The 14th Johor State election will be held on 09 May 2018. The previous state election was held on 5 May 2013. The state assemblymen is elected to 5 years term each.
The Johor State Legislative Assembly would automatically dissolve on 20 June 2018, the fifth anniversary of the first sitting, and elections must be held within sixty days (two months) of the dissolution (on or before 20 August 2018, with the date to be decided by the Election Commission), unless dissolved prior to that date by the Head of State (Sultan of Johor) on the advice of the Head of Government (Menteri Besar of Johor).
The Johor State Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Malaysian state of Johor. It is composed of 56 members who are elected from single-member constituencies throughout the state. Elections are held no more than five years apart, along with elections to the federal parliament and other state assemblies.
The Sultan of Johor is a hereditary seat and the sovereign ruler of the Malaysian state of Johor. In the past, the sultan held absolute power over the state and was advised by a bendahara. Currently, the role of bendahara has been taken over by chief minister with the constitutional monarchy system via Johor State Constitution. The Sultan is the constitutional head of state of Johor. The Sultan has own independent military force Royal Johor Military Force. The Sultan is also the Head of Islam in Johor state.

The National Front is a political coalition in Malaysia that was founded in 1973 as a coalition of right-wing and centre parties. They are currently the largest opposition coalition in the country's Dewan Rakyat.
The United Malays National Organisation is Malaysia's main opposition political party. It is a founding member of the Barisan Nasional coalition which, with its predecessor the Alliance, had been the government of Malaysia and dominated the country's politics from independence until 2018. Until then, all of Malaysia's Prime Ministers had been members of UMNO, until Mahathir Mohamad became the first prime minister from Pakatan Harapan, and the first prime minister to have tenures with two different parties.
Pakatan Harapan have decided to contest all 56 seats in Johor. Malaysian United Indigenous Party (PPBM) will contest in 18 seats while the Democratic Action Party (DAP) will have 14 seats. People's Justice Party (PKR) and the National Trust Party (AMANAH) will contest 12 seats each. [1]
The Alliance of Hope is a political coalition in Malaysia. It is a successor to Pakatan Rakyat. It was established in 2015 as an opposition to the former-ruling Barisan Nasional. It is the largest bloc in the Dewan Rakyat and is the current ruling party of Malaysia. The coalition is allied with the Sabah Heritage Party (WARISAN) and the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) in the state of Sabah. At the state level, the coalition is the largest party in 8 of 13 state legislative assemblies and forms the government in the states of Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor and Sabah. Pakatan Harapan also form a government with two-thirds majority in the states of Penang, Selangor and Johor.
Malaysian United Indigenous Party or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, is a nationalist political party in Malaysia formed on 8 September 2016. The party is led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as Chairman and Muhyiddin Yassin as President. Mukhriz Mahathir, Chief Minister of Kedah, is the party Deputy-President. Other founding members of the party include United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) rebel group Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia, chairperson and former Teluk Kemang UMNO branch chief Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman, former Langkawi UMNO delegate Anina Saadudin, and former Bendang Baru UMNO youth chief Akhramsyah Sanusi. It is a component party of the government coalition in Malaysia, the Pakatan Harapan (PH).
The People's Justice Party is a centre-left multiracial political party in Malaysia, formed in 2003 by a merger of the National Justice Party and the older Malaysian People's Party (PRM). The party was led by Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and increased its parliamentary representation from one seat to 31 seats in the 2008 general election, until the five-year political ban imposed on former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was lifted on 14 April 2008. The party is now the largest party in the Pakatan Harapan coalition that formed the government after a 60-year-long tenure by the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2018 election. It enjoys strong support from urban states such as Selangor, Penang and Johor.
Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) will compete for 40 seats. [2]
