kom'boa Ervin is an American writer, activist, and black anarchist. He is a former member of the Black Panther Party and Concerned Citizens for Justice. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and has lived in Memphis, Tennessee, since 2010.
Post-colonial anarchism is a term used to describe anarchism in an anti-imperialist framework. Whereas traditional anarchism arose from industrialized Western nations—and thus sees history from their perspective—post-colonial anarchism approaches the same principles of anarchism from the perspective of colonized peoples. It is highly critical of the contributions of the established anarchist movement, and seeks to add what it sees as a unique and important perspective. The tendency is strongly influenced by indigenism, anti-state forms of nationalism, and anarchism among ethnic minorities, among other sources.
The Black Panther Party was a Marxist–Leninist and black power political organization founded by college students Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton in October 1966 in Oakland, California. The party was active in the United States between 1966 and 1982, with chapters in many major American cities, including San Francisco, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Philadelphia. They were also active in many prisons and had international chapters in the United Kingdom and Algeria. Upon its inception, the party's core practice was its open carry patrols ("copwatching") designed to challenge the excessive force and misconduct of the Oakland Police Department. From 1969 onward, the party created social programs, including the Free Breakfast for Children Programs, education programs, and community health clinics. The Black Panther Party advocated for class struggle, claiming to represent the proletarian vanguard.

Seize The Time: The Story of The Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton is a 1970 book by political activist Bobby Seale. It was recorded in San Francisco County Jail between November 1969 and March 1970, by Arthur Goldberg, a reporter for the San Francisco Bay Guardian. An advocacy book on the cause and principles of the Black Panther Party, Seize The Time is considered a staple in Black Power literature.
The Gilda Stories is the 1991 debut novel of American author and activist Jewelle Gomez. Published in 1991, this speculative fiction vampire novel follows the experiences of a black lesbian heroine whose power and morality challenge assumptions about the vampire myth. Readers see this central character travel through time and lead multiple lives. In her first life, she is an unnamed runaway slave in Louisiana in 1850. After killing a bounty hunter in self-defense, she is rescued by Gilda, a vampire who runs a brothel named Woodard's. The women at the brothel educate her, become her family, and introduce her to vampirism and eternal life. Eventually, she becomes a vampire herself and adopts Gilda's name. The novel follows by providing historical vignettes of different cities and time periods, which highlight key moments in Gilda's life. She is in California in 1890, Missouri in 1921, Massachusetts in 1955, New York in 1981, New Hampshire in 2020, and the "Land of Enchantment" in 2050. This movement across time and space also situates the themes of blackness, sexuality, and female empowerment in various contexts.

Joan Tarika Lewis, is an American visual artist, musician, author, political activist. She was the first woman to join the Black Panther Party.
Mary Lovelace O'Neal is an American artist and arts educator. Her work is focused on abstracted mixed-media and minimalism. She is a Professor Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley and retired from teaching in 2006. O'Neal's art has been exhibited widely throughout North America and internationally, with group and solo shows in Italy, France, Chile, Senegal and Nigeria. She lives and works in Oakland, California, and maintains a studio in Chile.

She is best known for her influence on increasing representation of Black authors in education and in literary schools of thought. Washington is a past president of the American Studies Association, and an experienced English professor.
Anarchism and libertarianism, as broad political ideologies with manifold historical and contemporary meanings, have contested definitions. Archibald Wickeramaraja Singham, also known as Archie Singham or A. W. Singham (1932-1991) was a Sri Lankan political scientist and historian, professor of political science at Brooklyn College of City University of New York. He was an authority on the Caribbean and a participant in the Non-Aligned Movement.
Gwendolyn Marie Patton was a prominent civil rights activist and educator. Patton’s first steps into the civil rights movement were with the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) where she helped African Americans register to vote with her grandparents. During this time, she also participated in the Montgomery bus boycott. After her time with the MIA, Patton could be seen working with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) at Tuskegee University and the Lowndes County Freedom Organization. Following her time at Tuskegee University, she assisted in establishing both anti-war and human rights organizations that furthermore supported the feminist and Black Power movements, as well as communism, the Cuban Revolution, and marxism. In the 1984 presidential debates, she started her political career as a delegate for Jesse Jackson’s campaign. Then in 1986 as a candidate for Alabama legislature, and finally in 1992 in the U.S. Senate. Patton was also a historian, which helped her to construct the H. Councill Trenholm State Technical College, which is now called the Trenholm State Community College.
