John Chandlee Astle (born March 31,1943) is an American politician from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party. He served four terms in the Maryland State Senate and three terms in the Maryland House of Delegates representing Maryland's district 30 in Anne Arundel County. [2]
Astle was born in Charles Town,West Virginia,and grew up in Barboursville. He graduated in 1966 from Marshall University in Huntington,West Virginia,and attended the Catholic University of America. [2]
He joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961 and received a commission as an officer in the Marine Corps through its Platoon Leaders Class program upon graduation from Marshall. He was a Naval Aviator flying helicopters and left active duty with the rank of captain. He also flew the presidential helicopter for three and a half years. [2]
He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves as a colonel after 30 years of service. [2] He saw combat in Vietnam,earning 34 Air Medals and 2 Purple Hearts. He was recalled to active duty for Desert Storm.
Astle was originally elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1982. He was elected to the State Senate in 1994 and was Vice-Chair of the Senate Finance Committee from 2003 to 2019. [3] [2]
Astle ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Annapolis in 2017,losing in the Democratic primary. [4] [5] Astle also ran for mayor in 1981,losing by 243 votes in the general election. [3]

John A. Giannetti Jr. is an American politician and former attorney from Maryland. As a Democrat,Giannetti was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1998 for District 13B and served from 1999 to 2003. In 2002 he was elected into the State Senate for District 21,which covers parts of Anne Arundel County and Prince George's County. He was defeated in the 2006 Democratic primary and general elections by former member of the Maryland House of Delegates and U.S. Ambassador to Romania James Rosapepe.
Herbert H. McMillan is a Republican former member of the Maryland House of Delegates,representing District 30 in Anne Arundel County,MD from 2003 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2019. He served alongside Democrat Michael E. Busch and Republican Ron George. In 2006 he challenged District 30 Senator John Astle,a Democrat,who defeated him 53 percent to 47 percent. In 2022,McMillan unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for Anne Arundel County executive.

On March 17,2020,Governor Larry Hogan announced that the primary election would be postponed from April 28 to June 2 due to coronavirus concerns. On March 26,the Maryland Board of Elections met to consider whether in-person voting should be used for June's primary,and recommended that voting in June be mail-in only.
