Joseph Alan Vavra (born November 16,1959) is an American professional baseball coach. Vavra previously served as a coach for the Minnesota Twins from 2006 to 2017,and as the Detroit Tigers quality control coach in 2018 and 2019,and hitting coach in 2020.
Vavra graduated in 1978 from Chippewa Falls High School,where he was a captain and MVP baseball player his senior season. He played collegiate baseball for the University of Wisconsin–Stout from 1978 to 1982. He graduated with a degree in industrial technology.
Vavra was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the eighth round (203rd overall) of the 1982 Major League Baseball draft. [1] He played five years in the Dodgers farm system,making it to the AAA level in 1986. He never played in the major leagues due to two injuries. The first happened in his final Triple-A game when a runner's cleat shattered his thumb when Vavra attempted to tag the runner. The second setback was when Vavra fell ill with desert fever (Coccidioidomycosis),a disease that eats at the lungs. Vavra finished the year and had to stop playing.
Beginning in 1987,Vavra coached in the Dodgers' minor league system. While at Yakima,Washington in Class A,he was named Manager of the Year for 1994 and 1996 for the Northwest League after winning the division title in 1994 and the League championship in 1996. Vavra coached for ten years in the minors before moving to the Dodgers' major league staff. He served in special assignments and as a roving coach before becoming the permanent bunting and baserunning coach in 2000.
After a brief stint as the head coach of UW–Stout baseball,Vavra joined the Twins' staff in 2002. On October 27,2005,Vavra was named the Twins' hitting coach. [2]
Vavra attended the 2008 MLB Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium to pitch for Justin Morneau. Morneau beat Josh Hamilton to win the Home Run Derby. [3]
During Vavra's tenure in Minnesota,the Twins consistently ranked among the best in the league for both individual and team hitting stats.[ citation needed ]
In 2012,it was announced that Vavra would be reassigned from the Twins hitting coach to the Twins third base coach and infield instruction coach in 2013. [4] He was the Twins bench coach from 2015 through 2017.
On November 2,2017,Vavra was named the quality control coach for the Detroit Tigers for the 2018 season. [5] Vavra was promoted to hitting coach prior to the 2020 season. [6]
Vavra and his wife Lesa have three sons:Tanner,Treysen and Terrin. His son Tanner has played at Valparaiso University and Treysen plays for the Eastern Illinois University baseball team. Tanner was drafted in the 30th round (890th overall) of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by the Twins. [7] In 2016,Tanner was an infielder for the independent minor-league St. Paul Saints. Terrin was an All-American with the Minnesota Golden Gophers before getting drafted in the third round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft by the Colorado Rockies, [8] who traded him to the Baltimore Orioles in August 2020. Jacque Dewayne Jones is a former Major League Baseball outfielder for the Minnesota Twins,Chicago Cubs,Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins. He also coached for the Washington Nationals.
JoséLuis Cruz Jr.,is a Puerto Rican baseball coach and former outfielder,who is the current head baseball coach for the Rice Owls. He played college baseball at Rice University from 1992 to 1995 and played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 12 seasons from 1997 to 2008. In 2021,he returned to his alma mater,Rice.
Ronald Clyde Gardenhire is an American former professional baseball player,coach,and manager. He played as a shortstop for the New York Mets from 1981 through 1985. After another year playing in the minor leagues,he served as a manager in the Minnesota Twins farm system for three years,then as a coach for the Twins from 1991 through 2001,and then as the Twins' manager from 2002 through 2014,winning the American League Manager of the Year Award in 2010. He then coached for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2017 and managed the Detroit Tigers from 2018 through most of 2020,when he retired from baseball.
Justin Ernest George Morneau is a Canadian former professional baseball first baseman. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Minnesota Twins,Pittsburgh Pirates,Colorado Rockies,and Chicago White Sox. At 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 m) and 220 pounds (100 kg),Morneau was drafted as a catcher by the Twins in 1999. He converted to first base in the minor leagues and made his MLB debut in 2003. Morneau held that position throughout his career and in 2007 became the first Twin since Gary Gaetti in 1987–1988 to hit 30 home runs in consecutive seasons.
William Joseph Haselman is an American professional baseball coach and former player. He played as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 13 seasons between 1990 and 2003. A first-round selection in the 1987 MLB draft,he played for the Texas Rangers,Seattle Mariners,Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. He previously was the bullpen coach and first base coach for the Red Sox and the third base coach for the Los Angeles Angels. He has also served as a manager in Minor League Baseball.
Bruce Matthew Tanner is an American former professional baseball player,coach and current scout. He played as a pitcher in Major League Baseball. As of 2016,he was listed as a Major League scout by the Detroit Tigers,working out of his home city of New Castle. Tanner attended Florida State University;he stood 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and weighed 220 pounds (100 kg) during his active career.
Frederick Wayne Honeycutt,nicknamed "Honey",is an American former professional baseball coach and pitcher. Honeycutt pitched in Major League Baseball (MLB) for six different teams over 21 years,from 1977 to 1997. He pitched in 30 post-season games,including 20 League Championship Series games and seven World Series games,and never lost a game,going 3–0. Honeycutt gave up no runs in the 1988 and 1990 post-seasons,and was a member of the Oakland Athletics' 1989 World Series championship team. He was also the pitching coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006 through 2019.
Terry Lee Steinbach is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher from 1986 to 1999,most notably as a member of the Oakland Athletics team that won three consecutive American League pennants and a World Series championship in 1989. He played his final three seasons with the Minnesota Twins. A three-time All-Star player,Steinbach won the 1988 All-Star Game MVP Award and caught two no-hitters during his career.
John T. Shelby is an American former center fielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played from 1981 to 1991. He began his career as a member of the Baltimore Orioles before later playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. Shelby was a member of two World Series–winning teams:the 1983 Orioles and the 1988 Dodgers. His nickname was "T-Bone" because of his slight frame. He currently is a coach in the Atlanta Braves minor league system.
