John Daniel Mallee (pronounced "MAY lee";born May 5,1969) is an American professional baseball coach and former player. [1] He is the current assistant hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB). As an MiLB player,Mallee was a shortstop and second baseman. [1] He has previously been the hitting coach of the Florida Marlins,Houston Astros,Chicago Cubs,and Philadelphia Phillies. [2]
Mallee was born in Chicago,Illinois. He attended Chicago State University and the University of Illinois at Chicago,where he majored in kinesiology. [3]
Mallee was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round of the 1991 amateur draft,out of University of Illinois at Chicago. He played in minor league baseball from 1991 to 1992 in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system,for Rookie League Martinsville (1991) and Single-A Spartanburg (1992). [1] [3] [4] Mallee hit .208/.313/.257 with 8 stolen bases and 28 RBI in 115 career minor league games,playing 95 games at shortstop and 20 games at second base. [1]
He began his coaching career with Milwaukee as the hitting coach for Beloit (A,1996-97;99),Stockton (A,1998),and Huntsville (AA,2000). [3] He was then the minor league hitting coach for the Montreal Expos at Ottawa (AAA,2001). [3]
He then served as the Florida Marlins minor league hitting coordinator for nine seasons,from 2002 to 2010,and their major league hitting coach from 2010 to 2011. [5] [3]
On October 19,2012,the Astros announced that Mallee would be their hitting coach for 2012,working under Bo Porter. [6] He was their major league hitting coach from 2013 to 2014. [3]
On October 9,2014,he was named by the Chicago Cubs as their major league hitting coach,succeeding Bill Mueller. [7] On October 26,2017,the Cubs announced that Mallee had been released from his contract and Chili Davis was named as his replacement. [8]
On November 10,2017,he was hired as the hitting coach of the Philadelphia Phillies under manager Gabe Kapler. [9] On August 13,2019,after a slump in which the Phillies fell from first place to fourth place in the NL East,he was replaced by former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. [10] [11]
He was hired by the Los Angeles Angels as their assistant hitting coach prior to the 2020 season. [12] Following the 2022 season,the Angels stated that Mallee would not be returning to a coaching position with the team. [13] [14]
He married Candy Wiedeman in 1995,and has two sons,John III and Austin. [3]

Gary Nathaniel Matthews Sr.,nicknamed "Sarge",is an American former professional baseball left fielder,who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). After his playing days,Matthews was a color commentator for Philadelphia Phillies broadcasts. He is the father of former big league outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. The Matthews are one of seven father/son combinations in Cubs history;another son,Delvon,was a member of Milwaukee's Minor League Baseball (MiLB) system in 2000–2001.
Dale Curtis Sveum is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) player and manager. He most recently served as the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals. As a player,Sveum saw action in 12 major league seasons between 1986 and 1999. He was a member of the Milwaukee Brewers,Philadelphia Phillies,Chicago White Sox,Oakland Athletics,Seattle Mariners,Pittsburgh Pirates,and New York Yankees. Following his playing career,Sveum managed in minor league baseball for several seasons before becoming an MLB coach. Sveum briefly served as manager of the Brewers in 2008 during his tenure as hitting coach for the team. He was later named manager of the Cubs after the 2011 season and served for two seasons. His cousin is former Blue Jays All-Star John Olerud.
Charles Fuqua Manuel Jr. is an American former professional baseball player,coach,and manager. During his playing career,he appeared over parts of six Major League Baseball seasons for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers,before playing another six seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Yakult Swallows and Kintetsu Buffaloes. Over four successive seasons in NPB,Manuel hit at least .312 with 37 home runs each season and won the 1979 Pacific League Most Valuable Player Award.
James Leroy Thomas was an American first baseman and right fielder,coach and front-office executive in Major League Baseball (MLB) who played for six teams from 1961 to 1968,most notably the Los Angeles Angels,then went on to a successful tenure as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Traded to the Angels one month after the expansion franchise began play in 1961,he tied for third in Rookie of the Year voting after batting .285 with 24 home runs and 70 runs batted in (RBI),primarily playing in the outfield. The following year,he was named to the American League (AL) All-Star team after shifting to first base,and appeared in both All-Star games played that year as a pinch hitter and late-inning defensive replacement. He finished the year with career highs in batting (.290),home runs (26) and RBI (104),but a sharp decline in 1963 led to his being traded to the Boston Red Sox in mid-1964,the first of four trades before the 1968 season.
JoséRosario Domec Cardenal is a Cuban American former professional baseball player and coach. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder from 1963 to 1980,most prominently as a member of the Chicago Cubs,with whom he established himself as a fan favorite for his powerful hitting and his strong throwing arm.
