Johnny Q. Public (sometimes stylized as johnny Q. public) was a Christian rock band from Springfield, Missouri that formed in 1994. Although their sound was wholly modern, it was influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Cream. [2] In addition to their music, they were known for their charismatic theology, which they would dramatically display through audience participation at their live shows. [3]

History

When Johnny Q. Public signed to Gotee Records, its members were between the ages of fifteen and twenty-three. [3] [4] Their signing came after producing a demo with Steve Griffith. [4] The band's debut studio album, Extra*Ordinary, was released in 1995 and garnered the band mainstream distribution through Elektra Records. [5] In 2000, vocalist Dan Fritz referred to the period after releasing Extra*Ordinary as being a "whirlwind of craziness". [6] Their single "Body Be" gained the band national exposure when its music video, directed by Steven L. Weaver, was picked up by MTV. The music video was later included on the Gotee Records video compilation The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly: Video Vault in 2003 while the song was included on the Gotee: 10 Years Brand New compilation in 2004. [7] [8] Extra*Ordinary sold close to 50,000 copies. [9]

Johnny Q. Public toured for three years before being able to pursue a second album, and during that time the band experienced some personnel changes. Around 1998, guitarist Oran Thornton married Christian artist Miss Angie, sister of guitarist Shawn Turner, and moved on to a band called Flick. Drummer Brian DuVall also left and was replaced by Nathan McCorkle, former drummer for Morella's Forest.

Johnny Q. Public's second studio album, Welcome to Earth, was released through both Gotee and Roadrunner Records. [6] The album was released on September 26, 2000 and its sound shifted toward pop with hints of hard rock. HM magazine likened it to the Newsboys, stating that the band could easily receive radio play in both Christian and mainstream markets. [10] In support, they toured with Bleach and Skillet. [11] The song "Move" was released as a single.

Johnny Q. Public disbanded in mid-2001. [12]

2015 Reunion Concert

Johnny Q. Public had a one-time reunion concert at Cartoons Oyster Bar in Springfield, Missouri on May 22, 2015; the show incorporated all the rotating touring members and line-up changes. [13]

Jyro Xhan is the stage/pen name of Filipino American musician GD La Villa. He lives in California. He is a singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist and keyboard player. He has been in several bands such as Jyradelix, Cush, Juggernautz, but most notably Mortal and Fold Zandura. He was the main songwriter and lead singer for both bands. He first used his pen name in 1988 on a demo tape but spelled it "Gyro" until the release of Fathom where it became Jyro. He is married to Carla Joy Phillips. The title track from Mortal's 1995 album Pura is dedicated to her.

Project 86 is the debut album of the American band Project 86. It was released on June 16, 1998 on BEC Recordings, the Christian imprint of Tooth & Nail Records. This album established Project 86 as one of the more promising hardcore/metal groups in the Christian music scene. According to one critic, Project 86 became "one of the few Christian acts to gain exposure to the general market" by the turn of the millennium. The album sold over 30,000 copies before the release of the band's second album in the year 2000.

DigHayZoose was a Christian funk and modern rock band from Kansas City, Missouri. The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music describes them as "One of the first Christian alternative rock bands of the 1990s". Their name, when spoken, is audibly similar to saying "Dig Jesus" in Spanish.

Grammatrain is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington that formed in 1994. The band was active in the Christian rock industry during the 1990s. Grammatrain disbanded in 1998 and reunited in 2009.

Squad Five-O is an American punk rock band from Savannah, Georgia no longer formally touring or recording, but rather only performing occasional weekend concerts. Like their initial ska-punk stylings, their name was derived from a cross between the television shows Hawaii Five-O and The Mod Squad. Between 1997 and 2006 the band grew lyrically and in popularity, and also shifted its style significantly. Over the course of their career they moved from a small indie Christian label to the major label Capitol Records and released five albums in the process.

Mortal was a Christian industrial/dance band fronted by Jerome Fontamillas and Jyro Xhan. Both members went on to found the alternative rock group Fold Zandura, and for a time were members of both bands simultaneously. The band is known for its lyrical intelligence, incorporating advanced theology with what has been billed as "Industrial Praise and Worship." According to CCM Magazine "Mortal has had a much greater influence... on industrial music than its modest output would suggest."

Officer Negative was a Christian punk band from Ventura. Formed in 1995 and initially disbanded in 2000, the band released two albums and an EP on Screaming Giant Records. They played old-school punk, and though their music never appeared in a polished form, it was said to "never hold back the passion." Following a period of reformation they reappeared as The Death Campaign and toured until 2004.

The Miscellaneous was a 1990s alternative rock band composed of members from Europe and the United States. The band was fronted by a male and a female vocalist, and produced music that is said to "transcend the boundaries" of its genre in creativity. CCM magazine likened their music to that of Sixpence None the Richer, Jars of Clay and Out of the Grey.

Every Day Life, later simply known as EDL, was a Christian rapcore group. The band became identified with the straight edge movement, which advocates abstinence from sex, drugs and tobacco.

Line in the Sand is the third and final full-length album by Texas melodic hardcore band Close Your Eyes, released on October 29, 2013, through Victory Records. It is the band's only album featuring lead vocalist Sam Robinson, formerly of Blessed by a Broken Heart.
