John Dixon (died 1999) was an Australian screenwriter and director best known for his association with Geoff Burrowes. [1]

Career

Dixon served in the Australian army as a translator with the occupying forces in Japan. He returned to Melbourne and obtained an Arts Degree at Melbourne University then travelled to London, where he trained as a film editor and worked for Technicolour and Elstree Studios. He moved back to Australia and worked for Channel 7 as a TV director on a number of shows. He started World of Sport with Ron Casey directing the first two hundred episodes. He moved to Channel Nine and directed a series of documentaries. [2]

In 1963, he was one of the first Westerners allowed to film inside communist China, and made a documentary Red China. [3] [4]

Dixon formed Cambridge Films with some colleagues and made commercials for a number of companies. In 1967 he directed the TV commercial for VB Bitter which used a voice over by John Meillon and theme song from The Magnificent Seven which went on to become one of the longest running ads on Australian TV. [5] He was also involved in the establishment of the Sunbury Pop Festival.

He had been writing a script about the Anzacs of World War I which he developed with Geoff Burrowes. This led to them making a number of films and mini-series together.

Dixon was a friend of Phillip Adams who described him as such:

All the years I knew him John talked about Australia with a passion that, sadly, sounds increasingly anachronistic. He was the sort of patriot that would eat a eucalypt. But he wasn't all that interested in multiculturalism, preferring to celebrate a multi-ethnic Australia where people would sign up for the local set of values which he saw as an amalgam of humour and high-mindedness, of democratic spirit and egalitarianism. Perhaps the sort of Australia that Paul Hogan celebrated before he lost his way in Los Angeles. There's a scene in The Goons where the famous Eccles arrives in London in the middle of summer, surrounded by his own personal snow storm, which enables him to drive his huskies through Trafalgar Square. John Dixon did that with his Australianness. While it wasn't conscious or calculated, wherever he went and whatever he was doing, he brought the whole Dorothea Mackellar, Banjo Paterson, Chips Rafferty, Henry Lawson package with him. I reckon that if he cut himself shaving, you'd have seen gum tree sap trickling from the cut. [6]

The Man from Snowy River is a 1982 Australian Western drama film based on the Banjo Paterson poem "The Man from Snowy River". The film had a cast including Kirk Douglas in a dual role as the brothers Harrison and Spur, Jack Thompson as Clancy, Tom Burlinson as Jim Craig, Sigrid Thornton as Harrison's daughter Jessica, Terence Donovan as Jim's father Henry Craig, and Chris Haywood as Curly. Both Burlinson and Thornton later reprised their roles in the 1988 sequel, The Man from Snowy River II. The 1988 sequel film was later released in the United States by Walt Disney Pictures under the title Return to Snowy River and in the United Kingdom under the title The Untamed.

Shane Jacobson Australian actor, director, writer, and comedian

Shane Jacobson is an Australian actor, director, writer, and comedian, best known as the "Dunny Man" for his performances as the eponymous character Kenny Smyth, a plumber working for a portable toilet rental company, in the 2006 film Kenny and the spin-off TV series, Kenny's World. In 2006, he won the Australian Film Institute's Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for that performance. In 2017 and 2018 he presented Little Big Shots, on the Seven Network, based on the American series of the same title. In 2019, Jacobson became a judge on Australia's Got Talent.

Helen Morse is an English-born Australian actress who has appeared in films, on television and on stage. She won the AFI (AACTA) Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the 1976 film Caddie, and starred in the 1981 miniseries A Town Like Alice. Her other film appearances include Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Agatha (1979), Far East (1982) and The Eye of the Storm (2011).

The series follows the lives of a group of young Australian men who enlist in the 8th Battalion (Australia) of the First Australian Imperial Force in 1914, fighting first at Gallipoli in 1915, and then on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.

The Burrowes Film Group was a short lived Australian production company established in the wake of the success of The Man from Snowy River (1982) and Anzacs (1985). It was named after Geoff Burrowes. Other key personnel included John Dixon and George T. Miller.
