Jorge Luis Espat (born September 10, 1959) is a Belizean academic and politician. Espat is a former member People's United Party area representative in the Belize House of Representatives. He served on the faculty of St. John's College in Belize City as an instructor and later as president.

Political career

Espat was elected to the Belize House from Freetown in a January 1993 by-election. [1] He was elected to a full term later in 1993 and re-elected in 1998. He served as a minister in the Said Musa government until resigning a few years later after alleging corruption within his own party. Espat was not a candidate for re-election in 2003.

Espat is famously known in Belize for claiming with regards to the PUP, "We are messed up!"[ citation needed ] In 2013 Espat joined the opposition United Democratic Party. [2]

Education

Espat attended Holy Redeemer Primary School followed by St. John's College, Belize City; Fordham University, New York City; and Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Espat also served as vice principal of Excelsior High School from 1993 to 1995. Espat now teaches economics at Saint John's College Junior College in Belize City.

Family

Espat is the brother of former PUP Albert Area Rep. Mark Espat. [2] He is also cousin to the current area representative for the PUP Luke Espat.

Johnny Briceño

Juan Antonio Briceño, commonly known as Johnny Briceño, is a Belizean politician who is also the prime minister of Belize since 12 November 2020, and the leader of the People's United Party (PUP) since 2016. He was Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2011 and from 2016 to 2020. From 1998 to 2007, he served as Deputy Prime Minister under Prime Minister Said Musa.

Ralph Henry Fonseca is a Belizean politician and a member of the People's United Party.

House of Representatives (Belize)

The House of Representatives of Belize is one of two chambers of the National Assembly, the other being the Senate. It was created under the 1981 constitution. Members are commonly called "Area Representatives."

2003 Belizean general election

General elections were held in Belize on 5 March 2003. Belizeans elected 29 members to the House of Representatives for a term of five years. The result was a victory for the ruling People's United Party (PUP), which won 22 of the 29 seats.

2008 Belizean general election

General elections were held in Belize on 7 February 2008. Beginning with this election, Belizeans elected 31 members to the House of Representatives of Belize instead of 29. In what was considered an upset, the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) won the election with 25 out of 31 seats; the ruling People's United Party won six.

Francis William Fonseca is a Belizean politician who served as leader of the People's United Party (PUP) and as Leader of the Opposition of Belize from 2011 to 2016. First elected to the Belize House of Representatives from the Belize City-based Freetown constituency in 2003, Fonseca served as Attorney General and Minister of Education, Culture and Labour in Prime Minister Said Musa's cabinet until February 2008, when the PUP lost the general election to the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). Fonseca was one of only six PUP representatives nationwide to retain his seat in the National Assembly in the 2008 election.

Peter Eden Martinez is a Belizean politician and member of the United Democratic Party. He served a single term as Area Representative in the House of Representatives from the Toledo East constituency from 2008 to 2012.

John Saldivar (politician)

John Birchman Saldivar is a Belizean politician. A member of the United Democratic Party, Saldivar has represented the Belmopan constituency in the Belize House of Representatives from its creation in 2008 until his defeat in the 2020 general election. He was previously Area Representative for Cayo South.

Rodwell Ferguson is a Belizean politician and a former Cabinet Minister of the Said Musa Administration. He is a member of the People's United Party (PUP) and has served as its Southern Caucus Chair. He was re-elected to office in March 2012 as the Area Representative for the Stann Creek West constituency in the Stann Creek District.

2015 Belizean general election

General elections were held in Belize on 4 November 2015 to elect members of the House of Representatives. On 28 September 2015 Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that he had advised the Governor-General to dissolve the National Assembly and to fix Wednesday 4 November 2015 as the date for the next general elections.

Toledo East is an electoral constituency in the Toledo District represented in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belize since 2012 by Michael Espat of the People's United Party. Espat also served several non-consecutive terms in the constituency dating back to 1989.

2020 Belizean general election

General elections were held in Belize on 11 November 2020 to elect the 31 members of the House of Representatives. Nomination day was 21 October.

Julius Espat is a Belizean Politician who was born in Belize City. He was first elected as Cayo South area representative on March 7, 2012. and was reelected in November 2015. He is currently the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and represents Cayo South area as the Honorable Julius Espat in the Belize House of Representatives.
