John Mark Harrington (born 1956) is the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for the U.S. State of Minnesota,appointed by Governor Tim Walz. He has served since January 2019. Harrington previously served as Chief of the Saint Paul Police Department (2004-2010) and Chief of the Metro Transit Police (2012-2019) in Minneapolis–Saint Paul. He is a former member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 67,which includes portions of the city of Saint Paul in Ramsey County. A Democrat,he is a teacher and manager at Metropolitan State University in Saint Paul.
John Harrington grew up in Chicago until he finished high school at De La Salle Institute. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in Hanover,New Hampshire,where he majored in Far East religion and minored in Chinese. He earned a master's degree in education from the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul,Minnesota. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy,the National Executive Institute,and the Harvard Senior Management Institute. [1] Harrington began his police career in 1977 at the Saint Paul Police Department,working his way up the chain of command from patrol officer. He was selected as chief of police in 2004 and served in that role until 2010. As chief of police,he addressed some of Saint Paul’s most difficult problems,developing innovative programs that greatly reduced domestic violence and gang involvement. He also increased the diversity of the police department by 40% and worked with the private sector to increase police resources. [2] [3]
Harrington was elected to the Senate in 2010,running after Senator Mee Moua decided not to seek reelection. Before winning the November general election,he won the August primary against eight challengers. He was a member of the Education,the Judiciary and Public Safety,and the Local Government and Elections committees. In addition,he was appointed to the Senate Ethics Committee and Redistricting Committee. His special legislative concerns included public safety,education,and employment. [1] [4] Harrington vacated his seat weeks before the November 2012 election and was named chief of the Metro Transit Police. [5]
Harrington was a member of the Saint Paul Police Department from 1977 to 2010,serving as its chief from 2004 to 2010. [1] [6]
In September 2012,Harrington was sworn in as chief of Metro Transit Police in Minneapolis–Saint Paul. [7] [8]
After retiring from the Saint Paul Police Department,Harrington became the President and CEO of Ujamaa Place,a nonprofit organization in Saint Paul that serves African American men who are economically disadvantaged and have experienced repeated cycles of failure. [9] His name recognition helped the organization raise over $1 million. [10] Harrington stepped down as CEO in 2012 but continues to serve as chair of the organization's board. [8]

Steven A. "Steve" Sviggum is a Minnesota politician,a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents,and an executive assistant to and communications director for the Republican caucus in the Minnesota Senate. A former Speaker and member of the Minnesota House of Representatives,Sviggum represented District 28B in the southeastern part of the state. The area was known as District 25A until the 1982 legislative redistricting,and then as District 26A until the 1992 redistricting,and has included all or portions of Dakota,Dodge,Goodhue,Olmsted,Steele,Wabasha,Waseca and Winona counties.
Satveer Singh Chaudhary is an American criminal and immigration lawyer. He is also a politician and a former member of the Minnesota State Senate and the Minnesota House of Representatives serving from 1996 to 2010. During his fourteen-year tenure,Chaudhary represented portions of Anoka and Ramsey counties in the northern Minneapolis and St Paul metropolitan area. The Senate District at the time of his departure from politics was known as Senate District 50. However,Chaudhary also represented the area in the Minnesota House from 1997-2000 as District 52A;and in the Senate from 2001 to 2002 as Senate District 52. While in office,Chaudhary served as a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party,was the first Asian American legislator in Minnesota history. He was also the first South Asian senator in American history and for a time was the highest ranking political official of South Asian descent,as well as one of the youngest senators in that state's history.
Richard J. Cohen is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 64,which includes portions of the city of Saint Paul in Ramsey County.
David Scott Dibble is an American politician serving as a member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),he represents District 61,which includes portions of Minneapolis in Hennepin County.
LeRoy A. Stumpf is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL),he represented District 1,which included all or portions of Kittson,Marshall,Pennington,Polk,Red Lake and Roseau counties in the northwestern part of the state.

Chris Gerlach is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 37,which included portions of the cities of Apple Valley,Burnsville and Rosemount in Dakota County,which is located in the southeastern Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Linda J. Scheid was a Minnesota politician and a member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 46,which includes portions of the northwestern suburbs of Hennepin County in the Twin Cities metro area. A Democrat,she was first elected to the Senate in 1996,and was re-elected in 2000,2002,2006 and 2010. Prior to the 2002 redistricting,the area was known as District 47. She died of cancer on June 15,2011. Her seat was won in special election on October 18,2011 by Senator Chris Eaton.
Leo T. Foley was an American politician who was a member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 49 from 1997 to 2003,and District 47 from 2003 to 2011,which includes portions of Anoka and Hennepin counties in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area. A Democrat,he was first elected to the Senate in 1996,and was re-elected in 2000,2002 and 2006. Prior to the 2002 legislative redistricting,the area was known as District 49. He was unseated by Republican Benjamin Kruse in the 2010 general election.
Julianne E. Ortman is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota,she represented District 47,which included portions of Carver County in the southwestern Twin Cities metropolitan area. She was a candidate in the 2014 United States Senate election in Minnesota until she was eliminated at the state convention.

Matthew D. "Matt" Bostrom,DPA is a member of the law faculty at the Centre for Criminology at Oxford University England. From January 2011 to 2017 he served as the 21st Sheriff of Ramsey County,an urban county encompassing Saint Paul,and the state capital of Minnesota. Bostrom was elected Sheriff replacing four-term incumbent Bob Fletcher. Fletcher was ultimately reelected to the position following Bostrom's departure.
Ujamaa Place is a non-profit organization that was launched in 2009 to fill a gap in social welfare programming and services for African-American men between the ages of 17 and 28 in St. Paul,Minnesota. Ujamaa Place took over the services offered by a previous form of the program,Awali Place,when Awali lost its funding due to 2009 budget cuts. Ujamaa Place received its non-profit status in 2010.
