John Asimakopoulos (born September 10,1970) is an American sociologist and author. He is a professor of sociology at the Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. Asimakopoulos co-founded the Transformative Studies Institute.
Asimakopoulos attended high school in Athens,Greece. He returned to the United States and received a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics from Rutgers University in 1992. He remained at Rutgers for his master's degrees, receiving an MA in economics in 1993 and an MA in political science in 1994. He went on for a PhD in the sociology program at the CUNY Graduate Center, which he completed in 2000. His doctoral advisor was Paul Attewell, and his thesis title was Comparative Analysis of European and American Working Class Attainments. [1]
After teaching as an adjunct professor at New Jersey and New York area universities,in 2004 he began as an assistant professor of social sciences at the Bronx Community College. [2] He came to public attention in 2006,when the City University of New York refused to renew his contract on the grounds of "lack of collegiality". [3] Asimakopoulos alleged this was a political firing because of his outspoken libertarian socialist ideology. [4] Asimakopoulos filed for arbitration, which he won in 2008,and returned to his position. [3] Asimakopoulos describes himself as a "Scholar-Activist" and "Organic Intellectual". [1]
In 2007,Asimakopoulos co-founded the Transformative Studies Institute (TSI) together with Ali Shehzad Zaidi. Both Asimakopoulos and Zaidi were at the time facing non-renewal of their contracts from Bronx Community College (Asimakopoulos later was reinstated under arbitration). Asimakopoulos has said that he founded TSI as a reaction to this experience. [4] Asimakopoulos serves as executive director of this section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. [5] [6]
TSI publishes the interdisciplinary journal Theory in Action, founded by Asimakopoulos in 2008. [7] [8] It also publishes the Journal of Social Justice, founded in 2011. [9] Asimakopoulos is editor-in-chief of both journals. There is a TSI YouTube channel which hosts the video series "Crushing Capitalism with Dr. Asimakopoulos". [10] [11] TSI states that its mission is to found an interdisciplinary graduate school focused on social problems and social justice. [12]
Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit. Central characteristics of capitalism include capital accumulation, competitive markets, price systems, private property, property rights recognition, voluntary exchange, and wage labor. In a market economy,decision-making and investments are determined by owners of wealth, property,or ability to maneuver capital or production ability in capital and financial markets—whereas prices and the distribution of goods and services are mainly determined by competition in goods and services markets.
Libertarian socialism is an anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist political current that emphasises self-governance and workers' self-management. It is contrasted from other forms of socialism by its rejection of state ownership and from other forms of libertarianism by its rejection of private property. Broadly defined,it includes schools of both anarchism and Marxism,as well as other tendencies that oppose the state and capitalism.
In political science,a revolution is a rapid, fundamental transformation of a society's state, class, ethnic or religious structures. A revolution involves the attempted change in political regimes, substantial mass mobilization, and efforts to force change through non-institutionalized means.
Anti-capitalism is a political ideology and movement encompassing a variety of attitudes and ideas that oppose capitalism. In this sense,anti-capitalists are those who wish to replace capitalism with another type of economic system, such as socialism or communism.
An information society is a society or subculture where the usage, creation, distribution, manipulation and integration of information is a significant activity. Its main drivers are information and communication technologies, which have resulted in rapid growth of a variety of forms of information. Proponents of this theory posit that these technologies are impacting most important forms of social organization, including education, economy, health, government, warfare, and levels of democracy. The people who are able to partake in this form of society are sometimes called either computer users or even digital citizens, defined by K. Mossberger as “Those who use the Internet regularly and effectively”. This is one of many dozen internet terms that have been identified to suggest that humans are entering a new and different phase of society.

Communization theory refers to a tendency on the ultra-left that understands communism as a process that,in a social revolution, immediately begins to replace all capitalist social relations with communist ones. Thus it rejects the role of the dictatorship of the proletariat, which it sees as reproducing capitalism. There exist two broad trends within communization theory:a ‘Marxist’one and an ‘Anarchist’one.

Critical animal studies (CAS) is an interdisciplinary field in the humanities and social sciences and a theory-to-activism global community. It emerged in 2001 with the founding of the Centre for Animal Liberation Affairs by Anthony J. Nocella II and Steven Best, which in 2007 became the Institute for Critical Animal Studies (ICAS). The core interest of CAS is ethical reflection on relations between humans and other animals, firmly grounded in trans-species intersectionality, environmental justice, social justice politics and critical analysis of the underlying role played by the capitalist system. Scholars in the field seek to integrate academic research with political engagement and activism.

Anarchist criminology is a school of thought in criminology that draws on influences and insights from anarchist theory and practice. Building on insights from anarchist theorists including Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Peter Kropotkin, anarchist criminologists' approach to the causes of crime emphasises what they argue are the harmful effects of the state. Anarchist criminologists,a number of whom have produced work in the field since the 1970s,have critiqued the political underpinnings of criminology and emphasised the political significance of forms of crime not ordinarily considered to be political. Anarchists propose the abolition of the state;accordingly, anarchist criminologists tend to argue in favour of forms of non-state justice. The principles and arguments of anarchist criminology share certain features with those of Marxist criminology, critical criminology and other schools of thought within the discipline, while also differing in certain respects.
