Western Michigan University is a public research university in Kalamazoo,Michigan. It was initially established as Western State Normal School in 1903 by Governor Aaron T. Bliss for the training of teachers. In 1957,G. Mennen Williams signed a bill into law that made Western a university and gave the school its current name of Western Michigan University.
James Bernard Machen is an American university professor and administrator. Machen is a native of Mississippi,and earned several academic degrees before becoming a university administrator and president. Machen had been the president of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City,Utah and the University of Florida in Gainesville,Florida. He also sits on the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute's Board of Trustees. On June 8,2012,Machen announced he would be stepping down as president in 2013. However,Machen was asked by state and university leaders to stay on,as the school had not yet found a suitable replacement. He was finally succeeded by W. Kent Fuchs on January 1,2015.

Diether H. Haenicke was president of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo,Michigan from 1985 to 1998,and again from 2006 to 2007. A large building on campus,Haenicke Hall,is named for him.

Elson S. Floyd was an American educator who served as the 10th president of the four-campus Washington State University from May 21,2007 to June 20,2015. Floyd was also the first African American to be named president of Washington State University. Floyd also served as president of the University of Missouri System and president of Western Michigan University. Floyd was the Chairman of the Pac-12 CEO Group.
Michael J. Hogan is an American historian who served as president of the University of Connecticut (2007–2010) and president of the University of Illinois System (2010–2012). He subsequently became a distinguished professor of history at the University of Illinois at Springfield.
James Carmichael Renick was an American academic,who served as Chancellor of University of Michigan–Dearborn and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Renick served also as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Jackson State University in Jackson Mississippi. He resigned this position on October 5,2015.
The Western Herald is the student newspaper of Western Michigan University,in Kalamazoo,Michigan. It began printing in 1916. The paper was known as the Western Normal Herald from 1916 to 1927. It provides news about the students,campus events and activities,as well as sporting events,opinion sections,and local culture and politics.
The Sunseeker Solar Car Project,Sunseeker for short,is Western Michigan University's solar car team. Each vehicle is designed,built,maintained,and raced by students. Sunseeker has competed in all of the American Solar Challenge events,going back to 1990.

He previously served as the 18th President of the University of Oregon and as a law professor at the University of Oregon School of Law. He is the former Dean and currently the Harry N. Wyatt Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Chicago Law School. On August 11,2022 he was appointed president of Northwestern University by the Board of Trustees. He was elected President of the University of Oregon on April 14,2015 by the University of Oregon Board of Trustees. He assumed UO's presidency on July 1,2015 and was formally invested on June 1,2016. Schill is the author of three books and numerous articles,and focuses his scholarship in the areas of real estate,housing policy,and discrimination in the housing market. His casebook,Property,co-authored with Jesse Dukeminier,James Krier,Greg Alexander,and Lior Strahilevitz is the best-selling casebook used in American law schools.
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is a private medical school in Kalamazoo,Michigan. WMed was established in 2012 and confers the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree,as well as Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree and the Master of Science in Medical Engineering degree. WMed is a collaboration between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals,Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare. The inaugural class of 54 students started in August 2014.
Steven H. Tallant is the former president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville,a part of the Texas A&M University System. He was succeeded by Dr. Mark A. Hussey in January 2019. He is a member of the executive committee for the Texas Council of Public Universities Presidents and Chancellors and a past chair of the Lone Star Council of Presidents. Tallant has been a member of several off-site review committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College. In addition,he is a board member for KEDT/South Texas Public Broadcasting System,Inc.
