John Schickel (born March 29,1954) is an American Republican politician. He is a member of the Kentucky State Senate,being first elected in 2008. [1] [2] He is not running for reelection in 2024.
Schickel earned an M.P.A. degree from Northern Kentucky University. [3] A retired law enforcement officer, [3] he served as a Florence police officer for over a decade,the Boone County jailer from 1987 through 2001,and a U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky from 2002 through 2008. Senator Schickel has filed suit to overturn a $1000 (one thousand dollar) limit on undisclosed gifts to elected officials in Kentucky—as a violation of the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. [6]
The Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution established the direct election of United States senators in each state. The amendment supersedes Article I,Section 3,Clauses 1 and 2 of the Constitution,under which senators were elected by state legislatures. It also alters the procedure for filling vacancies in the Senate,allowing for state legislatures to permit their governors to make temporary appointments until a special election can be held.

John White Stevenson was the 25th governor of Kentucky and represented the state in both houses of the U.S. Congress. After briefly practicing law in Mississippi,he relocated to Covington,Kentucky,and was elected county attorney. After serving in the Kentucky legislature,he was chosen as a delegate to the state's third constitutional convention in 1849 and was one of three commissioners charged with revising its code of laws,a task finished in 1854. A Democrat,he was elected to two consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives where he supported several proposed compromises to avert the Civil War and blamed the Radical Republicans for their failure.
