Jovanka Beckles (born 1963) is an American politician serving as a member of the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit Board for Ward 1. She previously served as a member of the Richmond City Council.
Beckles was born in Panama City,Panama and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1972. She attended Florida A&M University on a full basketball scholarship,and graduated cum laude in 1988 with a BA degree in Psychology. She later earned an MBA degree from the University of Phoenix. She moved to the Bay Area in 1989 and worked as a counselor,youth educator,housing case manager for the homeless,and mental health specialist. [1]
In 2008 she first ran for the Richmond City Council as part of the Richmond Progressive Alliance and lost. She ran again in 2010 and won,and in 2014 she was reelected despite Chevron spending $3 million on opposing candidates, [2] and became vice mayor. She was Richmond's first openly lesbian councilwoman. [3]
During her time on the City Council,Beckles worked on implementing rent control in Richmond. [4] She voted against or abstained on several proposals to build housing in Richmond. [5]
In 2018,she ran for California State Assembly in the 15th District to replace Tony Thurmond,who chose to run for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction. [6] She was endorsed by fellow Richmond City Councilmember (and former mayor) Gayle McLaughlin,former Black Panther Ericka Huggins,Senator Bernie Sanders,the Sierra Club,SEIU 1021,Our Revolution,and the Democratic Socialists of America. She took second place in the June 12 primary,but lost to Buffy Wicks in the general election. [7]
During the campaign,Beckles said she wanted to retain local control over housing,"I really think that cities need to be able to have more control in terms of building,because they know best." [8] On housing,she argued that cities like San Francisco,Oakland and Berkeley are "building lots of new housing" but that the problem is that the housing is not affordable. She added,"I don't think that we have a housing crisis. I think that we have an affordable housing crisis." [8] She called for a repeal of the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act,which would enable cities in California to expand rent control. [8]
On July 18,2020,Beckles announced she would run for AC Transit Board in Ward 1 against 20-year incumbent Joe Wallace. [9] Her platform included keeping transit fare-free and strengthening labor rights for transit workers. [10] She won the general election with 50% of the vote,defeating Wallace and a third candidate,Ben Fong. She was sworn in on December 4,2020. [11]
In 2023,Beckles announced she would run for California State Senate in the 7th District to replace Nancy Skinner,who is term-limited. [12]
Beckles is openly lesbian. She married Nicole Valentino in 2013. [13]

Gayle McLaughlin is an American politician from Richmond,California. She was first elected to the Richmond City Council in 2004 when she was a member of the Green Party of California. She won two consecutive four-year terms as the city's mayor in 2006 and 2010. After reaching the mayoral term limit,she was reelected to the City Council in 2014. In June 2017,she announced her candidacy for lieutenant governor of California in the 2018 election.
The Richmond City Council is the governing body for the city of Richmond,California. The council consists of the Mayor of Richmond and six other city council members,one designated Vice Mayor. The council members are all elected from the whole city;no members are elected by district or ward. The council members are elected to four-year terms,as opposed to the previous six-year terms. They are not all elected at once. The council members meet every first and third Tuesday of the month and,if necessary,hold special meetings on the remaining Tuesdays. Presently the entire city council is Democratic.

The Richmond,California 2014 city election decided the mayor,three council members,and one measure submitted to the voters of Richmond,California on November 4,2014. The election attracted national attention due to the amount of money spent by Chevron both for and against various candidates. Chevron created two political action committees and contributed $2,933,363.90 to them amounting to a total of about $30 per city resident. The only other source of money for them was $5000 each from the Richmond Police Officers Association and the local Firefighter's union. As of October 10,they spent $1.4 Million supporting Nat Bates for mayor and Donna Powers,Charles Ramsey and Al Martinez for the city council. They spent a further $500,000 on negative campaigning against council candidates Gayle McLaughlin,Jovanka Beckles and Eduardo Martinez. The other major candidate for mayor,Tom Butt,had a campaign budget of just over $22,000.

The 2023 Los Angeles special election was held on April 4,2023 with a runoff occurring on June 27,2023. Voters will elect a candidate in a nonpartisan primary,with runoff elections potentially scheduled. One of the fifteen seats on the Los Angeles City Council was up for election due to the vacancy of one member,councilwoman Nury Martinez of District 6,who resigned in the wake of the 2022 Los Angeles City Council scandal. Sharon Tso was installed as a caretaker to the district,but no formal appointment was made. There was potential for a recall over Kevin de León's statements made during the 2022 Los Angeles City Council scandal as well,though due to the lack of signatures turned in by the deadline on April 1,2023,the petition to recall de León failed. Former City Attorney Mike Feuer also proposed that a special election be held on a referendum to replace the Council's ability to redraw the City Council districts with an independent commission before the 2024 elections.
