Brig. Gen. Jonathan D. George served in a variety of military and government positions. These include Director of Strategic Capabilities Policy, a member of the National Security Council, and as a national security adviser to the President from March 2009 until February 2011.

In the May 2012 primary George unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Congressman in Indiana's 9th Congressional district.

Early life and education

George was raised on a farm near Bedford Indiana, playing a variety of sports in high school. He is a direct relative of Comanche Chief Quanah Parker, and as such is a member of the Comanche Nation. George lived out of his truck while saving up money for his own farm in the early 1980s.

George received his bachelor's degree in agronomy and education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1979. He went on to receive a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1990. [1]

He served as a White House Fellow during the Ronald Reagan Administration in the Department of Agriculture.

George stated that he joined the air force because of the Iranian Hostage Crisis. [2] George became a commissioned officer in 1981 and served as a command pilot accumulating more than 4,000 flying hours. [1] He flew in classified U-2 spy planes during his career.

He was promoted to Brigadier General in 2006, managing over 12,000 personal and a budget of 3 billion dollars before turning down the promotion of major general before his retirement. [2]

During his military career, he rose to become a prominent officer who helped to lead transition assistance issues in Afghanistan. [2] He also served on the National Security Council staff as an advisor on key strategic policy issues to President Barack Obama. [2]

In the Air Force he was awarded several awards for acts of bravery, including his saving of a disabled U-2 plane while risking his own life. He retired from the military in February 2011 and returned to Indiana.

2012 Congressional campaign

In October 2011 George, a Democrat, announced his bid for Indiana's 9th District Democratic Congressional primary. He was opposed by John W. Tilford of Bloomington, Robert Winningham of Charlestown, John Griffin Miller of Corydon, and Shelli Yoder of Bloomington. [3]

George lost the primary to Shelli Yoder, who in turn lost to incumbent Congressman Todd Young in the general election in the newly redrawn 9th Congressional district. [4]

Robert Michael Gates is an American intelligence analyst and university president who served as the 22nd United States secretary of defense from 2006 to 2011. He was originally appointed by president George W. Bush and was retained for service by President Barack Obama. Gates began his career serving as an officer in the United States Air Force but was quickly recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Gates served for 26 years in the CIA and the National Security Council, and was Director of Central Intelligence under President George H. W. Bush. After leaving the CIA, Gates became president of Texas A&M University and was a member of several corporate boards. Gates served as a member of the Iraq Study Group, the bipartisan commission co-chaired by James A. Baker III and Lee H. Hamilton, that studied the lessons of the Iraq War.

Tim Roemer American politician

Timothy John Roemer is an American diplomat and politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1991 to 2003 as a Democrat from Indiana's 3rd congressional district. Subsequently, he was the president of the Center for National Policy (CNP), a Washington, D.C.-based national security think tank. He served as U.S. Ambassador to India from 2009 to 2011. Roemer currently serves on the advisory board of Washington, D.C. based non-profit America Abroad Media.

Ciro Rodriguez

Ciro Davis Rodriguez is an American politician and social worker who served as a U.S. Representative for Texas's 23rd congressional district, serving from 2007 until 2011. The district stretches from El Paso in the west to San Antonio in the east, a distance of some 500 miles (800 km). He previously represented the neighboring 28th congressional district from 1997 to 2005, and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1987 to 1997. Francis Xavier "Frank" McCloskey was a six-term Democratic representative from Indiana from January 3, 1983, to January 3, 1995. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Bloomington, Indiana after receiving an undergraduate and J.D. degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He was the Democratic nominee for a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1970. Frank McCloskey worked as a reporter for The Indianapolis Star, the Bloomington Herald-Telephone, and the City News Bureau of Chicago.

Jill Long Thompson American politician and academic

Jill Lynette Long Thompson is an American politician, educator, and author. A former Congresswoman from Indiana, she is the author of The Character of American Democracy, published by Indiana University Press in September 2020. From 2015 to 2020 she taught ethics as a Visiting Clinical Associate Professor at the Kelley School of Business and the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington and during the 2020-2021 academic year she served as a visiting scholar with the Ostrom Workshop, also at Indiana University. Shelli Yoder American politician

Shelli Renee Yoder is an American politician serving on the Indiana Senate for Monroe County, Indiana from the 40th District. A former Miss Indiana and a Miss America 1993 contestant, Yoder has held positions at a number of nonprofit organizations. She was the Democratic nominee for the United States House of Representatives in Indiana's 9th congressional district in 2012 and 2016. However, she was defeated both times by Republicans: first by Todd Young and then by Trey Hollingsworth. In June 2020, she won the Democratic primary for Indiana state senate district 40. He is a member of the Republican Party. Hollingsworth serves on the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee. John Chastain Zody is an American public servant, educator, and politician who served as the Chair of the Indiana Democratic Party from March 2013 to March 2021. Zody is also an adjunct instructor at the Indiana University O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, teaching classes on electoral law and processes. Zody was previously the Great Lakes-Mid Atlantic Political Director on the 2012 re-election campaign of President Barack Obama, and formerly served as Chief of Staff for U.S. Representative Baron Hill from Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District from 2009-2011. On November 14, 2019, Zody announced that he would be a 2020 Democratic candidate for Indiana State Senate in the 40th District, which includes most of Monroe County, Indiana.
