Joe Fletcher (born September 10, 1976) is a Canadian former soccer referee from Niagara Falls, Ontario. [1] He is currently the manager of senior assistant referees for the Professional Referee Organization. [1]

Fletcher is also known in accounting circles as a Chartered Professional Accountant who had his designation revoked by CPA Canada in 2020. Fletcher was disciplined for improperly taking $14.2 million in loans from his clients and falsifying documents to cover up his misconduct. [2]

Career

Fletcher initially began officiating in 1999 in the Canadian Professional Soccer League, after receiving the opportunity from Tony Camacho then the CPSL Director of Officials. [3] [4]

When the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup was held that summer in Canada, he was selected to be one of the tournament's assistant referees. [5] In 2007, he officiated the 2007 Open Canada Cup finals match. [6] He was also voted the CSL Referee of the Year in 2007. [7] In 2012, the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) selected Fletcher as the recipient for the Ray Morgan Memorial Award, and the Canada Soccer International Achievement Award in 2015. [8] [9]

In 2018, he was voted MLS assistant referee of the year. [10] On January 18, 2019, he retired from officiating and served as a referee instructor for the CSA. [11] In January 2020, he was named the manager of senior assistant referees for the Professional Referee Organization (PRO). [12]

Outside of soccer, Fletcher was a CPA. In 2020, Fletcher was suspended by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario for misconduct, after having been found to have improperly borrowed money from clients and falsified audits to hide the trail. [13]

World Cup

He was selected as an assistant referee for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. [14] [15]

In 2018, Fletcher was selected to be an assistant referee at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, his second World Cup appointment. [16] [17] He was an assistant video assistant referee for the Argentina vs Iceland and Uruguay vs Portugal games. He was also an assistant referee for the Portugal vs Morocco, South Korea vs Germany and the knockout stage match Colombia vs England. [18]

Nicholas Lindsay is a Canadian soccer player who began his career at the academy level with TFC Academy in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL) in 2009. He successfully made the transition to the professional level in 2010 after securing a contract with Toronto FC in the Major League Soccer (MLS). After a three tenure in the MLS he returned to the CSL in 2013, where he won a CSL Championship in 2015.

The 2011 Canadian Soccer League season was the 14th since its establishment where a total of 28 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on Saturday 6 May 2011, and concluded on 29 October 2011. Toronto Croatia won their fourth championship in a 1–0 victory over Capital City F.C. in the CSL Championship final at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto. The regular season saw SC Toronto claim their second regular season title, while Mississauga Eagles FC B won their first Second Division championship. The season saw an increase in membership to 14 teams the largest number since the 2002 season. The new entries saw the return of professional soccer to the communities of Windsor, Mississauga, and Ottawa.

Mark William Geiger is an American sports administrator and former soccer referee. He is the senior director of match officials at the Professional Referee Organization (PRO), which oversees domestic referees in Major League Soccer (MLS). Geiger previously officiated in MLS and was on the FIFA International Referees List from 2008 to 2019. At the international level, Geiger refereed the 2012 Olympics, the 2013, 2015, and 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cups, and the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups. At the 2014 World Cup, he became the first referee from the United States to officiate a knockout match at a World Cup tournament. Before becoming a full-time referee, Geiger was a high school mathematics teacher.

The 2012 Canadian Soccer League season was the 15th since its establishment where a total of 28 teams from Ontario and Quebec took part in the league. The season began on 5 May 2012, and concluded on 27 October 2012. Toronto Croatia defended their championship in a 1–0 victory over the Montreal Impact Academy in the CSL Championship final at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto. Montreal became the second Quebec club after Trois-Rivières Attak to reach the final, while Toronto added more silverware to their cabinet by winning the double during the regular season. In the Second Division SC Toronto B won their first Second Division championship, and TFC Academy II secured the regular season title.

The Canadian Soccer League Awards is an annual awards ceremony for several individual performances at the end of the season.
